According to Moss, he gathered almost $1,000 for the project, which will begin in 2024. Little Free Libraries are small wooden boxes planted in neighborhoods that serve\u200c as book exchanges. Moss\u2019s libraries will be built in the South Bend and Mishawaka, Indiana \u200dareas.<\/p>\n<h3>Installation and Collection<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cWe have installation locations ready to go,\u201d Moss said in a recent update. \u201cWe\u200d will spend the winter months building \u2063and collecting\u200d books\u2062 and we will install them in the spring of 2024 when the ground \u2062thaws.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Motivation and Design<\/h3>\n<p>Moss wrote the\u2063 project was motivated by recent efforts from \u201clocal religious extremists\u201d \u2064to\u200d put books for children that show and describe queer sex\u200b acts on\u200d request-only shelves in the local \u2062government-run library.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want the bottom shelf to be accessible by littles,\u201d Moss said, displaying\u200d his Little Free Library \u2064design. Neither Moss nor the Northern Indiana Atheists responded to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<h3>Little \u2063Free Library&#8217;s Stance<\/h3>\n<p>The Little Free Library national organization \u201cdoes not police what stewards put in their Little Free Libraries,\u201d spokeswoman Margret Aldrich said in an interview. The Little Free\u2064 Library organization states on its website that \u201ceveryone who uses the library has the right of helping make \u200csure the types of books in it are appropriate to neighbors of all ages and backgrounds.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Concerns and Controversy<\/h3>\n<p>The libraries popping up in\u200b neighborhoods around the nation \u200dcould easily be browsed by kids without any parental oversight. A young person coming home from the school bus or just walking around his neighborhood could grab any book out of the small houses \u2014 indeed, that\u2019s \u200bwhat Moss\u2064 appears to be hoping for.<\/p>\n<p>As a largely volunteer and local-driven outfit, Little Free Library\u2064 cannot control the contents of every Little Free Library across the nation. Yet the national organization actively encourages local \u200dlibraries to stock extremist political books that \u200bmany parents wouldn\u2019t want their children to read.<\/p>\n<p>Through their Read in Color program, started after the George Floyd riots, the national LFL organization promotes buying and stocking Little Free Libraries \u200cwith LGBT \u2063materials that can, in theory, be accessed by children of any age. Little Free Library \u200boffers Read in Color reading lists that include categories for Jewish, Neurodivergent, African American, and Antiracist. Among the lists is one with LGBTQ+ \u2063books geared toward children \u2064as young \u200cas 4.<\/p>\n<h3>Partnerships and Banned Books<\/h3>\n<p>The organization partners with Banned Books Week Coalition,\u2064 the American Library Association, HarperCollins Children\u2019s Books, and Penguin\u200d Random House to spread books the majority of taxpayers don\u2019t\u2062 want subsidized through public schools or libraries. Little Free Library sells \u201cThis Little Free Library Shares Banned Books\u201d signs on its website for stewards to place on their libraries.<\/p>\n<h3>Quality and Appropriateness<\/h3>\n<p>Not all so-called banned books are equal. In fact, the \u201cbanned book\u201d crusade deliberately conflates quality books with obscenity, anti-white racism, and pornography. Harper Lee\u2019s <em>To Kill a Mockingbird<\/em> challenges the very real racism present in the 1930s Deep South. Anne Frank\u2019s <em>The Diary of a Young Girl<\/em> presents the hard\u200c truth of \u2063a\u200b life in Nazi Germany.<\/p>\n<p>Books like those are a far cry from Maia Kobabe\u2019s <em>Gender Queer<\/em>, \u2062yet all appear on \u201cbanned books\u201d lists. That 2019 graphic \u2062memoir includes explicit depictions of masturbation and oral sex. While Lee and Frank\u2019s works are\u200c appropriate for older \u200dchildren and adults, it\u2019s an open question whether Kobabe\u2019s book deserves any readership at all, its innocent cover art notwithstanding.<\/p>\n<p>Little \u200cFree Library and similar groups use the past or \u200bcurrent \u201cbanned\u201d status \u200cof these books to pretend all \u201cbanned\u201d books have been unfairly rejected for public subsidy. Adults need to consider that while\u200b some books may be too mature for\u200b young children but beneficial to older ones, others are grossly inappropriate for any age. Older children may be ready to learn about the nuances \u2064and dark \u200cmoments of history, but under no circumstances should be taught to touch themselves\u2064 from a book.