(Photo by ADEM ALTAN\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>OAN\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/tag\/brooke-mallory\">Brooke Mallory<\/a><br \/>12:57\u200d PM \u2013 Tuesday, December 26, 2023<\/p>\n<p>On \u2064Tuesday, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/congressional-republicans-call-on-biden-administration-to-act-swiftly-on-ethiopia-crisis\/\" title=\"Congressional Republicans Call on Biden Administration to Act Swiftly on Ethiopia Crisis\">foreign affairs committee<\/a> of the Turkish parliament approved Sweden\u2019s NATO membership application, bringing the Nordic nation\u2014which had previously been nonaligned\u2014one step closer to becoming \u200da member of the Western military alliance.<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-3\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px; text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-3'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>The last step in Turkey\u2019s legislative procedure will now require the general assembly \u2062of the Turkish Parliament to adopt Sweden\u2019s accession treaty. <\/p>\n<p>NATO member Turkey has been holding up Sweden\u2019s approval of its membership for more than a year, claiming that \u2062the nation is too forgiving of organizations that Ankara \u200cviews as security concerns, such as Kurdish militants and\u200d members of a network that Ankara\u2063 holds responsible \u2062for a\u2063 failed coup attempt in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The foreign affairs committee of the Turkish Parliament had started debating Sweden\u2019s NATO membership last month. However, lawmakers from Erdogan\u2019s ruling party moved\u200c to postpone \u2064the meeting, claiming that discussions with Sweden hadn\u2019t \u201cmatured\u201d sufficiently and that certain topics needed further explanation.<\/p>\n<p>When the committee reconvened on Tuesday, a sizable majority of the lawmakers there voted in support of Sweden\u2019s bid\u2064 to join.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Foreign Minister Burak Akcapar briefed the committee members before the vote, outlining the actions Sweden has taken in response to Turkish demands, such as removing limitations on sales to the\u200d military sector and\u200b changing anti-terrorism legislation in ways that \u201cno one \u200bcould have imagined five or six years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cIt is unrealistic to expect that the Swedish\u2063 authorities will\u2062 immediately fulfill all of our demands. This is a process, and this\u200b process requires long-term and consistent effort,\u201d\u200c he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The move was also welcomed by NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, who expressed his \u200bexpectation that Turkey and Hungary \u201cwill now complete their ratifications as soon as possible.\u201d With Sweden in\u2064 NATO, the alliance will grow stronger.<\/p>\n<p>Sweden\u2019s candidacy has\u2063 also been delayed \u200cby Hungary, according to claims made by Swedish lawmakers regarding the state of Hungary\u2019s democracy being \u201cblatant lies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hungary has not disclosed\u200d the potential date of the nation\u2019s ratification.<\/p>\n<p>Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the president of Turkey, publicly stated earlier\u2064 this month that \u2063the acceptance \u200cof Sweden\u2019s NATO membership depended on the U.S. Congress approving Turkey\u2019s desire to buy 40 F-16 fighter planes and kits to upgrade its current fleet.<\/p>\n<p>Erdogan also demanded that arms embargoes against Turkey be lifted by Canada and other NATO countries.<\/p>\n<p>The F-16 proposal from Turkey has the support of the White House, however, \u2062Congress is still against \u200dselling \u2062military equipment to Turkey.<\/p>\n<p>Following Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Sweden and Finland\u200b gave up their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/house-republicans-pass-bill-challenging-supreme-court-ruling\/\" title=\"House Republicans pass bill challenging SCOTUS ruling.\">long-standing principles<\/a> of\u200b military nonalignment in order to seek security \u2063under NATO. Following the ratification of Finland\u2019s petition by Turkey\u2019s Parliament, the Nordic nation became the 31<sup>st<\/sup> member of NATO in April.<\/p>\n<p>Turkey\u200b and Hungary are the two \u200bnations resisting NATO\u2019s expansion, which requires the consent of all current members.<\/p>\n<p>Other NATO partners that welcomed Sweden \u2063and Finland into the alliance quickly were irritated by the delays.<\/p>\n<p>Stay informed!
