Senate Democrats blocked an opportunity to vote this \u200cweek on \u2063legislation allowing schools enrolled in the National School Lunch Program to serve\u2062 whole\u200d milk.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
On Thursday, Democrat Chairwoman of\u2062 the Senate Agriculture Committee Debbie Stabenow refused to allow lawmakers a \u2062vote on the Whole\u2062 Milk For Healthy Kids Act<\/a>, which passed the House Wednesday. The legislation amends the Richard Russell National School\u2063 Lunch Act to allow schools with federally \u200dsubsidized lunch programs\u2063 to offer whole milk\u200d alongside low-fat\u2063 varieties.<\/p>\n

\u201cAccess to healthy and \u2062nutritious whole milk should not be controversial,\u201d said Kansas Republican Sen. Roger Marshall. \u201cI was heartened to see the overwhelming bipartisan support<\/a> for our bill \u200dlast night in the House. With this momentum, we thought we had a real opportunity to come together and get a bipartisan win in the Senate to close\u200b out the year.\u201d<\/p>\n
It remains unclear why the Democrats blocked the measure. When\u200c reached for comment \u2064Friday, Stabenow\u2019s office \u2063referred The Federalist to the senator\u2019s brief remarks on the\u2063 Senate floor Thursday night.<\/p>\n
Stabenow cited incumbent dietary guidelines that \u200bbroadly recommend \u2063a\u200b low-fat\u200b diet.<\/p>\n
\u201cDairy is a very important part of a balanced meal, but one thing is clear,\u201d Stabenow said, \u201cand that is that school meal standards, currently based on dietary science, should continue to be based on \u200cdietary guidelines, not based on which individual \u200bfood products \u200bthat we support.\u201d<\/p>\n

While it \u200dmight \u200dbe\u200c a stretch to say the dietary guidelines caused <\/em>the unprecedented outbreak of \u200cobesity and disease, the low-fat \u2063recommendations certainly haven\u2019t prevented present health crises.<\/p>\n
