The aim \u2062of\u200c this event is to encourage public schools to \u2062embrace\u200c the national \u2062demands rooted in the\u200b guiding principles of\u2062 the Black \u2063Lives Matter movement.<\/p>\n<p>The curriculum fair\u2064 is a prelude to the highly anticipated Black Lives Matter \u200dat School Week of Action, which DCAESJ actively helps organize in D.C. Public Schools. This empowering week is scheduled to take place from February 5 to 9.<\/p>\n<h3>Engaging Topics and Inspiring Sessions<\/h3>\n<p>The curriculum fair, set to take place on January 20, will feature a range of thought-provoking topics. Attendees can expect sessions on &#8220;queer\u200d affirming,&#8221; &#8220;trans affirming,&#8221; &#8220;restorative justice,&#8221; &#8220;anti-racist \u2064professional \u200cdevelopment,&#8221; and even &#8220;reproductive justice,&#8221; a term often associated with abortion activism.<\/p>\n<p>One particularly intriguing session, titled &#8220;From Inspiration to Action: Making a Plan for Monday,&#8221; \u200cappears to\u2063 provide teachers and administrators with a blueprint for implementing\u200b critical race theory ideology in their classrooms. This session\u2062 aims to empower educators to collaborate and organize the &#8220;Week \u200cof Action&#8221; at their respective schools. It is recommended for\u200c school officials\u2063 working with\u2062 early \u2063elementary to upper elementary students.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the curriculum fair will feature an enlightening\u200b talk by an\u2063 &#8220;Afrofuturist&#8221; who will explore the concept of reclaiming identity through the examination of spacetime, \u2062power, and bodily identity. The event&#8217;s keynote speaker, Enid Lee, is an esteemed &#8220;anti-racist \u200dprofessional development specialist.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Controversy and Support<\/h3>\n<p>While DCPS has previously\u2063 celebrated the\u2064 Black Lives Matter &#8220;Week of \u200bAction,&#8221; this year&#8217;s event has been marked by controversy. \u200cBlack Lives Matter at School openly expressed support for Hamas following the terrorist attack on Israeli citizens\u200d on October 7. The group attributed the attack to Israeli \u2062settler colonialism, land dispossession, occupation, blockade, apartheid, and attempted genocide\u200d of Palestinians.<\/p>\n<p>Nicole Neily, president \u2064of Parents\u200c Defending Education, finds \u200bthe group&#8217;s support for Hamas appalling. She\u2063 questions the decision to continue the Week of Action in public\u2063 school districts\u200c across America in\u200b light of this support.<\/p>\n<p>Black \u2063Lives\u2063 Matter at School&#8217;s program includes a &#8220;year of purpose&#8221; that encourages\u200d educators to reflect on their own work in relation to antiracist pedagogy and abolitionist practice.
