He also believed that Republicans were ready to move on to a more stable and traditional candidate (spoiler alert: they&#8217;re not).<\/p>\n<p>However, the uncomfortable truth is that DeSantis&#8217;s actions probably wouldn&#8217;t have made \u2063much of a\u2063 difference.\u200b After all, Trump is effectively running as an incumbent, and incumbents have a lot of advantages. \u200dThey \u200dhave built-in party support, a track record of winning, and the power of name recognition. Trump is \u200calways at \u2064the \u200dcenter of the political universe, no matter what he does.<\/p>\n<p>Trump knew this \u2064and strategically positioned himself for the general election. He refused\u200b to\u200d debate fellow Republicans, allowing them to attack each other while he watched from the sidelines. Let&#8217;s face it, nothing Trump says can \u200bshock anyone anymore. His support is based on loyalty to the man himself, not necessarily his policies or mission.<\/p>\n<p>However, I\u2062 believe DeSantis could have benefited from attacking Trump&#8217;s chaotic leadership and mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic earlier and more aggressively. If\u200d you&#8217;re going\u200c to run, go all \u200din. Trump wouldn&#8217;t hesitate to go after his opponents. It&#8217;s \u2062not personal, it&#8217;s just business.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a24e851ac78b816c0e652048d674415c fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a24e851ac78b816c0e652048d674415c\"><\/div>\n<p>But ultimately, none of that would have changed DeSantis&#8217;s fate. When Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg indicted Trump in March, the former president&#8217;s popularity soared. Any criticism of Trump at that point was seen as support for his persecutors. Most\u2062 primary voters have no real issues with DeSantis. Even his critics wouldn&#8217;t have a problem with his personality or conduct if he hadn&#8217;t dared to challenge their hero. Once DeSantis endorses Trump, all will be forgiven. Loyalty and subservience are what \u200dTrump values most.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also important to note that Trump is a one-man movement. Those who \u2062believe that the success of\u2062 MAGA will continue without Trump are fooling\u2063 themselves. In reality, candidates who try to imitate Trump&#8217;s\u200b style often end \u2063up \u2062losing or falling short. Not necessarily.
