A leaked document<\/a> coauthored by American and Chinese scientists provides fresh and disturbing evidence \u200bsupporting the Covid origin lab-leak theory<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Emily Kopp, an \u2062investigative journalist at U.S. Right to Know<\/a>, an online publication about \u201cPursuing \u200dtruth and\u2062 transparency \u200cfor public health,\u201d reported<\/a> recently that her organization has obtained\u2062 a 2018 grant proposal called Project DEFUSE<\/a>,\u200b coauthored by the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) and their counterparts in the United States, including EcoHealth Alliance<\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to Kopp,\u2064 Project DEFUSE \u201cproposed engineering high-risk coronaviruses of the same species as SARS and SARS-CoV-2.\u201d The content of this proposal is concerning for several reasons. First, the proposal \u201cinvolved\u2062 synthesizing spike proteins with furin cleavage sites<\/a> \u2014 the\u200c same feature that supercharged SARS-CoV-2 into the most infectious pandemic pathogen in a century.\u201d <\/p>\n

Second, the proposal publicly stated that such risky research would be done at American scientist Ralph Baric\u2019s high-containment BSL-3 lab at the University of North Carolina. But Peter Daszak, CEO of EcoHealth<\/a>, revealed in his private comments that once the project is funded, he would let the WIV conduct\u2064 some of the\u2064 risky research, despite knowing the WIV is only a BSL-2 lab and has \u201cfewer safety precautions than required in the U.S.\u201d Baric responded that \u201cU.S. researchers would \u2018freak\u2064 out\u2019 if they knew the novel coronavirus engineering and testing work would be\u200b conducted \u200cin a BSL-2 lab.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n

According\u200c to Kopp of U.S. \u200dRight to Know, \u201cBiosafety levels range from one (BSL-1) to\u200c four (BSL-4), with BSL-4 being the most stringent. \u2026 Many \u200cscientists say viruses that may be transmitted through the air should at minimum be studied in \u2062BSL-3<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daszak and other Americans on\u200d the project team\u200c omitted to disclose the WIV\u2019s involvement to Project DEFUSE\u2019s intended funder, the Pentagon\u2019s Defense Advanced\u200c Research\u200d Projects\u200d Agency (DARPA), \u201cin order to evade any national \u200dsecurity concerns<\/a> about doing high-level biosecurity work<\/a> in China.\u201d Daszak didn\u2019t provide Chinese\u2063 scientists\u2019\u200c resumes\u2063 to DARPA \u201cto downplay the non-US focus of this proposal\u2064 so that DARPA doesn\u2019t see this as a\u200d negative.\u201d<\/p>\n

What\u2019s even\u200b scarier is that these documents \u201calso show the researchers \u200cintended to use \u2063less \u200cregulated SARS-related coronavirus research as proof of concept in order \u2062to extend their high-risk methods to more deadly viruses like Ebola, \u2064Marburg, Hendra and Nipah,\u201d\u2062 according to Kopp. Some\u200d scientists\u2019 ongoing interest in experimenting with those\u2062 contagious and lethal\u200d viruses is one \u2063of the \u2062many reasons why we\u2063 must understand\u200b the origin of Covid-19 because\u2063 such knowledge may help\u2064 prevent the next pandemic.<\/p>\n

It\u2064 was shocking enough that he [Peter Daszak] failed to tell the world about \u2062this\u200d proposal, which was leaked instead. It was still more shocking to find that it\u2062 contained a specific\u200c proposal for inserting \u2018human-specific cleavage sites\u2019 into sarbecoviruses for the first time, because exactly such a feature is \u200bfound in the virus that causes Covid, and in none of \u2062the other 1,500 known sarbecoviruses. That cleavage site is the reason we had a \u200dpandemic because it makes the virus more infectious in human\u200b airways and \u200bit seems uniquely suited \u2064to the human system.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
Although DARPA\u200c eventually declined to fund Project DEFUSE, Daszak, who has a reputation for not \u200dtaking no for an answer, likely completed the proposed work with the WIV anyway with other funding sources. \u200bDaszak\u2019s EcoHealth has\u2062 received at least $8 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) between\u200d 2014 and 2021.\u00a0In 2021, after congressional \u2063Republicans\u2019 repeated requests, the NIH \u2063finally admitted<\/a> that it had funded the WIV\u2062 \u201cto study \u200bthe risk to humans of coronaviruses circulating in bats\u200d in\u2062 China\u201d through EcoHealth.<\/p>\n
NIH\u2019s admission came after the Intercept made public<\/a> two grant proposals submitted\u2062 by EcoHealth Alliance to the NIH on gain-of-function\u2063 research on coronavirus and a progress \u2062report<\/a> covering June 2018 to May 2019.<\/p>\n