<\/p>\n<h3>The Importance of Truth and Quality<\/h3>\n<p>One of the greatest benefits of reading is an experience of someone else\u2019s life, especially when that experience gives the reader sensitivity \u200dto nuance and inspires virtue. Yet, belying claims of inclusivity, \u201cdiversity\u201d as it is used by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/teachers-unions-aclu-want-biden-to-extend-student-loan-repayment-pause-cancel-student-debt\/\" title=\"Teachers Unions, ACLU Want Biden To Extend Student Loan Repayment Pause, Cancel Student Debt\">left-leaning organizations<\/a> too often takes on an anti-white, anti-Christian meaning. The benefits of challenging\u2063 content end when a charming story tells children lies they are too young to perceive.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, children need \u200bto learn empathy, understanding, \u200cand inclusion, but\u200b that doesn\u2019t come by way of lesbian and\u200c transgender stories for 4-year-olds. Rather, they need a\u200c firm grounding in \u2062the truth \u2014 \u2063girls are girls, boys are boys, and all people\u2062 have dignity \u200cand value \u2014 in order to \u2063become the friends\u2063 this world desperately needs.<\/p>\n<p>Fairy tales and other well-written children\u2019s literature\u2064 teach children important things without\u200d venturing into obscene sexual messaging. They introduce \u2064children to the realities of sin, sorrow, and death without blurring the lines between good and evil.<\/p>\n<h3>Considerations and Alternatives<\/h3>\n<p>Anyone who cares about the innocence of children \u200cshould think before purchasing a Little Free Library \u2064kit or charter sign from the organization, rather than building a non-branded one themselves. \u201cWe have \u200ba retail \u2064arm where we sell Little Free Library boxes. The revenue that comes \u200din from those sales goes \u200cdirectly into our programs,\u201d Aldrich said. This includes the Read in Color program.<\/p>\n<p>Adults should be conscious that\u200d Little Free Libraries near their homes may contain pornographic material and be prepared to guide children \u2063accordingly. Titles with innocuous, childlike cover art are not necessarily lovely and harmless: It\u2019s worth skimming through a book before handing it to your voracious reader.<\/p>\n<p>If a local Little \u200dFree Library offers queer children\u2019s books, consider taking them out and replacing them with something beautiful, such as <em>Little Bear<\/em>, <em>The Wind in\u200d the Willows<\/em>, or <em>Little House on the Prairie<\/em> \u2014 titles I grew up with. \u200cThose books and so many others teach friendship, sensitivity, and virtue without pushing \u200cany kind of sexual messaging on young readers.<\/p>\n<p>You could even build your own neighborhood library and \u200dstock it with enjoyable classics for all ages. If anything, we need more quality books readily available, not fewer.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<\/div>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> What role should parents and \u2064caregivers play in selecting appropriate books for children, and how \u200bcan Little Free\u200c Libraries \u2064support them \u2062in this responsibility<\/h2>\n<p><span>  Ontroversial books should be available for adults and older children who are \u200dready to\u200b engage with difficult \u200ctopics. It\u2062 seems \u200cthat the \u2063focus is primarily on promoting progressive ideologies and narratives, while neglecting the perspectives and values of conservative or \u2064religious individuals.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the\u2064 partnership \u2064between Little Free Library and various organizations, including the Banned Books Week Coalition and\u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/its-time-to-save-literature-from-the-woke-publishing-industry\/\" title=\"It\u2019s Time To Save Literature From The Woke Publishing Industry\">major publishing houses<\/a>, raises questions about the\u200d influence of \u2062political and corporate agendas on the selection and promotion of books. They are in the best position to understand\u2062 their \u2064children&#8217;s maturity level and \u200bvalues, and to guide them towards literature that reflects \u200dtheir beliefs and\u200c fosters intellectual and moral development. Little Free Libraries can be \u200ba valuable addition\u2063 to communities, but \u2062they should not be used as a platform to promote explicit or controversial material that may be unsuitable for young readers.<\/p>\n<p>In conclusion, while the idea of\u200c promoting \u200caccess to books and encouraging \u200dreading \u200bis commendable, it is important to exercise \u200bcaution and discernment when it comes to the content \u200cthat is made available, especially to young children.
