Communist China framed the election as a choice between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/chinese-official-urges-taiwans-people-make-correct-choice-election-2024-01-03\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cpeace and war.\u201d<\/a> It\u2019s false framing and overt election interference. \u200bFrankly, China will likely invade Taiwan regardless of whoever is elected.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Currently, three candidates are\u200c running for the office \u2062of president. The front-runner is \u200dTaiwan\u2019s Vice President William Lai Ching-te, who is a candidate of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/tsai-ing-wen-0?module=inline&#038;pgtype=article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the \u2064Democratic Progressive Party<\/a> \u200c(DPP).\u2064 Trailing behind Lai are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/politics\/article\/3235054\/taiwan-election-kmts-hou-yu-ih-pledges-strong-military-and-talks-keep-beijing-bay?module=inline&#038;pgtype=article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hou Yu-ih of the Kuomintang<\/a> (KMT) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/politics\/article\/3219631\/could-taiwans-white-knight-ko-wen-je-smash-through-islands-blue-green-split?module=inline&#038;pgtype=article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ko Wen-je from\u2063 the Taiwan\u200d People\u2019s Party<\/a> (TPP).<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1519559578\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-9ad3d21551245bc14c0d03947b94822a fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-9ad3d21551245bc14c0d03947b94822a\"><\/div>\n<p>Hou and Ko are \u2064considered\u2063 Beijing-friendly because\u200d they advocate for engagement and \u2063cooperation with Beijing.\u2062 The TPP, founded in 2019, is\u200d not as influential\u200c as the KMT because the KMT \u2062has a \u200clong history of governing Taiwan, including being the island\u2019s ruling\u2062 party between 1949\u200b and the \u200dearly\u2063 1990s.\u200c Additionally, Hou of the \u200bKMT promised \u200bto adhere \u200dto the \u201cOne China\u201d policy, which was enshrined in the constitution of the Republic of China (an \u200dofficial name \u2062of Taiwan). Although \u200cthe KMT and Beijing have different interpretations of the \u201cOne China\u201d policy (each\u200c side believes it is the only \u200dlegitimate representative of China), Beijing regards the acknowledgment\u200d of\u200d the \u201cOne China\u201d concept as a \u200dprerequisite for any cross-strait engagement. \u2064Therefore, Beijing has made it known that its preferred candidate is Hou.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Beijing Against DPP\u2019s Lai<\/h2>\n<p>Beijing doesn\u2019t hide its resentment \u200btoward Lai of\u2063 the DPP. It brands the \u2064DPP as\u200b a pro-independent\u2063 \u201cseparatist\u201d \u200dparty because the DPP\u2019s charter <a href=\"https:\/\/thediplomat.com\/2019\/12\/beijings-animosity-toward-taiwans-dpp-is-bad-for-everyone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">states<\/a> that it aims\u2062 to \u201cestablish a\u2063 sovereign, independent, and autonomous \u200bRepublic of Taiwan.\u201d Beijing also sees past DPP leaders\u2019 emphasis \u2063on teaching Taiwan\u2019s history and culture \u200bin\u2064 schools as covert moves toward independence. Beijing is especially concerned about the\u200c DPP\u2019s \u2062popularity with Taiwan\u2019s\u2063 younger generation, which\u2062 favors\u200b identifying as Taiwanese and rejecting Beijing\u2019s forced \u2063\u201cunification,\u201d which they see as an\u200b annexation of their\u2064 homeland.<\/p>\n<p>Beijing has tried to terrorize\u200d Taiwanese voters for voting\u200b for the DPP \u2064in \u200cthe past. For example, in 2016, the People\u2019s Liberation \u2062Army fired missiles into water\u200b near \u2062Taiwan \u200dafter current President Tsai Ing-wen of\u200d the DPP \u200bwon her first presidential election. During his campaign,\u2063 Lai <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/politics\/article\/3246966\/who-running-taiwans-presidential-election-and-what-does-it-mean-mainland-china?module=flexi_unit-focus&#038;pgtype=homepage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reportedly<\/a> clarified that he would not seek Taiwan\u2019s independence if elected. President Tsai, also the\u200c head of the DPP, made a similar pledge during her campaign and has \u200dtaken a \u201cmoderate and responsible\u201d\u2062 stance to maintain the status quo once in office. Lai\u2019s supporters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taiwannews.com.tw\/en\/news\/5070804\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pointed<\/a> \u200dto President Tsai\u2019s record as evidence that\u2063 the DPP is not a \u201cseparatist\u201d party and Lai is not a \u201ctroublemaker.