How did Gypsy go \u2063from being \u200dabused to achieving stardom?<\/h2>\n
Gypsy-Rose\u200c Blanchard: From Abuse to Stardom<\/p>\n
Gypsy-Rose \u2062Blanchard, the woman who orchestrated the gruesome murder\u2062 of her mother \u200din 2015 by manipulating a vulnerable disabled man, was released from \u2064prison in December after serving 8 years \u2062of a 10-year \u200bsentence. Since her mother\u2019s murder, Gypsy has skyrocketed into stardom, becoming \u2063the subject of the hit Hulu miniseries \u201cThe Act,\u201d participating in\u200d various documentaries, landing a \u2062book deal,\u2063 amassing 9.5 million TikTok\u200d followers, and making numerous television\u2062 appearances.<\/p>\n
For\u2063 the\u200d first 23 years of her life, Gypsy was abused \u200cby\u2063 her\u200b mother,\u2062 Clauddine Blanchard, who went by \u2063the nickname Dee Dee. Dee Dee suffered from \u200ca mental disorder known as Munchausen syndrome\u200c by proxy, \u2062in which a caregiver makes a dependent feel and appear ill, even though they are \u200dnot.<\/p>\n
Thanks to Dee Dee, a perfectly healthy Gypsy was heavily medicated, subjected to numerous\u200b unnecessary surgeries, and was forced to\u200d use a feeding \u2062tube and wheelchair. \u2062Dee Dee also claimed Gypsy had everything from lung disease and muscular dystrophy to asthma and\u2064 leukemia. To liberate herself by murdering her\u200d mother, Gypsy enlisted the help of \u2064Nicholas Godejohn, a vulnerable disabled man.<\/p>\n
In 2011, after 19-year-old Gypsy made a failed attempt to escape her mother, Dee Dee reportedly smashed\u200b Gypsy\u2019s phone and laptop and handcuffed Gypsy to her bed for\u200d two weeks. Gypsy was essentially Dee Dee\u2019s prisoner, \u200band she eventually devised a plan to \u2062end her \u200csuffering for good.<\/p>\n
Enter \u2063Nicholas Godejohn, the man who murdered Dee Dee by stabbing her 17 times in the back while she was sleeping and who is currently serving a life sentence in prison.<\/p>\n
In 2012, Gypsy created a secret \u2062online dating profile, where\u2063 she met and began a \u2062remote romantic relationship with Godejohn. Godejohn has autism, an IQ of 82, and, according to psychologist \u200cKent Franks,\u200c who \u200devaluated\u200c Godejohn in 2016, is more\u2063 like a child than an adult.<\/p>\n
Godejohn and Gypsy had plans\u2064 to marry and have children, and Gypsy insisted\u2062 that\u2062 the only way this would be possible was if Godejohn killed Dee Dee. In\u200b 2018, Godejohn told ABC\u2064 News, \u201cI did\u2064 it not only to release Gypsy, but I\u200b also felt \u200cit was the only way to be with her \u2026 I saved someone\u2019s life in the process of what I [did].\u201d The pair planned Dee \u200bDee\u2019s murder for over a year.<\/p>\n
In an interview after the killing, Godejohn\u200d blamed his \u201cevil side\u201d for the gruesome act. He described\u2064 an angel and a\u2064 devil sitting\u2064 on his shoulders when he walked into \u2063the \u2064Blanchard\u2019s home to kill Dee Dee, and the devil won out. Godejohn, a clearly\u200c disturbed individual, also had morbid, violent sexual preferences.<\/p>\n
After \u2063the killing, \u200cthe pair \u2062had sex\u200c in the Blanchard house, which\u200b Gypsy claims was not entirely consensual. Later, when they arrived at a motel\u2064 room, Godejohn described feeling remorse for killing Dee Dee. \u201cI felt horrible about \u200dit,\u201d he said, recalling his emotions in \u2063the motel room. \u201c[Gypsy] kept on telling me, \u2018Stop crying, stop crying. There\u2019s no \u2064reason, reason to cry. It was my idea, it wasn\u2019t yours.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
