Throughout history,\u200c leaders have turned to\u200b this faith to inspire and strengthen the American people.<\/p>\n<p>In World War II, this belief \u2063played a crucial role. \u2062But first, let&#8217;s lay the foundation upon which these\u2064 leaders stood.<\/p>\n<p>The Declaration \u2064of\u200b Independence, our nation&#8217;s founding charter, states that the purpose of government is to secure the God-given rights of\u2062 life,\u2063 liberty, and the pursuit of \u2063happiness. These rights are revealed in the laws of nature and nature&#8217;s God, as\u200d explained in \u2063the Bible.<\/p>\n<p>The signers of the\u200d declaration, representing the newly declared\u200b free United States of America, professed their reliance\u2063 on divine Providence and pledged their lives, fortunes, and \u2064sacred honor to the\u2063 cause \u200bof liberty.<\/p>\n<p>Providence, the belief that God governs over the affairs of this world, is a\u2062 fundamental principle of Christianity. Even Benjamin Franklin,\u2063 who was not traditionally \u2063Christian, acknowledged the\u200c aid of the God of the Bible during the Revolutionary War.<\/p>\n<p>During the Constitutional Convention in 1787, when the delegates were divided on the form of the new government, Franklin\u200b called for a Christian minister \u200dto\u200c lead them in prayer for wisdom and guidance. He recognized the Superintending providence \u2063that had protected\u2062 them during the Revolution.<\/p>\n<p>George Washington, in one of his earliest acts as \u2063president, set aside a national day of thanksgiving to God in 1789.<\/p>\n<p>This is just a glimpse \u200cof our nation&#8217;s \u2064faith heritage, which \u200cis explored in greater \u200bdetail in the book \u2064&#8221;We Hold\u2063 These Truths.&#8221; Now,\u2062 let&#8217;s turn to the leaders\u200d of World War II.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to America&#8217;s \u2063entry into the war, President \u200dFranklin Roosevelt declared a national \u200bemergency in May 1941 as\u2062 the Axis\u200d powers threatened global\u2063 security.\u2063 The stakes were high, with Germany seizing much of Western \u2063Europe and Japan occupying parts of China.<\/p>\n<p>In his famous\u2063 &#8220;Finest \u200bHour&#8221; speech, Prime Minister\u200b Winston \u2064Churchill declared that the survival of\u2063 Christian civilization depended on the outcome of the \u200cBattle of Britain.<\/p>\n<p>Roosevelt echoed \u200bthis sentiment in \u200ba radio address, stating that\u200d the world was divided between \u200chuman slavery and human freedom, between pagan brutality and the Christian ideal. \u2064He affirmed the nation&#8217;s faith in the word of God and its\u2062 commitment to freedom.<\/p>\n<p>After the attack\u200d on Pearl Harbor, Roosevelt addressed the nation in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/breaking-president-trump-gives-pardons-to-73-individuals-and-commutes-another-70-sentences-steve-bannon-is-included\/\" title=\"BREAKING: President Trump Gives Pardons to 73 Individuals and Commutes Another 70 Sentences \u2013 Steve Bannon Is Included\">radio broadcast<\/a> titled \u200c&#8221;We Hold These Truths.&#8221; He emphasized \u200dthe importance of \u200dthe Bill of\u200c Rights, which enshrined \u2063the \u2063ideals of the Declaration of Independence, and highlighted the contrast between \u2063the acceptance of\u2063 these truths by the world and\u2064 the rejection of them by the Axis powers.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/OTD?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#OTD<\/a> 1941,\u2064 FDR gave\u2064 a radio\u2063 address on 150th anniversary \u2062of ratification of\u2062 Bill of Rights. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/gtcOOJy5nk\">https:\/\/t.co\/gtcOOJy5nk<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/y4RPlGlibs\">pic.\u200d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Presidential Trivia<\/h2>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;The rights \u2064to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness which seemed to the Founders of the republic, and which\u2063 seem \u2064to us, inalienable, were, to Hitler and his\u2063 fellows, empty words which they proposed to cancel forever,&#8221; Roosevelt said.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that in Nazi Germany, a\u200d citizen\u2019s \u200donly duty &#8220;is the duty of \u200cobedience, not to his God, not to his conscience, but \u200dto <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/hillary-clinton-goes-off-rails-view-compares-trump-hitler\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Adolf Hitler<\/a>; and that \u200dhis\u2064 only value is his value, not as a man, but as\u2064 a \u2062unit of the Nazi state.