Negotiators on both sides have acknowledged that the border measure is critical to passing the legislation through \u2063both chambers.<\/p>\n<h3>Staying in Washington Over \u200dthe Weekend<\/h3>\n<p>Negotiators stayed in Washington, D.C.,\u200b over the weekend to meet\u2063 about the\u2063 potential\u2064 deal and will continue talks this week. Their\u200b Senate colleagues will join them starting on Monday, \u2063when the upper chamber will gather\u200c despite\u2063 it being Christmas recess to begin confirming the 11 stalled four-star generals held over from Sen. Tommy Tuberville\u2019s (R-AL) blanket hold on military promotions.<\/p>\n<p>Sens. James Lankford (R-OK) and Chris Murphy (D-CT) have been leading \u2062the negotiations, which have centered largely on changes to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/johnson-declines-to-commit-to-senate-gop-hed-bundle-ukraine-and-israel-aid\/\" title=\"Johnson refuses to promise Senate GOP he'll combine Ukraine and Israel aid\">federal asylum \u2062policy<\/a> and how the Biden administration uses \u2063the humanitarian parole \u2062authority. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) has also\u200b been heavily involved in the\u200c talks.<\/p>\n<p>There have also \u200bbeen reports that the White House has offered to establish a new border expulsion law and increase mandatory detention rates \u200cas part of the negotiations, though\u200c no one from the Senate working group or the Biden administration has confirmed as much publicly.<\/p>\n<h3>Concerns from Senate Republicans<\/h3>\n<p>Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell \u2063(R-KY) and\u200d Lankford wrote in an email to GOP senators on Sunday that, \u201cWhile there is progress\u2062 being\u200c made in the border \u200cdiscussions there are significant issues still under discussion and a lot of very technical\u200d work on\u2062 drafting which takes time\u200c to get right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The message, which\u2064 was obtained by the Washington Examiner via two \u2063recipients, noted that\u200c Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer\u2062 (D-NY) has the ability to bring the legislative \u2063shell back up for another cloture vote, though \u201cno firm decision has been \u2063made.\u201d Republicans blocked Democrats\u2019 last attempt at bringing up the shell\u200c before a border deal was reached, something McConnell vowed to do again if Schumer were to do the same.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout text and sufficient time to review it, it \u2063would not succeed,\u201d McConnell and Lankford\u2019s email read.<\/p>\n<p>Murphy and Sinema both described the note as reasonable when asked by reporters about \u2062it outside Schumer\u2019s office on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Two \u200bother\u2064 Republicans, Sens. John Cornyn (R-TX) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC), cautioned \u2064on\u200b Sunday\u200c that\u200c Democrats\u2019 speed and overall approach to \u200dhandling this bipartisan package was rubbing some\u200c in the party the wrong way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI talked to a couple of key negotiators yesterday,\u201d Cornyn said on Fox News Sunday.\u200d \u201cThey feel like they are making some progress, but I know Senator Schumer \u200cthinks there\u200c is going to be a deal cut behind closed doors and then jam it\u200d through the \u200bSenate and then \u200djam the House. That\u2019s not going to happen. But we are making some \u2062progress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bottom line \u2064here\u2062 is we feel like we&#8217;re being jammed,\u201d Graham said on \u2063NBC\u2019s Meet the Press, speaking for Republicans. \u201cWe&#8217;re not anywhere close to a deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Graham predicted that the effort to reach a deal and pass the \u2062package \u201cwill go into next year,\u201d and he criticized the White\u200b House for not getting involved\u2063 in negotiations earlier this fall.<\/p>\n<p>A group\u2064 of 15 GOP senators, including Graham,\u200d sent a \u2064letter to Senate Republican Conference Chairman John Barrasso (R-WY) requesting he schedule a meeting \u2064for members to discuss the negotiations in his capacity as a member of leadership.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRushed and secret negotiations with Democrats who want an open border and who caused the \u200bcurrent crisis will not secure \u2064the border,\u201d the group, led by\u200c Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), wrote. \u200c\u201cThe American public deserves an open \u2063and transparent process which cannot occur until the House\u200b returns\u2062 the week of January\u2062 8, 2024.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reached for comment\u2064 by the Washington Examiner, a Barrasso \u2063spokeswoman said, \u201cChairman Barrasso \u2062received a \u200crequest \u2064from 15 colleagues\u200b for a conference meeting \u2063on \u200cimmigration.
