Ron \u2062DeSantis and former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley are such viable alternatives.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>A close \u2062second in the \u2064loser \u2063column was the Democrat Party of \u200cIowa, ignominiously forced to sit\u200c out the opening\u200d caucuses for \u200bthe first time in 52 years and watch their GOP counterparts operate\u2062 a functioning caucus \u2014 something state Democrats\u2063 had a \u200bhard time \u200cdoing four years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Trump hammered \u200bhis remaining rivals, winning by a record-smashing <a href=\"https:\/\/results.iacaucus2024.com\/?mc_cid=bc011e5ac4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>51 percent<\/strong><\/a>  of the vote. DeSantis finished a distant second, with roughly 21 percent support of \u200dcaucusgoers. Haley, a former South Carolina governor who served \u200cas Trump\u2019s\u2064 U.N. ambassador, looked \u200cto finish in third with about 19 percent of the vote.<\/p>\n<p>Ohio biotech \u200centrepreneur \u200band political newcomer\u200d Vivek Ramaswamy \u200dreceived \u2062less than 8 percent support, finishing a \u200cfaraway \u2062fourth. He was uncharacteristically magnanimous in his \u200bspeech, congratulating DeSantis and Haley for \u201chaving a good time together\u201d and describing the GOP competitors he\u2019s frequently bashed as \u201cvery\u2062 smart \u200cpeople, very capable people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Trump made it clear he believes playtime is over.\u2062 In\u2064 recent days, Trump and a long\u2063 list of \u2064surrogates have made clear they wanted Iowa to send a message that the former president is the undisputed Republican candidate for \u20642024. A big victory in the Hawkeye caucuses would make a compelling argument \u2064that the time\u2062 to clear the field\u200d is nigh.<\/p>\n<p>And it was a big night in Iowa\u200b for\u200d Trump. \u2062In a \u2064telerally just a few \u2063hours before the caucuses\u2063 began, Trump told supporters to take nothing for granted, not to \u200dworry about the polls that have shown the front-runner to be far ahead\u2062 of his opponents. \u201cAssume we\u2019re\u2063 1\u200c point \u2063down,\u201d \u2063he said. At the \u200csame time, \u200cTrump\u2063 asked his backers to\u2064 deliver 50 percent support, a threshold no GOP candidate \u200bhas ever hit in\u2062 Iowa\u2019s Republican caucuses.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump army came through, \u2064braving negative temperatures and painful windchills to\u2062 exceed expectations.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, \u200dthe \u2062final <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-election\/final-iowa-poll-trump-maintains-dominant-lead-caucuses-rcna132669\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NBC New\/Des Moines Register\/Mediacom Iowa poll<\/a> released\u200b a day before the caucuses \u200ctracked pretty closely with Trump\u2019s victory. The former president garnered\u2063 48 percent support from respondents in that \u2063survey. Haley\u200d was a distant second,\u200c at 20 percent, followed by DeSantis at 16 \u200bpercent. Ramaswamy \u2063trailed in\u2062 fourth, at 8 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The DeSantis campaign had put much of its resources and time\u200d into Iowa, betting on \u2062victory and positioning DeSantis as the Republican candidate \u2063who \u2064could beat Democrat President Joe Biden. \u2062While that narrative has been undercut by the polls and his performance \u2064Monday night, the \u2064popular Florida governor fended off \u200ca\u2062 much-reported Haley surge in recent months to slip into a second-place \u200dfinish.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis, who\u2063 has spent the past couple of weeks \u200btrying to lower expectations in Iowa, sounded like a \u2064wounded warrior as he \u2062claimed triumph against mounting\u2064 challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of your support, in spite of all that they threw at us, everyone against\u200d us \u2014 we\u2019ve\u2064 got our ticket punched \u2063out of Iowa,\u201d he \u200csaid as the final caucus results \u2063were filtering in.<\/p>\n<p>Team \u2064DeSantis complained about \u2064The Associated Press declaring\u200d Trump the victor just\u200c a half hour \u200cinto the \u2064caucuses, with a fraction of the vote tally\u2064 in.