\u201d Still, Beijing has conducted overt and covert election interference\u200b to ensure Lai will\u2064 not be elected.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CCP Favors\u200d KMT\u2019s Hou<\/h2>\n<p>Overtly, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has taken both political and military moves \u2064to convey whom Taiwanese should vote for. Zhang Zhijun, head of China\u2019s Association for Relations Across\u200d the Taiwan Strait, admonished the Taiwanese to\u200d \u201cvote correctly\u201d in his New Year\u2019s address, implying that \u200da victory for the\u2062 KMT means peace\u2064 and\u200b economic prosperity. In contrast, a victory for the DPP means war and\u200c economic decline.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-12f92b40b29cf6a5edc15f0198450d70 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-12f92b40b29cf6a5edc15f0198450d70\"><\/div>\n<p>A German think tank <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taiwannews.com.tw\/en\/news\/5071874\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">criticized<\/a> such \u2064a framing as \u201can\u2063 oversimplification and, at worst,\u200d a complete distortion.\u201d \u2063Remember that\u2062 the CCP and the KMT fought a bitter Civil War\u2064 between 1945 and 1949, which resulted in the political divide between Taiwan and the mainland.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, China\u2019s military \u2062has stepped up its intimidation of Taiwan, including \u2062sending Chinese\u2064 fighter jets into Taiwan\u2019s air \u2062defense zone daily and conducting frequent military exercises near the Taiwan Strait. Taiwan\u2019s Ministry of \u200cDefense also \u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taiwannews.com.tw\/en\/news\/5071593\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reports<\/a> the sighting of China\u2019s spy balloons (similar to the ones floated in U.S. airspace\u200b last year) flying over the\u200d island.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Beijing\u200b Meddling in Taiwan\u2019s Politics<\/h2>\n<p>Taiwanese authorities are well aware\u2062 that Beijing has a long history of\u200c meddling with Taiwan\u2019s \u200cpolitics covertly as well. In late 2019, Wang \u201cWilliam\u201d Liqiang, a self-identified \u2064Chinese\u2062 spy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-australia-50528831\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claimed<\/a> he\u200c was personally\u2063 involved\u2064 in\u200c meddling with \u200cTaiwan\u2019s 2018 election \u200cby \u201ccreating\u200b more than 20 media and internet companies to launch \u2018targeted attacks,\u2019 \u2063and spending roughly \u200b$200 million \u200bover an unspecified period \u2062to \u200cinvest in television stations in\u2062 Taiwan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wang also alleged\u200d that he funneled $2.8 million on behalf of Beijing to help Han Kuo-yu of the KMT in 2018\u2019s \u2064Kaohsiung mayoral election because Beijing wanted to use Han to\u2062 break \u2063the DPP\u2019s stronghold in southern \u200dTaiwan, where Kaohsiung is located. Han denied \u2064ever receiving any campaign \u200bcontributions from Beijing.\u2062 Still, he\u200b acknowledged that\u2063 it \u2063was no secret Beijing \u201chad been trying to influence \u2064Taiwan\u2019s elections for years.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-3e5d7c4025eb3de08d96e9ab51aa0940 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-3e5d7c4025eb3de08d96e9ab51aa0940\"><\/div>\n<p>Many suspected Beijing\u2019s election \u200dinterference\u200b was responsible \u200cfor the\u2063 DPP\u2019s landslide loss in local \u2063elections in\u2062 2018. \u2063Taiwan\u2019s \u200clegislature passed the Anti-Infiltration Act in\u200d December\u2062 2019, hoping \u2062to fend off Beijing\u2019s covert political interference.