However, the American\u2062 Water Works Association estimates that\u200c nationwide\u200c treatment costs could \u200dreach a staggering\u2063 $47 billion, while the Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies\u2063 predicts an annual cost of $6 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Local governments have taken legal action against \u2064PFAS manufacturers, accusing them of knowingly contaminating water \u200csources and endangering the public. \u200cDuring\u2062 the legal proceedings, the companies argued that the detected levels \u2063of chemicals posed\u200b no harm. Businesses are also grappling with the fallout. A laundromat \u2063owner in \u2064Wausau\u200d had to raise washing machine costs, resulting in a loss of customers. Meanwhile,\u2062 resident\u200c Jaime Pittsley switched to bottled water but \u2063still faces a water bill twice the normal amount.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t \u2063think residents should bear the brunt of these costs,&#8221; Pittsley expressed to the Wall Street Journal. &#8220;These companies should \u200cdefinitely be held accountable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, \u200cWausau is set to receive around $65 million from the settlements. \u2064However, hundreds of water sources covered in\u2064 the litigation have chosen not to participate, either due to low PFAS levels or to \u2063retain the option of filing individual lawsuits against the companies.