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To Hitler,\u2063 the church, as\u2063 we conceive it, \u2064is a\u200b monstrosity to be destroyed by every means at his \u200bcommand.\u2062 The \u200dNazi church is to be the\u2063 &#8216;National\u200b Church,&#8217; a pagan church, absolutely and exclusively in the service\u200b of but one doctrine, one race, \u2064one nation,&#8221; FDR said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>Following the \u200cAllied D-Day \u2062invasion\u200b of France on June 6,\u200d 1944, to begin \u2064to retake \u2062western Europe from the Nazis, Roosevelt addressed Americans by radio that night.<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;Almighty God:\u200b Our sons, pride of our nation,\u200b this day \u200dhave set upon a mighty endeavor, a struggle to preserve \u2063our \u2064republic, our religion and our civilization, and to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/psaki-pressed-on-holding-saudi-arabia-accountable-for-murder-of-journalist\/\" title=\"Psaki Pressed On Holding Saudi Arabia Accountable For Murder Of Journalist\">set free<\/a> a \u200csuffering \u200dhumanity,&#8221; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/walsh-biden-is-showing-us-why-there-needs-to-be-an-age-limit-on-the-presidency\/\" title=\"WALSH: Biden Is Showing Us Why There Needs To Be An Age Limit On The Presidency\">president began<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He concluded, using the words of Jesus Christ from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke%2011%3A1-4&#038;version=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lord\u2019s Prayer<\/a>, &#8220;Thy will be done, Almighty God.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Your enemy is well trained, well equipped \u2064and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely \u200c&#8230; I have full\u2062 confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill\u200d in battle. We will accept\u2062 nothing less\u200b than\u200b full victory.&#8221; \u200d-Dwight Eisenhower\u2019s \u200bwords preparing for D-Day. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/kIN7gSCAIJ\">pic.twitter.com\/kIN7gSCAIJ<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>Just prior to the pivotal Battle of the Bulge in December of 1944, the last major German offensive of\u200c the war, \u200bGen. George S. Patton ordered prayer\u200c cards to be distributed to \u200dhis entire Third Army, 250,000 \u200cstrong.<\/h3>\n<p>The prayer, drafted by Third \u200dArmy Chaplain James O\u2019Neill, was for better \u2063weather, so the war could be more quickly brought to a close.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>General Patton, desiring good weather for his advance to Bastogne, had Chaplain Fr. James O\u2019Neill compose a card to be distributed to\u2063 each one of the 250,000 troops under his command \u200bof the Third Army, and had all of the men pray this prayer. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/WW2?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#WW2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/lbuQOFILY1\">pic.twitter.com\/lbuQOFILY1<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Almighty and \u2062most merciful Father, we humbly beseech Thee, of Thy great \u200dgoodness, to restrain these\u2064 immoderate rains with which we have had to \u200ccontend. Grant us fair\u200b weather for Battle,&#8221; the prayer read.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Graciously hearken to us as soldiers who \u2064call\u200b upon Thee that, armed with Thy power, we may advance from victory\u2063 to\u2062 victory, and crush\u2063 the oppression and wickedness of our\u2064 enemies and \u200cestablish Thy justice among men and nations. Amen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The weather did change, \u200bby the way,\u200c and elements \u2062of the Third\u2064 Army were able to rescue\u200b the 101st \u2062Airborne\u2064 Division, which\u200b had been surrounded in\u2064 the Belgian city of Bastogne.<\/p>\n<h2>WWII Leaders Appealed to\u2062 God and Saving Christian Civilization in\u2064 Fight Against Axis Powers<\/h2>\n<p>In October \u20641944, when Gen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/75-years-ago-macarthur-fulfilled-famous-pledge-made-triumphant-wwii-return-philippines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Douglas MacArthur<\/a> made \u200dhis famous return to the Philippines, he \u2064announced via a \u200bradio address, \u2064\u201cPeople \u200bof the Philippines: I have returned. By the grace of Almighty God our \u2064<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-administration-shown-smoking-gun-evidence-proving-terrorists-in-ap-office-building-report\/\" title=\"Biden Administration Shown \u2018Smoking Gun\u2019 Evidence Proving Terrorists In AP Office Building: Report\">forces stand<\/a> again on Philippine soil \u2014 soil \u2064consecrated\u2063 in the blood of our two peoples.