However, public\u2064 health agencies remain cautiously\u2062 optimistic.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019re dealing with a disease that is\u200d invariably fatal, incurable, and highly contagious,&#8221; warns Cory Anderson, an epidemiologist at the \u200bCenter for Infectious Disease Research and \u2063Policy at the University of Minnesota.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>CWD affects \u200cvarious animals such as\u200d deer, elk, reindeer, sika deer, and moose, and has \u200dbeen detected in North America, northern Europe, and Asia, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/p>\n<p>The\u200d symptoms of CWD, \u200cincluding severe weight loss and neurological issues, can take over a year to\u200d manifest. Unfortunately, there is currently no treatment\u200b or vaccine\u2062 available \u2062for animals affected by the disease.<\/p>\n<p>Since the first case of CWD was discovered \u200bin Yellowstone National Park\u2062 in November, ecologists and epidemiologists have\u200b been sounding the alarm. The\u200d disease has now spread to 31 states,\u200b including Virginia\u200d and \u2063Maryland.<\/p>\n<p>Public health officials are increasingly concerned about the rise of\u200d zoonotic pathogens, which can be transmitted\u2064 from animals to humans. As human settlements and agricultural\u200c activities encroach upon animal habitats, the risk of exposure to\u2064 infected animals becomes greater.<\/p>\n<p>The \u200bWorld Health Organization classifies CWD in the same category as scrapie disease in sheep and goats, as well as bovine spongiform encephalopathies \u2063(Mad Cow Disease), as they all produce similar symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>In 1996, the\u2063 WHO reported \u200bthe \u2064first case\u200c of Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), a rare and fatal\u200d neurodegenerative condition with symptoms similar\u200b to CWD and Mad \u2063Cow Disease. vCJD is strongly linked \u200cto the consumption of infected\u200b meat.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the WHO&#8217;s\u2063 recommendations for meat product \u2064surveillance since 1997, it is estimated that over 7,000 CWD-infected \u2063animals have been unknowingly consumed by humans,\u2062 according to the Alliance for Public Wildlife.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Osterholm, \u2064a colleague of Anderson, describes CWD as a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/sri-lanka-crisis-shows-the-damning-consequences-of-western-elites-green-revolution\/\" title=\"Sri Lanka Crisis Shows The Damning Consequences Of Western Elites\u2019 Green Revolution\">slow-moving disaster<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While there \u200bhave been no\u2063 reported cases of \u2064CWD infection in humans,\u200c according to the CDC, they advise hunters in areas\u200c with CWD to take precautions. This includes having venison tested for the \u200bdisease before consumption.<\/p>\n<p>Hunters are also advised to avoid shooting or handling meat from sick-looking or\u200d strange-acting animals. However, the researchers emphasize that more research is\u2062 needed to fully \u200cunderstand the potential\u2062 risks.<\/p>\n<p>Another study conducted by scientists at the\u2062 University\u2062 of\u200c Edinburgh found that CWD prions, the infectious agents responsible for the disease, can\u2063 bind to \u2062human proteins in a laboratory setting. This finding raises concerns about the potential for CWD transmission to humans.<\/p>\n<p>The implications of\u2063 CWD transmission to \u200dhumans are significant.
