He used himself as raw material \u2014 whether \u200bas a \u200ccolonial policeman in Burma, or in a coal \u2064mine in Wigan Pier, or living among the homeless, or manning a Loyalist trench in the\u200b Spanish Civil War \u2014 and \u2063was honest in his reactions to and conclusions drawn\u2062 from his surroundings.<\/p>\n<p>These reactions weren\u2019t always \u2064palatable. He\u2063 stated he personally\u200b liked \u2064Hitler, and \u200dthat he often fantasized about driving a bayonet into a \u200b\u201ccoolie.\u201d He was markedly homophobic, calling upper-class socialists \u201cpansies\u201d and\u200d \u201cbun boys.\u201d He blasted pacifists during\u200d the \u200cSecond World War as closet fascists, (\u201cfascifists\u201d), even though, right up until war broke \u2063out, he intended to go underground and sabotage the British\u200d war effort.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1184418470\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-12c3fc1bfd2ff3be49948f88ca02e49d fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-12c3fc1bfd2ff3be49948f88ca02e49d\"><\/div>\n<p>But\u2064 it has been his\u2062 biographers who have done \u200cthe heavy lifting on \u200dexposing his\u200b flaws, often\u200d to challenge the authenticity of his libertarian socialism.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the subtitle of \u2064D.J. \u2064Taylor\u2019s latest\u2064 biography, <em>Orwell: The New Life<\/em>, Taylor offers nothing new. He recycles the same criticisms he made of Orwell in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Orwell-Life-D-J-Taylor-ebook\/dp\/B00Z8POMK6\/\">previous biography<\/a> published in \u20622003. Like the Western Stalinists in Orwell\u2019s lifetime (Orwell stated it was\u2062 because of their noxious \u200ceffect \u200bon \u201cdemocratic socialism\u201d that he \u200babandoned becoming \u2064a novelist like James Joyce and instead became a political writer), Taylor fixates \u2063on \u200bOrwell\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democrats-newest-political-crush-is-privileged-harvard-grad-who-pointed-gun-at-unarmed-black-man\/\" title=\"Democrats\u2019 Newest Political Crush Is \u2018Privileged\u2019 Harvard Grad Who Pointed Gun at Unarmed Black Man\">middle-class upbringing<\/a>; his\u2062 father \u2062was an \u2064official in the colonial opium trade, \u200cand Taylor argues Orwell never shed his \u2063class prejudices toward the proletariat. But \u200bTaylor exhibits\u200b the same sloppy reading of Orwell\u2019s quote that the \u201cworking classes \u200bsmell\u201d without including the entire passage. To do so \u2062would show that Orwell \u200dwas discussing a \u2064common middle-class belief and not\u2063 one of his own.<\/p>\n<p>Orwell\u2019s publisher, Victor \u2063Gollancz, a fervent Stalinist, nevertheless defended Orwell on this point, \u2063and Orwell himself would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2004\/feb\/21\/georgeorwell.featuresreviews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">later say<\/a>, \u201cI not only did not say that the working classes \u2018smell\u2019, I said almost the opposite of this. What I said, as anyone who chooses to consult the books can see, is that 20 or 30 years \u200dago, when I was\u2062 a child, middle-class children were taught to believe that \u200bthe working \u200dclass \u2018smell\u2019 and that \u200cthis was a psychological fact\u2062 which had to be taken into consideration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In actuality, Orwell had a conflicted view of the working class. He called them \u201cblind\u201d and \u201cstupid,\u201d more focused on \u201cfootball pools\u201d than the plight of their counterparts under Hitler. And\u2062 yet \u2064he wrote \u200bmovingly of a working-class woman,\u200b seeing her as a fellow human being rather than as propaganda fodder or a mindless animal:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p><em>At the back \u2064of one of the houses a \u200dyoung \u200cwoman\u2062 was kneeling on the stones, poking a stick up the leaden waste-pipe which ran from the \u200csink inside \u200dand \u2063which I suppose was blocked. \u2026 She had a \u200cround pale\u2064 face, the\u200b usual exhausted face of the slum girl\u200d who \u200cis twenty-five and looks forty, thanks to miscarriages and drudgery; and it wore, for the second in which I saw \u2064it, the most desolate, hopeless expression I have ever-seen. It struck me then that we are mistaken when we say that \u2018It isn\u2019t the same for them as\u200b it \u2064would be for us,\u2019 and that people \u200dbred in the slums can imagine nothing but the slums. For what I saw in her face was not the ignorant suffering of an\u200c animal. She knew well enough\u200b what\u200b was happening to her \u2014 understood as well as \u2063I did how dreadful\u200d a destiny it was to be kneeling there in \u2062the bitter cold,\u200c on the\u2062 slimy stones of a slum backyard, poking a stick \u200bup a foul\u2064 drain-pipe.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Like \u200chis class prejudices, Taylor asserts that Orwell\u2019s time as \u200ca colonial policeman in Burma\u200b gave him a lifelong \u200dlove of cruelty. He quotes with\u200c a bit\u2064 too much relish Orwell \u200ddenouncing the \u200bBurmese as \u201cevil-spirited little beasts.