These documents revealed that EcoHealth\u2019s experiments \u201cinvolv[ed] infectious clones of\u2062 MERS-CoV, the virus that caused a deadly outbreak of Middle East respiratory syndrome in 2012.\u201d EcoHealth\u2019s data also demonstrates that \u201cchimeric SARS-like viruses caused more severe disease in a humanized\u2062 animal model than the original virus,\u201d according to Alina Chan, a Boston-based molecular biologist\u200d and \u2063coauthor of the book Viral: \u200dThe Search for \u200dthe Origin of Covid-19<\/em>. All this information contradicts EcoHealth\u2019s previous repeated denials that no such high-risk experiment \u2062ever took place.<\/p>\n
Given what we \u200bknow now, \u200da coronavirus pandemic that emerged out of Wuhan more than three years ago seems less like a coincidence. Yet Daszak of EcoHealth has been \u200dthe most vocal lab-leak theory denier. Among his efforts to shut down\u200d any public discussion of the lab-leak theory, the most\u200c infamous one was that he organized \u200da group of scientists to co-sign \u200da letter published by Lancet, denouncing the lab-leak theory without \u2064disclosing his conflict of interest (his intimate collaboration\u2063 with the WIV).<\/p>\n
Last week, The Wall Street Journal<\/a> \u200b dropped \u200banother bombshell, that Daszak\u2019s\u200b EcoHealth\u200d is under federal investigation (civil, not criminal) about whether \u2064it double-billed U.S. taxpayers for hundreds \u2064of thousands \u200dof dollars\u200c for the dangerous gain-of-function coronavirus research in China. Daszak denied any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n
The leaked Project DEFUSE documents are a reminder, according \u2063to Chan, \u200dwho commented<\/a> on X, \u201cThis is a pattern of dishonesty. Clearly, we cannot take the word of conflicted \u2063parties. It is\u200b urgently important that the public and investigators gain full access to \u2064all EcoHealth documents relating to WIV research.\u201d<\/p>\n
The \u2062World Health Organization (WHO) estimates<\/a> that at least 3 million people worldwide died of Covid in 2020. Not to \u200cmention that millions more\u2062 people\u2019s lives, mental health, and\u2063 economic well-being have been negatively affected by government policies. Many of us \u2064still feel the effects of those policies today. The pandemic was a life-changing event for many. Therefore, we all deserve to know how the pandemic \u2064started and be better prepared for the \u2064next one. <\/p>\n
The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) \u2063has suppressed \u2062any \u200ddiscussion of the lab-leak theory for one apparent reason \u2014 to avoid accountability. Yet it is disappointing that the Biden administration, \u2064congressional Democrats, and their corporate media allies have shown little interest\u2062 in uncovering Covid\u2019s origin. They\u200b have suppressed the lab-leak theory as shamelessly as the CCP has done, despite that \u201cthe evidence that this virus probably came\u200c from the Wuhan Institute of Virology is now voluminous, detailed and \u2062strong,\u201d said\u00a0Matt\u2062 Ridley, and their collective silence \u201cspeaks volumes.\u201d<\/p>\n
Democrats and corporate media\u2019s collective silence and the lack\u2062 of curiosity about the virus\u2019s origin are likely driven by two reasons. First, they cannot blame the origin of \u2064Covid on Trump \u2063because the NIH funding occurred under former President Obama. Any investigation of Covid\u2019s origin will inevitably\u2064 lead to the questionable conduct of Anthony Fauci, former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director, and his allies at the NIH, from underwriting the WIV\u2019s gain-of-function research to suppressing the lab-leak theory since the beginning of the pandemic. \u2064 <\/p>\n
Second, the Democrats and corporate \u200bmedia\u2019 conduct during\u200d the pandemic has shown that they were only interested in \u2062taking advantage of a crisis to grab\u2064 more power and expand \u200btheir control over the country and the American people.
