Bay Area activists are adamant that failing to pass this resolution would be both racist and supportive\u200d of\u2064 genocide.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/sfgov.legistar.com\/View.ashx?M=F&#038;ID=12512991&#038;GUID=5DF578C3-B185-42CC-876E-317A0054FCBD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resolution<\/a>, which acknowledges the\u200c &#8220;brutal attack&#8221; by Hamas militants, highlights the ongoing &#8220;armed violence&#8221; since October 7th. It urges a sustained ceasefire in Gaza, the provision of \u200bhumanitarian aid, the release of hostages, and the \u200ccondemnation of \u200cantisemitic, anti-Palestinian,\u200b and Islamophobic \u2064rhetoric and attacks. \u200cThe resolution also cites the\u200d growing number of labor unions and other blue cities that have called for a ceasefire as justification.<\/p>\n<p>This proposal from San Francisco \u2062is the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/california\/orange-county-city-to-vote-on-resolution-that-accuses-israel-of-ethnic-cleansing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high-profile \u2063attempt<\/a> by a blue California city \u2063to involve itself in the conflict. \u200cIt comes after anti-Israel protesters disrupted the state Democratic convention, Sacramento&#8217;s annual Christmas-tree lighting, and the state assembly. Despite \u200cfacing an <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2023\/12\/13\/san-francisco-budget-cuts-800-million-deficit-taxes-spending\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$800 million deficit<\/a> and grappling with issues such as crime, homelessness, and economic crises, San Francisco \u200clawmakers spent nearly\u200b six hours on Monday deliberating the resolution.<\/p>\n<p>During the vetting committee, Supervisor Matt Dorsey proposed an amendment to\u2062 acknowledge that \u200dHamas is a U.S.-designated terrorist \u200borganization and to condemn\u200c their sexual violence against women. However, he faced opposition from activists in the legislative chamber, who jeered and shouted in disagreement. Dorsey described Hamas&#8217;s \u2062October 7th attack on Israel as &#8220;systematic and unprecedented in its cruelty,&#8221; highlighting a &#8220;pattern of rape, mutilation, and extreme brutality against women.&#8221;\u2062 Progressive supervisor Dean Preston, coauthor of the\u200b resolution, sided with the activists, arguing that describing Hamas in this manner would make the \u200cresolution biased.\u200b He suggested that\u200c Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu&#8217;s retaliatory strikes should \u2064also be called out. Ultimately, the committee \u200bdecided to proceed with the resolution, with Dorsey being the only \u2064lawmaker to vote against it.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, anti-Israel activists lined up\u2062 to\u200d express their support for the resolution and\u200d criticize Dorsey&#8217;s amendment during a lengthy public comment period.<\/p>\n<p>Rupa \u2064Marya,\u2064 a UCSF physician and appointee\u2063 by Gov. Gavin Newsom (D.) to a state health care commission, stated, &#8220;Any delay [to the call for ceasefire] is \u2064an act of racism when we have critical lives at stake.&#8221;\u2062 Marya has recently made controversial posts on X (formerly Twitter), including one suggesting that the &#8220;presence of Zionism in US medicine should be examined as a structural impediment to\u200d health equity.&#8221; She also shared a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrRupaMarya\/status\/1726077065726927051\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chart<\/a> \u200c attributing &#8220;trauma&#8221; and &#8220;inflammation&#8221; to &#8220;colonialism,&#8221; &#8220;supremacism,&#8221; and &#8220;capitalism.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Lara Kiswani, executive director of the Arab Resource and Organizing Center, an\u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/campus\/activist-group-backed-by-progressive-funding-powerhouse-pushes-high-school-walk-out-for-gaza\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">organization operating under\u2063 the wing of<\/a> a major Bay Area left-wing dark \u2062money group funded by billionaire George Soros, urged lawmakers not\u2064 to &#8220;appease a pro-genocide agenda.&#8221; She argued that most San Franciscans and Americans support a ceasefire.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> What\u200c are the main\u200c concerns raised by pro-Israel advocates \u200cin response\u200d to resolutions like the one in\u2062 San\u2062 Francisco?<\/h2>\n<p><span>  The \u200bcommunity who argued that such an amendment would derail \u200bthe focus of the\u2063 resolution. Ultimately,\u200c the amendment was voted down, and the resolution \u2063moved forward without it.<\/p>\n<p>Pro-Palestinian activists\u200c argue that it\u2063 is imperative for cities like San\u2062 Francisco \u200cto take\u2064 a \u2063stance on \u200bthe Israeli-Palestinian conflict. They believe \u2064that the United States, as a\u200c global superpower and ally\u200c of Israel, \u2062has \u200da \u200cmoral\u200b obligation \u2064to\u2063 hold\u200b Israel accountable\u2062 for its \u200bactions. They\u200c argue that the \u2062Israeli government&#8217;s policies\u2063 and actions\u2063 towards \u2063the Palestinian people amount to apartheid and colonization, and that by supporting Israel, the U.S. is complicit in the violation of Palestinian human rights.<\/p>\n<p>The recent conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza has been particularly devastating, \u2064with hundreds of Palestinians killed and thousands injured. The destruction of critical infrastructure such \u200cas hospitals, schools,\u2062 and homes\u2062 has created a humanitarian crisis in the \u200bregion. Pro-Palestinian activists argue that a sustained\u200c ceasefire\u200c is necessary to prevent further \u2063loss of life \u200cand to\u200b ensure the delivery of much-needed humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore,\u2064 they \u2063highlight the importance of condemning \u200dall\u200d forms of hate speech and violence against both\u2062 Israelis and\u2064 Palestinians. They argue that\u2064 antisemitism, Islamophobia, and anti-Palestinian sentiments fuel the conflict and perpetuate a cycle of violence and discrimination. By calling\u2064 for \u2062the condemnation\u200d of such rhetoric and attacks,\u200c the \u200bresolution aims to promote peace, justice, and equality for all people involved in \u2062the conflict.<\/p>\n<p>However, the pro-Israel camp argues that resolutions\u200b such as this one oversimplify\u200d a complex geopolitical issue and fail to take into\u200c account Israel&#8217;s legitimate security \u2062concerns.\u200b They argue \u200dthat \u200bHamas, recognized by the U.S. as a terrorist \u2064organization, poses a threat to \u200dthe Israeli people with its rocket \u200dattacks and terrorist activities.
