The upcoming heavy rains and cold fronts pose a significant threat, increasing the likelihood of sickness, injuries, and even fatalities for ‌those trying to cross the United States border illegally, according⁤ to a release by the San Diego Sector Border Patrol.

Message to Migrants: Your Lives Are at Risk

“Our message to migrants who are considering an illegal border crossing is clear: Do not jeopardize your lives,”‍ emphasized San Diego Sector ‌Chief Patrol Agent Patricia‍ McGurk-Daniel. “The smugglers do not care about you. They⁤ have callously‍ abandoned others in the past, leaving numerous migrants to fend for themselves.”

She further added, “Human smugglers view you as nothing more than a commodity they⁢ can profit from, ⁤disregarding your humanity.”

McGurk-Daniel’s warning comes‍ just before⁣ the coldest days of the year in San Diego County, as human smugglers persist in guiding migrants across the border despite the harsh conditions. The release highlights the extreme drops in temperature during‍ the night, which pose a grave danger to those embarking on this treacherous journey into the country.

Deadly Consequences of Abandonment

“Migrants⁣ will not receive any warning from smugglers about the detrimental effects of cold weather on their physical⁢ and mental health, nor the very real risks of hypothermia, frostbite, or even death,” the release states. ⁤”Past incidents have shown that abandoned migrants⁢ have suffered severe injuries and, tragically,⁤ some have lost their lives due to their injuries and exposure to the elements.”

An unfortunate example of the fatal consequences resulting from abandonment is the⁣ heartbreaking story of three sisters who lost ⁤their lives in 2020 after being‍ left behind by a smuggler.

“Despite extensive rescue efforts‍ by ⁢CBP, the ⁤three ⁤women tragically succumbed to⁢ the cold weather,” ‌the release noted. “This devastating incident serves ‍as a⁤ stark reminder to migrants not⁣ to entrust their lives to⁤ criminal organizations whose sole focus is profit.”

To‌ mitigate the dangers posed by inclement⁤ weather, the Border Patrol has⁣ implemented various safety measures, including public service announcements, cold weather‌ kits, rescue beacons, and active patrols by the Border Patrol Search, Trauma, and Rescue team.

Protecting Lives⁣ Along Our Borders

“These ⁣assets and tools are designed to help minimize cold-weather-related injuries or fatalities along our borders,” the release emphasized.

What are some of the dangers faced by individuals⁢ attempting to cross the border illegally in San Diego County during severe weather conditions?

Emselves in dangerous environments. Do not believe their promises or assurances of safe passage. The reality ‌is that crossing the border illegally is extremely risky, particularly during severe weather conditions.”

The warning comes as San Diego County prepares ⁣for heavy rainfall and cold temperatures in the coming weeks. These adverse weather conditions can lead to hypothermia, frostbite, and other cold-related illnesses. Combined with the treacherous terrain ⁤and unpredictable waters of the San Diego border area, attempting to ⁢cross illegally becomes even more dangerous.

Chief Patrol Agent McGurk-Daniel further emphasized the dangers, stating, “We have witnessed numerous tragic incidents ⁣where individuals attempting to⁢ cross the border have lost their lives⁣ due to harsh weather conditions. We do not want⁣ to see more lives lost unnecessarily.”

Illegal immigrants, often relying on smugglers, face additional risks. Smugglers may ⁢abandon migrants in‌ remote areas ⁢or overcrowded stash houses, leaving them vulnerable to the elements. Furthermore, these smugglers often ⁣prioritize profit over the well-being of those they transport, cramming them into overcrowded vehicles or boats, increasing the risk of accidents and‍ injuries.

In response⁣ to the ‍increased risks during inclement weather, the San Diego Sector Border Patrol‌ has‌ ramped ⁢up their efforts to detect and apprehend illegal border crossers. They will be conducting more patrols of known smuggling routes and collaborating‍ with local law enforcement agencies to enhance border ⁤security.⁢ The aim is not only to prevent illegal ⁢border crossings ‌but also to‍ protect the lives of those who may be considering such a dangerous journey.

In light of these warnings, it‍ is crucial for potential migrants to understand the risks involved⁣ in attempting ⁢to cross⁤ the border illegally. San Diego County, known for its⁢ mild climate, may be particularly treacherous⁣ during times of heavy rain and cold fronts. Immigrants seeking a better life should consider legal alternatives, such as applying for asylum or working with authorized immigration channels. These legal pathways not only offer a safer⁢ option but also ⁤provide access to support systems and resources that can help individuals integrate into their adopted country.

San Diego Sector Border Patrol urges anyone ‌with⁢ information about smuggling activities or suspicious border crossings to report it immediately. By working together, law enforcement and the‍ community can help prevent tragedies and promote‌ safety along the border.

Chief Patrol Agent McGurk-Daniel concluded with a heartfelt plea,‌ saying, “Your lives matter to us. We want to ensure⁤ your safety ⁣and⁢ the safety⁤ of our ‌communities. Please do not ⁤risk‍ your lives by attempting to cross the border illegally. There are legal avenues available, and we encourage you to explore⁣ them.”

As the winter season brings challenging weather conditions to San Diego County, the message⁣ from officials is clear: attempting to enter the United States ‍illegally during inclement weather is not worth the risk. The safety and well-being of individuals should always be the top priority, and exploring ‍legal ⁤alternatives is the ⁣wisest choice for those seeking a better life.

San Diego Sector Border Patrol warns illegal immigrants about the risks of traveling to San Diego County in bad weather.