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have come, dedicated and\u200b committed, to the task of \u2063destroying every\u200d vestige of enemy control over your daily \u2063lives, and of restoring, upon a \u2064foundation of indestructible strength, the liberties of\u2064 your\u2063 people,\u201d\u2063 MacArthur\u2062 said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs \u2064the lines of\u2064 battle roll forward to bring you\u200b within \u2064the zone \u2063of \u2064operations, rise and strike,\u201d he said, then closing, \u201cThe\u2063 guidance \u2063of Divine God\u2062 points the way. Follow in his name\u200d to the Holy Grail\u2063 of righteous victory.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"firefly-embed\">\n<\/div>\n<p>After the American armed forces retook much \u200bof Manila in February 1945, MacArthur oversaw a ceremony reestablishing the Philippine government. As it concluded, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearhistory.com\/articles\/2020\/10\/15\/macarthur_at_leyte_island_580916.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">asked<\/a> those \u200dassembled to join him in offering the\u2064 Lord\u2019s Prayer.<\/p>\n<p>Following Nazi Germany\u2019s surrender to the Allies in\u2063 May\u200d 1945, President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/75-years-ago-nazi-germany-surrendered-allied-commander-gen-dwight-eisenhower\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harry\u2063 Truman <\/a>told Americans in a radio broadcast, \u201cFor this victory we join\u200b in offering our thanks to the Providence, which has guided and sustained us through \u2064the dark\u2063 days of adversity and into light.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Truman had become president following Roosevelt\u2019s death in\u2062 office in\u200b April of that \u2063year.<\/p>\n<div class=\"firefly-embed\">\n<\/div>\n<p>Truman appointed\u2062 a\u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presidency.ucsb.edu\/documents\/proclamation-2651-victory-europe-day-prayer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Day \u200dof Prayer<\/a> for \u2064Sunday, May 13, regarding the\u200d victory \u200din \u200bEurope, asking Americans\u2062 \u201cto unite in offering\u200d joyful thanks \u2064to God for the victory \u200bwe have won and to pray that\u200c He \u2062will support us to the end \u2064of our present\u200d struggle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MacArthur would oversee the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/wwii-ended-75-years-ago-japanese-surrender-entire-world-lies-quietly-peace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">surrender of Japan<\/a> on board the battleship USS Missouri on Sept. 2, \u20641945. He\u200d concluded\u200c by saying, \u201cLet us pray that peace \u200dbe now \u200brestored\u2064 to the world\u2062 and that God \u200bwill preserve it always.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"firefly-embed\">\n<\/div>\n<p>In a\u2062 radio \u200baddress to Americans \u2064soon afterward, the general <a href=\"https:\/\/ussmissouri.org\/kr\/learn-the-history\/surrender\/general-macarthurs-radio-address#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>, \u201cAnd so, my fellow countrymen, today I report to you that your sons and daughters have \u200dserved you \u200cwell and faithfully with the calm, deliberate, determined \u2062spirit of the American soldier and sailor based on the tradition of historical\u2064 truth, as against\u200d the\u200c fanaticism of an enemy supported only by mythological fiction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir spiritual strength and \u2063power \u200chas brought us through to victory. They understood that it \u2063was through this\u200c faith\u2063 that the American people\u2062 found strength, courage, and a sense of purpose.<\/p>\n<p>Today,\u200c as\u2064 we reflect on the\u2064 sacrifices and victories of the past, it is crucial that we\u200d remember the role that faith \u2063in God played in shaping the American experience. It is a legacy that continues to guide us \u200bas a nation\u2063 and should be embraced and cherished.<\/p>\n<p>In a world that is becoming increasingly secular, \u2062it\u2062 is more\u200d important \u2064than ever to reaffirm\u2064 our faith in God and the values that he has\u200b instilled \u200din our nation.