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAbsolutely outrageous\u2064 that the media would participate in \u200d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-says-he-received-target-letter-in-federal-j6-probe-from-jack-smith\/\" title=\"Trump claims he got target letter in J6 probe from Jack Smith.\">election \u2064interference<\/a> by calling the race before tens of\u2062 thousands of \u200cIowans even had a chance to vote,\u201d DeSantis campaign spokesman Andrew Romeo howled on his X account.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The DeSantis camp\u2019s complaints may ring hollow \u200cto the\u2062 former\u2063 president, who has faced actual election interference in the left\u2019s\u2062 efforts to remove \u2064him from primary ballots. \u2062He\u2019s also had\u2063 to legally battle a politically weaponized U.S. Department of Justice targeting Trump, Biden\u2019s \u200blikely opponent in this November\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/are-covid-case-surges-more-fake-news\/\" title=\"Are COVID Case Surges More Fake News?\">presidential election<\/a>, with a hefty list of criminal charges.<\/p>\n<p>The DeSantis and Haley campaigns, and the well-heeled political action\u200c committees \u200cbacking\u2062 them, have \u2063dumped a lot \u200cof money into Iowa for \u2064a\u200d disappointing return on investment. \u200dHaley in particular, criticized by conservative grassroots as the \u201cestablishment\u201d candidate, now must lick her wounds \u2064and move on to New Hampshire \u200bwhere \u200dshe\u2019s \u2064polling in second, 14 percentage points \u2064behind Trump but leading\u2064 DeSantis \u200bby more than 20, according\u2062 to\u200d the latest RealClearPolitics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolling.com\/polls\/president\/republican-primary\/2024\/new-hampshire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">average<\/a> of polls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you, Iowa! \u2062You\u2019re faithful, patriotic &#038; hardworking, and I\u2019m grateful to each of you!\u201d the \u2062candidate\u2062 wrote on her X account, \u2063holding on to\u200b her fraying narrative that she\u2019s better positioned to beat Biden than Trump. \u201cNow it\u2019s on to New Hampshire, where this\u200d campaign \u2063is the \u2062last\u200b best hope of stopping the Trump-Biden rematch that no one wants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Iowa\u2063 Democrat Party \u2064looked especially bad.<\/p>\n<p>While the state party claimed it was holding its caucus Monday\u200b night, the meeting was a sad shell of the first-in-the-nation nominating caucus Iowa Democrats \u2063rolled out in\u2064 1972. \u2063They met to \u200cset party \u2062platforms, but they won\u2019t announce the winner of their \u201cpreference vote\u201d until March 5 \u2014 Super Tuesday. That\u2019s because the Democratic\u200d National Committee took away the state party\u2019s kickoff caucus status. Iowa, so sayeth the \u2063DNC, is too white. The \u200dDNC\u2063 demands diversity in \u2063the party\u2019s\u2062 tireless pursuit\u200c of wokeness. So \u2064the \u2062Democratic Party of Iowa, running afoul of\u2064 state law, kissed the DNC\u2019s ring and opted for\u200b a mail-in preference vote between \u2064Jan. 15 and Super Tuesday to decide how Iowa delegates will vote\u200c at this \u200bsummer\u2019s Democratic\u200b National\u2062 Convention.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2063demotion follows the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmoinesregister.com\/in-depth\/news\/elections\/presidential\/caucus\/2022\/12\/11\/iowa-caucus-2020-chaos-biden-sanders-buttigieg-app-failure-dnc\/69703352007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spectacular fiasco <\/a>that was Iowa\u2019s\u200b 2020 \u2064Democratic caucuses. \u201cConsiderable flaws\u201d\u200d in the party\u2019s \u200creporting \u200csystem created confusion, long-delayed results, and charges that the\u2063 process was\u200b rigged.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the last\u200c two Iowa\u2064 Democrat caucuses have come\u2063 under widespread criticism, featuring eyebrow-raising shenanigans against Bernie Sanders in 2016 and 2020.\u2062 But the Democrat \u200cParty machinery has been\u200b much more interested in a coronation than \u200ba contest.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2063Iowa GOP, on \u2062the\u200d other \u2064hand, was being widely \u200bpraised \u200dfor its\u200b cool, crisp handling \u200dof the \u200d2024 installment.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s\u200d now on to New Hampshire,\u200d and radio \u200dsilence for Iowa. Gone\u200b are the wall-to-wall campaign\u2064 ads. The barrage of candidates.