\u201d But if there was anything that lasted a lifetime for Orwell\u200d regarding\u200b his participation in British imperialism, \u200bit was guilt. Orwell was hard on himself for his \u2064participation and gave up a\u2064 relatively lucrative job as a cop to live \u200camong the homeless to understand them.<\/p>\n<p>Taylor, in essence, wants to freeze Orwell\u2019s \u2062mental and political\u200b development in \u200btime, \u200cas a middle-class snob with homicidal \u200btendencies \u200band not a complicated, often conflicted human capable of finer moments.<\/p>\n<p>For Orwell practiced what he \u200dpreached.\u2062 While \u2064pampered British communists were denouncing his writings as fascist, \u200dhe was \u200ctaking\u200d a bullet through the throat from a fascist sniper during the Spanish \u200bCivil War \u2064\u2014 a war he initially intended to cover as a journalist but was so moved by the \u201cworking class \u200cbeing in the saddle\u201d that he\u2064 enlisted on the Loyalist, anti-fascist \u2062side.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2064 becomes apparent\u2063 in Taylor\u2019s castigating\u2062 of Orwell\u2063 as \u201cparanoid\u201d (forgetting he had good\u200b reason to be as the \u2064Stalinists \u200dhad him marked for execution in Spain) and as less than tender in his relations with women (Taylor\u2019s strongest\u200c point) is the biographer\u2019s goal of destroying Orwell\u2019s image as an \u201chonest\u201d writer in \u2063a dishonest period where \u2062his colleagues spread lies \u200cfor Stalin.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-30176ef55198b329f9970f67941324bb fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-30176ef55198b329f9970f67941324bb\"><\/div>\n<p>Like most writers, Orwell probably exaggerated aspects of his life; a case in point was his depiction of himself as penniless in Paris when, in fact, he had an aunt with \u200ca \u2062steady income\u200b within reach. One doesn\u2019t adopt a pen name without eventually building a persona around it, \u200cand Eric Blair, guilt-ridden public school\u200d boy \u200dand colonial policeman, did the same when he \u201cbecame\u201d George Orwell, tough-minded individualist and free-thinking \u2063socialist.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that much of Orwell\u2019s prejudices and\u2062 unattractive moments were recorded by him is \u200ba \u2064testament to his \u200chonesty.\u2062 He was as hard\u2063 on himself as he was with the\u2063 Stalinists, never\u200b descended into self-pity, and \u200boften considered the possibility \u2062that he could be\u2064 wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Orwell\u2019s contradictions\u200c were even political. That is why it is hard to classify him as strictly left.\u2064 He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/many-on-the-left-used-to-strongly-support-the-right-to-defend-oneself-with-a-gun\/\" title=\"Many On The Left Used To Strongly Support The Right To Defend Oneself With A Gun\">opposed gun control<\/a>, abortion, and \u200ctaxes,\u2062 and noted \u2062that\u200b socialism was inherently totalitarian. Yet he hated religion and the free market.<\/p>\n<p>But such conflicts and contradictions make him relatable, \u200band to focus on him at his worst misses the whole \u2062of the man. Taylor only shows the warts to take him \u200ddown \u2063a\u200c peg, and\u2064 readers looking for nuance will \u2063not find it in this biography.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-684f91a8cb0c3ccbd7bac67fd7b76311 fdrlst__b89e9-after-post-content\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-684f91a8cb0c3ccbd7bac67fd7b76311\"><\/div>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<\/div>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> How does Orwell&#8217;s portrayal of the working class in his\u2063 writing showcase both his critical \u200cviews\u200c and \u200chis nuanced perspective<\/h2>\n<p><span>  P>Orwell\u2019s honesty and complexity \u200das a\u200d writer can be seen in his own\u200c words and actions. He\u200b did not\u2062 shy away from revealing the disgraceful aspects of \u200dhis own life and thoughts. Despite his reserved and private nature, Orwell\u200d utilized his\u200c own experiences as material for his\u2064 writing, whether it was his time as a colonial policeman in Burma, his work in a coal mine in\u200b Wigan Pier, his interactions with the homeless, or his involvement \u2063in the Spanish Civil War. Through these experiences, \u200bhe remained true to\u200c his reactions\u200b and drew honest \u2063conclusions about the world around him.<\/p>\n<p>However,\u2063 it is important to acknowledge\u2062 that Orwell\u2019s honest reactions were not always agreeable or palatable to everyone. Taylor, offers no new insights and merely\u2062 repeats the criticisms made\u2062 in a previous biography published in 2003. He referred to them \u200cas &#8220;blind&#8221;\u2063 and\u200d &#8220;stupid,&#8221; \u200doften more concerned with trivial matters \u200dthan the serious challenges \u2062facing them. However, he also depicted a\u200d working-class woman in a deeply empathetic manner, recognizing her suffering and acknowledging her as a fellow human being. This \u2062example illustrates Orwell\u2019s ability to see beyond stereotypes\u2063 and engage with the complexity of\u2064 individuals.<\/p>\n<p>Another aspect of Orwell\u2019s \u200dlife that has been misinterpreted is\u200b his time as a colonial policeman in Burma.
