The student loan issue was not something addressed by\u200c the White House in\u200d the end in a comprehensive\u200c way, according to many \u2063young voters. \u200dAre you going to try\u2063 to finish those\u200d jobs in particular?&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Jean-Pierre acknowledged that the White\u2062 House&#8217;s 2024 \u200dpriorities did not explicitly mention \u200cstudent loans but emphasized that President Biden had taken steps despite facing obstacles.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;The president put forth \u2064a plan, he wanted to keep\u2063 his promise on dealing with the student loan \u2063debt that is really crushing families\u2064 across the country, \u200band he took steps even \u2062though the plan that he put forth was stopped, certainly, by \u2064folks in\u200b Congress.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Although Congress overturned Biden&#8217;s $400 \u2064billion student loan forgiveness plan, the president vetoed it. However, the Supreme Court later ruled \u200cthe move unconstitutional, leading to \u200dthe situation mentioned by Cornish.<\/p>\n<p>Since then,\u2063 the administration has implemented smaller measures, totaling $132 billion for \u20623.6 million\u2062 debtors. \u200dJean-Pierre highlighted\u2063 these actions in the interview, stating, &#8220;He still took action even though his hands\u2062 were\u2063 tied by the courts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While this response may not fully satisfy young voters, who are showing signs \u2062of wavering support for Biden, it has also ignited\u200c conservatives. The \u200cRepublican\u200b National Committee criticized Biden&#8217;s &#8220;unconstitutional, unilateral student loan bailout&#8221; that was blocked by the courts.<\/p>\n<p>Biden himself \u2062has argued that \u2063he is now\u2062 working \u2064against\u2062 the court&#8217;s ruling.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;I \u2062went to the Supreme Court to eliminate\u2063 student debt that was out there,&#8221; \u2063the president said in \u2064Milwaukee on Dec. 20. &#8220;And guess what? The Supreme Court ruled against it. But I \u200cstill got 136 million people&#8217;s\u200c debt relieved.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Despite \u200dthe legality debate,\u2064 advocates\u2064 for student loan forgiveness\u200b are applauding the effort.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;To be clear, young voters are upset that an extreme conservative majority on the Supreme \u200bCourt and Republicans in Congress are fighting tooth and nail to block President Biden&#8217;s efforts to address the burden of student loan debt,&#8221; said Aissa Canchola Ba\u00f1ez, senior adviser for the Student Borrower Protection Center. &#8220;The president and this administration aren&#8217;t backing down, and as a result, more \u2062than $130 billion in student loan debt \u2064has been canceled, and there is no sign that they will stop anytime soon.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>A \u200clarger battle looms over future\u200d cancellation efforts\u200d and the Department of Education&#8217;s SAVE plan, which aims \u2063to prevent full repayment of most student \u200bloans. However, even if Republicans succeed in eliminating the \u2063program, it won&#8217;t benefit \u200dthose already burdened with student debt, leading to more questions\u2063 for Jean-Pierre\u2063 and Biden.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;They have heard from you that, essentially, this is something the president has tried to do,&#8221; the CNN host said. &#8220;Do you think that over time,\u200c they \u2063start to feel like trying isn&#8217;t enough?&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Biden initially announced the student debt transfer in August 2022, but it was blocked by the Supreme Court in June 2023.