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the CCP\u2019s\u200b election \u200bmeddling, especially its warning that voting for Lai of the DPP is voting for war, seems to have \u2062worked, as Lai\u2019s lead over Hou has \u2064shrunk recently. According\u200c to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/tawain-election-2024-taipei-south-china-sea-tensions-william-lai-hou-xi-jinping-nail-biter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Politico<\/a>,\u2062 \u201cBeijing-leaning United Daily News put both candidates on 31 percent.\u201d \u200cBut any\u200b voters who believe voting for the KMT candidate will ensure Taiwan\u2019s peace and prosperity \u2064is delusional.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Beijing Sees \u2062Democratic Taiwan as a Threat<\/h2>\n<p>Regardless of\u2062 which candidate of what party is elected to govern Taiwan, Beijing \u200dsees a democratic Taiwan \u200cas a\u200c threat \u200cto the CCP\u2019s legitimacy. It must thus be eliminated because a free and prosperous Taiwan discredits Beijing\u2019s claims that Chinese culture \u2063and democracy are inherently incompatible and that the Chinese people \u200dcan have peace and prosperity only under\u2064 the CCP\u2019s totalitarian rule.<\/p>\n<p>Beijing initially envisioned a \u2064so-called \u201cpeaceful\u201d\u2064 reunification; that\u2063 is, Taiwan would surrender under the weight of China\u2019s constant economic and political pressure and relentless military intimidation without the PLA firing any shots. \u200cBut \u200dBeijing\u2019s \u200bhope has faded away \u200das surveys have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/taiwan-china-politics-identity-independence-unification-public-opinion-polling-1724546\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shown<\/a> that the majority of\u2064 Taiwanese have no desire to \u201cunite\u201d with mainland China,\u200d especially after Beijing\u2019s ruthless crackdown on Hong Kong\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/pro-hong-kong-messages-destroyed-vandalized-at-cornell-university\/\" title=\"Pro-Hong Kong Messages Destroyed, Vandalized At Cornell University\">pro-democracy movement<\/a> since \u200d2020. About two-thirds of the Taiwanese prefer to maintain the \u200bstatus quo of Taiwan\u2019s political separation from the mainland. This \u200dis\u200c a political reality that \u2062no party will be able to\u200c reverse.<\/p>\n<p>Xi Jinping, head of \u200dthe CCP, probably realized that \u2062force may be his only\u2063 option to solve the \u201cTaiwan problem,\u201d which was \u200bone of the main\u2063 reasons \u200che invested so \u2064much in the modernization of China\u2019s Navy. Xi sees\u2064 it \u2062as his legacy to achieve the \u201cgreat rejuvenation of the\u2064 Chinese nation\u201d by 2050, including annexing Taiwan. Some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taiwannews.com.tw\/en\/news\/5069317\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suspect<\/a> Xi may launch the invasion as early as this year to take advantage \u200cof the overstretched U.S. military and U.S. foreign policy setbacks\u200d under the \u2063Biden administration.<\/p>\n<p>Xi has been increasingly vocal about his\u200d resolve\u200c to conquer Taiwan. NBC reported\u200c that Xi\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/china\/xi-warned-biden-summit-beijing-will-reunify-taiwan-china-rcna130087\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">warned<\/a> U.S. President Joe \u200dBiden at the San Francisco\u2064 summit last fall \u2063that\u200d China would \u201creunite\u201d\u200b with Taiwan no matter what. \u200dAt\u200c a symposium to mark\u200b the 130th anniversary of CCP founder Mao Zedong\u2019s birth on Dec. 26, Xi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taiwannews.com.tw\/en\/news\/5066830\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stated<\/a> that \u201crealizing \u2064China\u2019s complete reunification\u200c is\u2064 an inevitable trend.\u201d Xi also declared that \u200bthe\u2064 CCP must resolve\u2063 \u201cthe Taiwan question in the new \u2063era.\u201d\u2064 Xi\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-china-67855477\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent\u200d annual New Year address<\/a> \u200d \u201creiterated\u200d his claim that Taiwan\u2063 would \u2018surely be reunified\u2019 with China,\u201d the\u2063 BBC reported.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, Taiwan\u2019s upcoming election is not about a choice\u200b between \u200bwar and peace. Regardless of \u2063the \u200boutcome, Xi will invade Taiwan sooner or later. A DPP victory probably will offer Xi a pretext to launch the invasion sooner.
