And Paul, in\u2062 our last segment, we\u2064 were talking\u200d about efforts in\u200b the states to disqualify\u200b former President Donald \u200dTrump from appearing on state ballots \u200din the next election. You\u2062 mentioned that there are various\u2062 legal arguments being \u2064made. Can you give us a brief overview of\u200d some of \u200dthose \u2064arguments?<\/p>\n
PAUL KAMENAR, COUNSEL FOR NATIONAL LEGAL AND POLICY\u2064 CENTER: Yes,\u2062 John. There are\u200b several legal \u200darguments being made to\u2062 disqualify former President Trump. One argument is that he\u200d incited an insurrection on \u200dJanuary\u200c 6th, 2021, which goes against the\u200d principles of\u2063 our democracy. Another\u200b argument is that\u200c he violated the emoluments clause of\u200c the Constitution \u200bby profiting from foreign governments while in office.\u2063 Additionally, there \u2062are arguments being made\u200d based on his handling\u2064 of the\u2063 COVID-19 pandemic and his alleged obstruction of\u2063 justice during the Mueller investigation.<\/p>\n
JOHN HINES: And Paul, what is the likelihood that these efforts will be \u2062successful?<\/p>\n
PAUL KAMENAR: It \u2062is difficult to say \u200cfor \u2063certain, but\u2062 it is possible that\u200b the Supreme Court could \u200dexpedite these cases \u200band make a decision before the next election. The Court has the authority to hear \u200ccases that involve federal \u2063constitutional issues, and these arguments certainly fall under that category. If the Court \u2064were to rule in favor of disqualifying President Trump, it would set a\u200c precedent for future cases involving the \u200celigibility of\u200b candidates for public office.<\/p>\n
