In Uganda, desperate families were once served by the \u200cgrace of a Virginia missionary who opened a \u200bhome \u200cto save severely malnourished children. Today, the Ugandan \u200bmission no longer exists after a campaign from woke activists shut down the clinic,\u2062 in large \u200cpart because the American running it was white. <\/p>\n

Renee Bach became the subject of a three-part HBO docuseries out in September chronicling the controversy that\u200d surrounded the nonprofit\u2063 she started in 2009 at the age of\u2063 19 called \u201cServing His Children\u201d (SHC). Bach explains\u2064 in the documentary how her Christian faith inspired her to \u200bmove to Uganda to run the mission center.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had never wanted to be like a \u2018missionary,’\u201d she said. But\u200d a sermon at the end of high school from someone named Clayton King compelled her to travel across the Atlantic on a mission trip to Uganda. The documentary aired audio from that sermon. <\/p>\n

\u201cIf tonight \u200cyou\u2019re tired of playing it safe and you\u2019re tired of being predictable and you wanna say, \u2018God,\u2062 I\u2019m gonna go wherever you send me.\u2019\u200d \u2026 We are \u2063aware that there is a world in need,\u201d King said. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2063 honestly don\u2019t \u2062know what came over me because it was just like,\u200d so overwhelming,\u201d said Bach, who went on to join a volunteer program in 2007 that included other teen girls. Two years later, Bach was opening her own nonprofit to serve \u2063Ugandan children in need. <\/p>\n

But according to \u200dthe documentary, what started simply as a feeding program<\/a> quickly morphed into Bach providing\u200b complex medical \u200ccare as impoverished families showed up with dying children. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think my mind just started \u200bkind of spinning a little bit,\u201d she said, \u201crealizing OK, maybe malnutrition, rehabilitation.\u200c This is something that we could really dig into as an\u2062 organization that would meet a need that isn\u2019t already being fully met in this area.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bach \u2062went on to turn Serving His Children into a full-time malnutrition rehab center. But years later, Bach\u2019s mission became the target of online activists outraged by white philanthropy.<\/p>\n

\u2018No White Saviors\u2019 <\/h2>\n
\u201cNo White \u200dSaviors\u201d is a far-left group that \u2064specializes in tarring white\u200b missionaries to Africa as irredeemably racist. The group is shown in the\u200d docuseries as developing its audience and donor network\u2062 after it \u200dbegan to exploit internal\u200b strife at\u2064 Bach\u2019s Ugandan clinic. <\/p>\n
Jackie Kramlich, a\u2063 volunteer \u2063nurse, left Serving His Children over concerns related to Bach\u2019s medical competency. Kramlich began to organize against Bach with blog posts outlining frustrations with clinic leadership \u2062that\u2064 included allegations of medical malpractice.\u2064 By the summer of 2018, Bach was the subject of online posts<\/a> from No White Saviors claiming she was guilty of \u201cmanslaughter with a side of white privilege\u201d and \u201cneocolonialism.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAt first, with No White Saviors,\u201d Bach said, \u201cI kind \u2064of like, laughed it off, like, \u2018Oh yeah, she\u2019ll be on to somebody else tomorrow, so whatever.’\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBut I pretty quickly became their poster child,\u201d Bach added. As the docuseries shows, soon the online harassment campaign provoked\u200b death \u200bthreats\u200b that forced Bach to flee the country. The far-left group continued to rake in clicks and donor dollars that ultimately led\u200c activists to\u2062 orchestrate a lawsuit against the Christian missionary. <\/p>\n
No White Saviors recruited Primah Kwagala, a Ugandan attorney, to find parents of children served by Bach\u2019s clinic who ultimately died. The activist group wanted \u2062to sue the mission \u200bas responsible for kids\u2019 deaths \u2014 in an impoverished region where severe childhood sickness is common. Kwagala found \u2064two mothers willing to blame Bach for their children\u2019s deaths in a Ugandan court. <\/p>\n
Bach\u2019s mother, who was \u200bthe\u2062 director of\u200d the Serving His\u2063 Children board, said she was shocked to \u2064find that the\u200d human rights statutes cited \u201cwere really written\u2063 for war \u2063crimes\u201d and \u201cnot mothers who took their child to a clinic.\u201d According to the docuseries, when the clinic suffered a brief closure over \u2063a licensing issue, during which time several \u200bchildren died, Bach\u2019s mother pulled together the clinic\u2019s \u200bdata \u200band reported that of the 940 children treated by Serving His Children over a\u2062 six-year period, 105 total\u200b children did not survive their\u2063 severe acute malnutrition \u2014 a \u2064mortality rate of 11 percent. Meanwhile, a \u2062study of patients with the same condition at Uganda\u2019s\u2063 largest \u2062children\u2019s hospital revealed the hospital\u2019s mortality\u200d rate was 14 percent. Opponents of the Christian mission, however, were more \u2064fixated on Bach\u2019s\u2062 skin color than her \u200befforts to save starving kids.<\/p>\n
