Google has laid off hundreds of\u2062 employees working on its hardware, engineering, and voice-assistant teams\u2062 due to cost-cutting measures<\/a>.<\/p>\n
The company released\u200d a statement \u200csaying that the cuts are due\u2062 to “responsibly investing\u200c in our company’s biggest priorities and the significant opportunities ahead.”<\/p>\n

“Some teams are continuing to\u200b make these \u200bkinds of \u200corganizational changes, which include \u2062some role eliminations globally,” the \u2063statement read.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
Although the majority \u2062of the effects were \u200cfelt by the company’s augmented reality \u200chardware division, Google had previously announced that it was cutting a few hundred positions across the engineering, hardware, and Assistant teams. <\/p>\n
The \u200blayoffs come after Alphabet, the\u2064 parent company of Google,\u200b and \u200dits executives promised to cut expenses. Google announced\u2062 a year \u2062ago that \u200bit would lay off\u2062 12,000 \u200bworkers, \u2062or roughly 6% of its total workforce.<\/p>\n
Google announced that it \u2062would deprecate 17\u200d “underutilized” features of Google Assistant, such as playing audiobooks, sending emails, and initiating voice-activated meditation \u200dsessions with Calm,\u2062 on the same day that news of \u2063the cutbacks \u200dbroke.<\/p>\n
The\u200d Alphabet\u2064 Workers Union called the job cuts “another round of needless\u200d layoffs” in a post on X.<\/p>\n

“Our members and teammates work hard every day to \u200dbuild great products \u200bfor our users, \u2063and the company cannot continue to fire our coworkers while making billions every\u200b quarter,” the union wrote.\u2064 “We won’t stop fighting until\u2063 our\u2063 jobs are safe!”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
