Amid intense\u200c backlash, he\u2019s since tried\u200d to run damage control, signing an executive order on Friday that bans only trans surgeries<\/em> for minors. We hope Ohio Republicans still override\u2063 DeWine\u2019s veto. <\/p>\n

There\u2019s more going on behind the scenes of \u2064the medical\u200c establishment, however, especially as it relates\u200b to the \u201cgender dysphoria\u201d diagnosis. Gender dysphoria must be addressed \u2064in conjunction\u2063 with contributing factors, such as adverse childhood experiences<\/a>, but instead licensed clinicians rush children toward life-altering medical \u200cinterventions.<\/p>\n

If you pay any attention to the conversation\u2064 surrounding so-called\u2064 gender identity, you might be led to\u2064 believe sex is not \u2063real and that its binary nature is a created concept\u200d that can be altered to \u200balign with a person\u2019s psychological beliefs about \u2064his or her sex. \u2064Such is the thinking that undergirds gender\u2062 dysphoria, a \u200ccondition listed in the Diagnostic Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition<\/em> (DSM). The diagnostic criteria\u200c hold<\/a> that gender dysphoria is \u201ca marked incongruence with one\u2019s experienced\/expressed gender<\/a> and\u2063 assigned gender.\u201d<\/p>\n
The key to the gender dysphoria diagnosis hinges on the\u200c presence of distress. If a person experiences\u200c marked \u2063distress about being identified as transgender, that distress can be labeled a disorder. \u200bIf a person\u200b does not experience marked distress, advocates hold that \u200dperson\u2019s transgender\u2064 identity ought to \u200bbe considered normal. \u200b <\/p>\n
In\u200d 2013, the gender \u2062dysphoria diagnosis was changed<\/a> to include this understanding to\u200d normalize what was \u200cpreviously considered a \u200bdisorder. Since then, the conceptualization of gender dysphoria has become muddled. It \u2064is no longer clear that there can be a therapeutic goal of helping people\u2064 shed \u2064the delusion that they can truly \u200dlive as a\u2064 sex other than what \u2062is written in their genetic code.<\/p>\n

Our medical system does not allow\u200d for insurance reimbursement without a diagnostic\u2064 code. When\u200c it comes \u200dto gender dysphoria, it would seem the diagnosis is often \u200dnot being given for the purpose \u2064of remedying the root causes of mental distress. Instead, the \u200ddiagnosis is\u200c increasingly being used as \u200ca \u200cvehicle for payment<\/a> \u200bto change one\u2019s physiological appearance.<\/p>\n
If this were not the case, we would see the mental health profession researching and embracing other clinical modalities that are known\u200b to help with psychological\u2064 needs common \u200damong \u2062those\u2062 who claim a transgender identity. Currently, the only \u201ctreatment\u201d<\/a> endorsed and propagated by these professional and medical boards is \u2063so-called\u2062 gender-affirming care<\/a><\/a>, which is actually medically assisted self-harm. \u200cGender-affirming care is a one-track approach swaddled in a\u200d dogmatic ideology, and it shuns any other approach that does not entail denying biological realities.<\/p>\n
Diagnosis is just as vital to the \u201ctreatment\u201d process as getting insurance to pay for\u2064 it because it\u200b precedes \u2063the development of an intervention. In most instances, a clinician has the latitude to give a provisional diagnosis and, if necessary, pivot \u200cto a better-suited \u2064diagnosis and intervention once time and ongoing assessment have \u200dmore accurately revealed the nature of the problem. This is \u200cnot the case with a\u2064 gender dysphoria diagnosis. The therapeutic and\u2062 public community alike have\u2062 been told that \u200dthe gender\u2062 dysphoric\u200b condition can be remedied only by altering \u200cor excommunicating \u200cparts of the\u200c body so that people can appear outwardly more like what they feel internally. This invasive physiological intervention has been billed \u200bas \u200d life-saving care<\/a>,\u2063 and backing away from such a\u2063 course of action has\u2064 been posited as unethical.<\/p>\n
One of\u200c the authors, Walt Heyer, was diagnosed with gender\u200d dysphoria and given hormones and surgery only to discover, like\u2063 the vast \u200cmajority of regretters and detransitioners \u200dhave, that the misuse of the gender \u2062dysphoria diagnostic \u2062term enacts painful personal consequences.<\/p>\n

This approach would necessitate\u2062 a thorough and ongoing evaluation of a person and his or \u2062her life experiences that have formed the presenting gender distress, \u2063a \u2062stark difference from \u200bthe current conceptualization that promotes a haphazard, catch-all approach to \u2063diagnostics.<\/p>\n
For\u200d example, it is \u2064well-documented that adverse childhood \u2062events<\/a> contribute to many types\u200d of mental disorders and distress<\/a>. This term\u2064 refers to a range of negative and highly stressful experiences a child may \u200bexperience firsthand or as a witness, such as physical neglect, parental separation or\u2062 divorce, living in a household in which domestic violence\u2063 occurs,\u2062 or living in \u200ba household with \u200ban alcoholic. These negative experiences\u2063 have the potential to\u2063 alter<\/a> the \u2064brain,\u2062 where \u2063the most basic\u200b human needs originate\u2062 and a person\u2019s \u2063identity\u200c is\u2063 formed.<\/p>\n
In one large-scale study<\/a>,\u200d transgender-identifying youth reported\u2063 having other mental health diagnoses that were present\u2062 before<\/em> the onset of transgender belief. This \u2063study\u200c compared more than \u200b1,300 transgender-believing youth with \u2064age-matched peers \u200bfrom \u200cthree large\u2064 pediatric practices \u2062in California and \u2064Georgia. The\u200b findings showed psychological disorders \u2064such as\u2063 anxiety,\u2063 depression, and \u200battention deficit disorders were\u200b several times\u2063 higher than the \u2063peer group. Suicidal ideation was\u200b up to 54 times higher, and self-harm was up to 144 times higher.<\/p>\n
Other studies<\/a> of transgender-identified individuals have also reported<\/a> a high frequency of\u2063 childhood emotional and physical neglect and abuse.
