But Silagi&#8217;s arrest was not his only encounter with police that day. Silagi\u200c was also arrested for petty theft\u2063 roughly four hours before the \u2064attack, both \u2062the Beverly Hills Police Department and Los Angeles County District Attorney&#8217;s \u2063Office confirmed. Silagi&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Booking-Record-Details-Inmate-Information-Center.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arrest record<\/a>, obtained\u200d by the <em>Free Beacon<\/em>, shows Silagi was released on cashless\u200d bail and given\u2062 a citation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On December 9th 2023, at approximately 4:54 am, Mr.\u200b Silagi was arrested for petty theft,&#8221; a \u2064Beverly Hills Police Department spokesman \u200ctold the <em>Free Beacon<\/em>. &#8220;After he was released from BHPD custody, he \u200cwas arrested approximately 4 hours later for the crime from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beverlyhills.org\/departments\/policedepartment\/mediarelations\/recentmediareleases\/121023bhpdarrestsuspectfollowinganassaultwithadeadlyweapon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">December 10th\u200c press release<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The \u2064revelation comes just \u200dtwo months after\u200d a <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7.com\/zero-bail-police-takes-effect-los-angeles-county-courts\/13851402\/#:~:text=The%20sheriff's%20department%20says%20those,in%20front%20of%20a%20magistrate.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">controversial zero-bail policy<\/a> went into effect in Los Angeles \u2064County.\u200d Under the policy, those arrested for misdemeanors\u200d and many\u2064 felonies cannot be held on cash bail and are instead quickly released from custody as they await trial.<\/p>\n<p>County prosecutor\u2062 George \u200dGasc\u00f3n (D.), who has received <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/california\/los-angeles-robbery-cashless-bail\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">millions in \u2063campaign contributions<\/a> \u2062 from liberal billionaire George Soros, campaigned on the policy and announced an end to cash \u2063bail on his \u2064first \u200bday\u200b in\u200c office in \u200b2020, \u2062calling the practice &#8220;unjust&#8221; and \u2064&#8221;unsafe.&#8221; While Gasc\u00f3n\u2063 last year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailynews.com\/2022\/05\/13\/embattled-da-gascon-reverses-course-on-controversial-zero-bail-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">walked back<\/a> his cashless bail approach, a Los Angeles judge in May\u2063 <a href=\"https:\/\/theappeal.org\/los-angeles-zero-bail-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reinstated<\/a> the\u200c policy, ruling that a \u200b&#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/catch-and-release-suspect-in-viral-la-flash-mob-robbery-was-released-on-cashless-bail-one-day-before-heist\/\" title=\"'Catch And Release': LA Flash Mob Robbery Suspect Freed on Bail Prior to Heist\">wealth-based detention system<\/a>&#8221; is \u2063unconstitutional. That decision went into effect in \u200cOctober.<\/p>\n<p>The victim in the attack, a 75-year-old \u2062Jewish man named Raphy, \u200d&#8221;sustained a laceration on his head after\u2062 being \u200cstruck with\u200d a belt,&#8221; police said. Raphy and his wife Rebecca were walking to Beverly\u2064 Hills Synagogue when a man, allegedly Silagi, approached them from behind \u2063and screamed, &#8220;Give\u2062 me your earrings, Jew.&#8221; Raphy wore\u200d a yarmulke during \u200cthe attack, meaning he would \u200chave \u2062been &#8220;clearly recognizable as \u2063Jewish,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/attack-elderly-jewish-couple-beverly-hills-synagogue-investigated-hate-rcna128964\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according\u200b to<\/a> the synagogue&#8217;s rabbi, Pini Dunner.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At\u200c first, it\u2064 was a\u2064 shock. There was\u200c a huge hard\u200d knock on my forehead,&#8221; \u200bRaphy recounted in \u200ban \u2062interview with NBC\u2063 News. &#8220;I\u2063 was really enraged, not because of the [injury] \u2062but because I was hit\u200d as a Jew.&#8221;\u200b Raphy and his \u200cwife chased after the attacker, prompting the attention\u200c of Beverly Hills police officers,\u200c who apprehended Silagi.<\/p>\n<p>Silagi was <a href=\"https:\/\/da.lacounty.gov\/media\/news\/man-charged-violently-attacking-jewish-couple-while-they-were-out-celebrating-shabbat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">charged<\/a> \u2064 with one count of attempted second-degree robbery, elder abuse, assault\u2064 with a deadly weapon, and two counts\u2062 of assault by means of force\u2062 likely to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/man-charged-with-attempted-murder-following-series-of-bb-gun-shootings-on-southern-california-freeways\/\" title=\"Man Charged With Attempted Murder Following Series Of BB Gun Shootings On Southern California Freeways\">produce great bodily injury<\/a>. Those \u2063charges also come\u200b with\u200b hate crime enhancements, which would lead to a longer sentence if Silagi is convicted. Silagi\u200c has a long rap\u2064 sheet that goes back more than a decade\u2062 and includes convictions for attempted robbery, battery, and disorderly conduct.<\/p>\n<p>Gasc\u00f3n&#8217;s office is recommending \u2062that Silagi be held on a $1.3 \u2064million bail, it\u2063 announced in a Dec. 12 press release.
