Vlaming \u201ctold his superiors his \u2062Christian\u2062 faith prevented him from using male pronouns\u201d for the student. The student complained, leading to a four-hour hearing with \u2064the school board, which ultimately voted 5-0 to fire Vlaming for \u201cdiscrimination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat discrimination then leads to creating a hostile \u200dlearning \u200cenvironment,\u201d claimed West Point Schools Superintendent Laura Abel. \u201cAnd the student had expressed that. The parent had expressed that. They felt disrespected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vlaming sued the school board in 2019. [VIDEO]\">circuit court judge<\/a> dismissed<\/a> the suit in 2021, the seven justices on the Virginia\u200d Supreme Court ruled that \u200cVlaming\u2019s case alleging that his rights to free religious exercise and free speech \u2064were violated deserves to move forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeter wasn\u2019t fired \u200cfor something he said; he was fired for something \u200dhe couldn\u2019t say,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/adfmedia.org\/case\/vlaming-v-west-point-school-board\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> Chris Schandevel, a senior defense counsel for the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), who represents Vlaming. \u200d\u201cThe Virginia Supreme\u200d Court \u2062rightly agreed that Peter\u2019s case \u200bagainst the \u2063school board for \u200dviolating his rights under \u200cthe Virginia Constitution\u2062 and state law should proceed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In December last year, \u200canother teacher represented by\u200c ADF filed a lawsuit challenging \u200dher termination for refusing to refer to a student by\u200b inaccurate pronouns. Ohio \u2062middle school teacher Vivian Geraghty was fired over her religious objections to addressing two students by names and pronouns contradictory to their biology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSchools can\u2019t force teachers to \u200cset their religious beliefs aside just to keep \u2063a job and they also can\u2019t force teachers to\u2062 say things that are untrue and harmful \u2064to students,\u201d \u2064ADF legal counsel Logan Spena <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/12\/13\/christian-teacher-fired-insubordination-preferred-pronouns-lawsuit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> the Daily Caller.<\/p>\n<p>In California, a Christian \u2062teacher was let go for her \u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2023\/02\/15\/christian-teacher-fired-lie-parents-students-gender-transitions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">refusal<\/a> to conceal students\u2019 attempts to dress and act as the opposite sex \u200cfrom parents. Jessica \u2064Tapia was a\u200c physical\u2064 education teacher who \u2062would not permit male students to use women\u2019s locker rooms and objected to district policy mandating \u200cthat teachers hide students\u2019 gender confusion from parents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[The district] called me back to work but presented me with \u200bvarious directives, \u200dto which I \u200dresponded I would not be\u200d able to comply with \u2064some of them based on my beliefs, such as\u200c having to call students by their preferred gender\/pronoun and withhold that information from their parents,\u201d Tapia <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2023\/02\/15\/christian-teacher-fired-lie-parents-students-gender-transitions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> the Daily Caller. \u201cI believe\u2064 God is love and the most loving thing we can\u2062 do is affirm one another in who God made us to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>Tristan Justice is the\u200b western\u200d correspondent for The Federalist and the author of Social Justice\u200c Redux, a\u2063 conservative newsletter on culture, health,\u200c and wellness. Peter \u2063Vlaming, a \u2063French\u2063 teacher at West Point High School,\u200c was fired\u200c in 2018 after refusing to address a student by\u2063 biologically inaccurate pronouns. Vlaming cited his Christian faith as the reason for his objection and\u2064 argued that using incorrect pronouns goes\u200d against his religious beliefs.<\/p>\n<p>The incident sparked a four-hour \u200chearing with the school board, \u200dwhich ultimately voted 5-0 to terminate Vlaming for &#8220;discrimination.&#8221; West Point Schools Superintendent Laura \u2063Abel claimed\u2063 that Vlaming&#8217;s refusal to use the requested pronouns \u200bcreated a hostile learning \u2064environment and made the student and \u200dtheir parent \u200dfeel disrespected.<\/p>\n<p>Vlaming took legal action against the school board in 2019. However, the\u2062 suit was dismissed by a circuit court judge in 2021. Now, the Virginia \u200dSupreme Court \u2062has stepped in, ruling that Vlaming&#8217;s case alleging\u200d violations of his rights to free religious exercise and free speech should be \u2063allowed\u200b to\u2063 proceed.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Schandevel,\u2062 a senior defense\u2063 counsel\u2063 for the Alliance Defending Freedom \u2063(ADF), which represents \u2064Vlaming, emphasized the importance of the court&#8217;s decision. Schandevel pointed out that Vlaming\u200c was not \u200cfired for\u2063 something he said, but\u200c rather for something he\u2064 could not say due to his\u200b religious beliefs. He praised the Virginia Supreme Court for recognizing that Vlaming&#8217;s rights under the Virginia\u2063 Constitution and state law were potentially violated.<\/p>\n<p>This case comes just months \u200cafter another teacher, represented \u2062by the ADF, filed a similar \u2063lawsuit in Ohio. Vivian Geraghty, a\u2063 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-texas-teacher-who-assigned-anne-frank-graphic-novel-deserved-to-be-fired\/\" title=\"Texas teacher fired for assigning Anne Frank graphic novel.\">middle school \u200bteacher<\/a>, was terminated for objecting to using \u200binaccurate\u200d pronouns when referring to two students. \u2063Geraghty argued that schools cannot force teachers to\u200b set aside their\u2062 religious beliefs\u200c or make untrue and harmful \u200dstatements about students.<\/p>\n<p>These cases highlight an \u2062ongoing debate surrounding \u200bthe accommodation of religious beliefs\u200d in educational settings.\u200d The \u2062clash between the rights of teachers to express their religious convictions and the rights of students\u2062 to be addressed according to their preferred\u200c pronouns \u200bhas \u2064become a contentious issue nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>In California, a Christian teacher was also fired for \u200bher refusal \u2062to comply with\u2063 pronoun\u2064 usage policies.
