Washington,\u2064 D.C., \u200bnot \u200conly\u2064 serves as the nation&#8217;s\u2063 capital but also holds the \u2062dubious distinction of being the prime location for petty theft crimes in the entire country. \u2063According to a \u2062comprehensive analysis\u200b of 2022 FBI\u200d crime statistics by Top\u200d Rated Law,\u2064 residents and businesses in Washington\u2064 are more susceptible to a range of offenses, including \u200dvandalism,\u200d pick-pocketing, purse-snatching, shoplifting, and theft, than anywhere else in the \u200bUnited States.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;The results of this \u200dreport are troubling, but \u200cnot\u200b surprising,&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>said House Oversight and Accountability Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;D.C. residents, tourists, Capitol \u200bHill staff, and\u2064 members of Congress have been attacked, robbed, carjacked, \u2063and assaulted while\u200b the D.C. \u2063Council has \u2062shown time\u200c and again that it is more interested in pursuing progressive policies than tackling the rise in \u2063crime. It is time for \u200dthe D.C. Council to address this \u200dpublic safety crisis.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Last year alone, Washington reported\u2062 a staggering \u200d3,671 incidents of petty crime per 100,000 people, with\u2063 a \u2064total of 24,664 incidents reported. Shockingly, more than half of these incidents were acts of vandalism. While \u2062over 40 states\u2064 had a\u200d higher \u2062number of petty crimes reported, Washington&#8217;s small size, spanning just 68 square miles,\u200b and lower population compared to most states\u2063 make its residents and visitors more\u200c vulnerable to crime than any other\u200d place.<\/p>\n<p>The \u200bseverity of\u200d the crime situation in the district has reached such heights that\u200d Virginia officials have cited it as \u2062a major reason \u200dwhy \u2062the local NBA team, the Washington Wizards, and\u2062 NHL team, the Washington Capitals, have contemplated relocating to nearby northern Virginia. Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears (R-VA) emphasized \u2062the importance of the surrounding\u200d environment, stating that attending\u200d a game \u200dshould not be marred \u2064by the constant need to \u2062look over\u2062 one&#8217;s shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>While Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser, a Democrat in \u200dher third term, \u200chas \u200dremained silent on the issue of crime and public safety, the company that owns both professional \u200bsports teams has expressed its concern and dissatisfaction \u2062with the\u200d state of affairs. Monumental Sports and Entertainment Director of \u2064Community Affairs Crispus Gordon highlighted the\u2063 negative \u200dimpact of the lack of prosecution \u2062on the community, suggesting that enforcement may be\u2064 lax despite the presence of police officers outside the \u200dvenue.<\/p>\n<p>Other states \u200dthat made it to \u200bthe top five list of \u2064states with\u200c the highest number of petty crime incidents per\u200b 100,000 residents include New\u2064 Mexico, Washington state, Delaware, and Oregon. New Mexico and Washington state reported 2,278 and 2,277 incidents\u2063 per 100,000 people, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to overall numbers, Texas\u200d takes the lead by a significant margin, with a\u2063 staggering\u200b 414,351 small crimes committed and reported to \u2063law enforcement.