Indeed, while Godejohn committed\u2063 the murder, Gypsy paid for his bus ticket to her hometown and the knife he used to kill her mother. \u2063In court, Gypsy even admitted that she \u201ctalked Godejohn into\u201d murdering her mother.<\/p>\n
Before the killing, \u2063Godejohn was a highly isolated individual who lived with his parents, even though he was in his mid-20s. \u201cWhat was life like for me before I met \u200cGypsy? I actually was\u2064 basically alone,\u201d he said \u2062in\u2063 a prison interview.<\/p>\n
According to his father, \u200d\u201cIt was hard for\u200b [Godejohn] to make friends,\u201d adding that \u201cHe was always by\u2062 himself, pretty much grew up by himself. He\u200c had friends, not many. One or two but mainly family,\u200d we\u2019re his friends.\u201d<\/p>\n
Godejohn didn\u2019t seem to understand the gravity of \u200bhis actions or \u2064the consequences that would await him. In \u200da prison interview, he described what he envisioned his \u2062life\u200c with Gypsy would be like after the murder. \u201cI was gonna get a job and start looking for an apartment. After a little ways\u200c down the\u2063 road, I\u2019d probably end up marrying \u200bher and end up having children with her,\u201d he said.\u2063 \u201cThat\u2019s something\u200d I\u2019ve never had with \u2064someone else. To this day, she\u2019s the only\u200d one I\u2019ve ever had that with.\u201d<\/p>\n
To Godejohn, Gypsy was the first woman, and perhaps the first human outside his immediate family, who he believed truly loved\u2062 him. In prison, Godejohn described his relationship\u2064 with Gypsy as \u201cthe best days\u201d of his life. \u201cI \u200denjoyed every\u200c second of it,\u201d he\u200c said.\u2063 \u201cFrom the very beginning, I just\u200b knew we were soulmates.\u201d<\/p>\n
Eventually, however, Gypsy\u2064 claimed Godejohn\u2062 was \u201ccontrolling\u201d and broke up with \u2064him. In July 2022, while still in prison,\u200b Gypsy married a different man she \u2062met through \u2063a pen-pal program.<\/p>\n
From what the public can tell, Gypsy has fully moved on from Godejohn. Commenting on one\u200b of her\u2063 new husband\u2019s \u200brecent Instagram posts, Gypsy wrote, \u201cDon\u2019t listen to the haters \u2026 besides they jealous because you are rocking my world every night\u2026yeah\u200c I \u200dsaid it, the D is\u2064 fire.\u201d<\/p>\n
Today, everyone seems to \u2064agree\u2064 Gypsy is a\u200b hero who deserves our attention and admiration. \u201cI think \u200dyou\u2019re\u200c very brave for being here,\u201d Sunny Hostin told Gypsy during \u200can interview \u200bon \u201cThe View\u201d this week.\u2063 \u201cThank you for telling your story. I think it will help a lot of\u2064 people.\u201d Exactly how Gypsy is \u201cbrave\u201d or how her story will \u201chelp a\u2062 lot of people\u201d is unclear.<\/p>\n
When asked on \u201cThe View\u201d how she \u201creconcile[s]\u201d with the fact that Godejohn \u201cwill spend the rest of his life in jail,\u201d Gypsy responded in classic Millennial fashion. \u201cI have \u2063to focus on myself right now,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI can\u2019t look in the past\u2064 and worry about him or anything else going on,\u201d Gypsy continued. \u201cI have to prioritize myself in\u2062 this moment. I just \u200dgot released from prison \u200dafter eight and\u200b a\u2063 half years, and then I didn\u2019t have a\u200d life before that. So I \u2064have \u2064a lot \u200cto process and go through right now.\u201d<\/p>\n
