Instead, \u200dthe justices focused on the 1984 legal doctrine known as the Chevron deference,\u2063 which requires courts to defer to \u200cagencies\u2019 interpretation of laws passed\u2063 by Congress if the interpretation\u2064 is\u2063 \u201creasonable.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Gorsuch Stands Out as Backer of Fishermen<\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Gorsuch, one of six Republican-appointed justices, stood out as the most ardent backer\u200d of\u200b the fishermen seeking to uproot Chevron, which the plaintiffs blame for their defeat at the\u2063 appeals court \u2062level in their bid to avoid paying the at-sea monitors nearly $700 for each fishing\u200c venture.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe cases I saw routinely on \u2064the \u2063courts of appeals \u2014 and I think this is what niggles at so many of\u2062 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/government-unions-have-been-stealing-money-for-years-now-scotus-has-the-chance-to-intervene\/\" title=\"Government Unions Have Been Stealing Money For Years \u2014 Now, SCOTUS Has The Chance To Intervene\">lower court judges<\/a> \u2014 are the immigrant, the veteran\u200c seeking his benefits, the social \u200csecurity disability applicant, who have \u2062no power to influence agencies, who will never capture them, and whose interests\u2063 are not the sorts of things on which people vote, generally speaking,\u201d Gorsuch told Justice Department Solicitor\u2063 General Elizabeth Prelogar, who was\u200c defending Chevron on behalf of the government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd there Chevron is almost always, and in fact I didn\u2019t see a case cited, and perhaps I missed one, \u2064where Chevron wound up benefiting those kinds of peoples,\u201d\u2062 Gorsuch said, adding that\u200b \u201cit seems\u200c to me that it\u2019s arguable \u2014 and certainly the other side makes this argument powerfully \u2014 that Chevron has this disparate impact on \u2063different classes of persons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gorsuch, one of three appointees\u200d of former President Donald Trump, has championed the same \u2062calls by conservative judicial\u200b advocates for the reverse of the doctrine in question, which gives federal agencies broad\u200d authority to impose regulations.<\/p>\n<h3>Conservative Groups and \u200bGorsuch<\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Business groups and conservative court watchers, \u200dincluding a network founded by Charles Koch that has funded the challenge\u200c by the fishermen, say Chevron has led to unchecked bureaucracy. Prelogar on Wednesday countered those beliefs by arguing that environmental efforts, public health, and other matters thrive off of agency expertise and uniform rules.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Gorsuch\u2064 in 2022 notably issued a \u2064dissenting statement when his colleagues declined to hear an earlier challenge to Chevron, arguing that \u201cit \u200cis time to give the profoundly wrong Chevron doctrine \u2018a tombstone no one can miss.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carrie Severino, president of the conservative legal advocacy group JCN, \u2063summarized Gorsuch\u2019s remarks as: \u201cHow come Chevron never benefits the little guy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gorsuch, appointed \u2063to the high court in\u200d 2017, is also the son of a former chief of the Environmental Protection Agency, Anne Gorsuch.
