However,\u200d it still \u2063faces a challenging court battle before it can secure a spot on the ballot.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative, led\u200c by the abortion-rights \u2063group\u2063 Floridians \u200cProtecting Freedom, has already gathered\u2062 an \u2063impressive 911,169 valid signatures, surpassing \u200dthe required 891,523 signatures for qualification.\u200b Before it can be presented to \u2062voters, the petition must\u2064 undergo a judicial review by the Florida Supreme\u2063 Court. Nevertheless, Florida Democrats are celebrating this milestone.<\/p>\n<h3>Florida Democrats\u2064 Stand Strong in the Fight for Reproductive \u200cRights<\/h3>\n<p>Florida Democratic Party Chairwoman Nikki Fried expressed her confidence in the initiative, stating, &#8220;We know what will happen if \u200breproductive rights make it \u2064onto the ballot in 2024 \u2014 \u2062just like in every other state since Dobbs, Florida voters will choose to keep the government out of their healthcare decisions. Florida is the next battleground \u200din a wave \u200bof post-Dobbs movements to protect our freedoms, and the Florida Democratic Party stands ready\u2064 to help \u200dget this movement across the finish line in November.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The ballot initiative aims to ban restrictions on\u2062 abortion \u2062procedures before 24 weeks, with an exception for cases where it \u200dis necessary\u200c to protect the patient&#8217;s health, as determined by their healthcare provider. Currently, abortion is illegal in Florida \u200cafter 15 weeks, with exceptions for rape, incest, human trafficking, or \u200cthe health \u2064of the mother.\u2063 A six-week \u2064ban with exceptions is still pending \u2064legal\u2064 review.<\/p>\n<p>Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody \u2063has voiced her opposition to the initiative, urging the Florida \u200bSupreme Court to reject it due to the vagueness of its wording. This would protect women&#8217;s access to \u200dsafe and legal \u200cabortion \u200dservices, regardless of any future \u2063changes in federal laws \u2063or court \u200cdecisions.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, Florida law does \u2062not explicitly protect a woman&#8217;s right to choose an abortion. While the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Roe\u2064 v. \u200bWade legalized abortion \u200dnationwide in 1973,\u200c individual states have the ability to \u2064place restrictions on the procedure.\u200b This creates uncertainty for\u200d women in Florida who may face increasing \u2063barriers \u200dto access in the future.<\/p>\n<p>With this ballot initiative, FARF hopes to change that.
