Despite a recent demand\u2064 from over 40 Republican congressmen \u2062urging the Pentagon to\u200b halt the dismantling\u2062 and\u2063 removal of the monument,\u200d the decision remains unchanged.<\/p>\n<p>Safety measures, including the installation \u2062of safety fencing,\u2064 have been implemented around the memorial. \u200dThe removal \u2062process is \u2062expected to be completed by December 22,\u2063 with utmost care taken to \u200cprotect the surrounding landscape, graves,\u200b and \u200dheadstones,\u200c as stated by the \u200cArlington National Cemetery\u200b in \u200dan email.<\/p>\n<h3>Virginia Governor Disagrees with the Decision<\/h3>\n<p>Virginia Governor Glenn\u2064 Youngkin disagrees\u2064 with the removal and intends to relocate the\u200d monument to the\u200d New Market Battlefield State Historical\u200b Park \u2064in \u200dthe Shenandoah Valley, according to Youngkin&#8217;s spokeswoman, Macaulay Porter.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, an independent commission recommended the\u200d removal of the memorial as part of its \u2064final \u200dreport to Congress \u200con renaming\u200b military bases and assets associated with the \u2064Confederacy.<\/p>\n<p>The statue, unveiled in \u20641914, depicts a bronze woman adorned\u200c with olive leaves, standing atop a 32-foot pedestal. It was designed\u2063 to represent the American South.
