However, as they\u200c enter the election year of 2024, their majority has been further diminished due to the absence \u200dof key members.<\/p>\n<h3>Three\u200c Republican Absences Impacting House Control<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>\n    <strong>Former Republican California Rep. Kevin McCarthy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>McCarthy, who\u200c was previously \u200dthe House speaker, resigned from the \u2062chamber on Dec.\u200b 31, 2023. This decision came after a tumultuous year in which he was\u2064 ousted by a group of House Republicans and Democrats.\u2062 McCarthy chose not to seek reelection in 2024\u2062 and will not complete \u200chis term. A\u200d special election \u2063will determine his \u200dsuccessor\u200c in his \u200bsafe Republican district.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n    <strong>House Majority Leader Steve\u2063 Scalise (R-LA)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Scalise \u2063will be absent from Washington, D.C., for \u2062the entire month of January as he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mayor-demings-scolds-ron-desantis-take-care-of-florida-not-just-family\/\" title=\"Mayor Demings Scolds Ron DeSantis: Take Care of Florida, Not Just Family\">undergoes cancer treatment<\/a>. After completing chemotherapy in December, he will undergo a \u200b<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/majority-leader-scalise-to-miss-all-of-january-as-he-undergoes-stem-cell-treatment\/\" title=\"Scalise, Majority Leader, to miss January for stem cell treatment\">stem\u2063 cell transplant<\/a>. His \u200cabsence is\u2064 expected to last until February.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n    <strong>Rep. Bill Johnson (R-OH)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Johnson will be leaving the House in the coming weeks to assume the \u200brole of president at Youngstown State \u2063University. He will resign\u200c from the House on Jan. 21,\u2064 earlier than the expected start date of March 15\u2063 for his new \u2063position.
