Did Karine Jean-Pierre Just Put Biden in Serious Legal Trouble?<\/h2>\n

As press secretary for the White \u200bHouse, \u2063Karine Jean-Pierre\u2019s job is to keep President Joe Biden out of\u2063 trouble \u200d\u2014 a\u2063 not-insubstantial task, at least when one considers the verbal incontinence our 46th president has shown in \u2062the role.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
However, \u200bregarding Hunter Biden\u2019s refusal to comply with a House GOP subpoena to appear, one constitutional scholar\u200b contends it\u2019s not the notorious KJP\u2019s words bailing the president out<\/em> of trouble, but getting him into<\/em> it, instead.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, Biden refused to appear for a private\u200d deposition before the House<\/a>, saying he would only appear in \u200bpublic testimony instead.<\/p>\n
\u201cRepublicans do not want an open process where\u2063 Americans can see\u200b their tactics, expose their\u2062 baseless inquiry, or hear \u2063what I have to say,\u201d\u2062 Biden said during a\u200b media briefing outside the Capitol, according to The \u2064Associated Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat are they afraid of? I am here.\u201d<\/p>\n
The \u200ckey questions, of course, are what Hunter Biden<\/a> is 1) currently \u2062afraid of \u2063and\u200c 2) should be afraid of.<\/p>\n
In terms of what he\u2019s currently<\/em> afraid of, it \u2062has\u200b to be something \u2014 since it\u2019s worth noting that House Oversight Committee chair Rep. James Comer of Kentucky\u200d agreed he should have his chance to testify in public, but \u2062only after he testified on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
\u201cHunter\u2063 Biden is trying to play by his own\u200b rules instead \u2063of following the rules required of everyone\u200c else,\u201d Comer said in November.<\/p>\n
As for what \u200dhe should be\u200b afraid of: a contempt of Congress charge, since \u201csubpoena\u201d isn\u2019t a synonym for \u201csuggestion to\u2064 appear.\u201d What\u2019s more, conservative legal \u200bscholar Jonathan Turley said in an Op-Ed on\u200d Thursday,\u2064 his father now has something to be afraid of, too \u2014 all thanks to\u200b Karine Jean-Pierre.<\/p>\n
In the column, published at The Messenger<\/a>, Turley \u200dblasted Hunter for his media briefing,\u200c saying \u2064that \u201cBiden and his legal team committed another \u2064unforced error.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis one could prove as costly as pushing for \u2064an obscenely generous plea agreement and\u200d then telling prosecutors to \u2018rip it up\u2019 in July,\u201d\u200c Turley wrote. \u2064\u201cThe evidence against him is overwhelming, as shown in his\u200d second\u2064 federal indictment \u2062on tax charges. \u2026 Hunter\u2063 simply could \u200chave done what \u200bprior witnesses have done: Go in\u2064 and take the Fifth. \u2062That is what attorney \u200dand former IRS official Lois\u00a0Lerner did \u2014\u00a0twice\u00a0\u2014 when House Republicans wanted \u200cto ask her \u2062about the Obama administration targeting conservative groups.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was a no-brainer that someone appears to have radically over-thought on the Hunter Biden legal team,\u201d Turley added, noting that \u201cHunter \u200bcan now be held in contempt of Congress. That will force the hand of Attorney General Merrick Garland, who aggressively pursued Trump figures for contempt, including former Trump \u2063adviser Steve Bannon.\u201d<\/p>\n
That overthinking extended to the White House, where Turley said that \u201c[t]here is another possible cost to\u200c this move.\u201d<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, after Hunter\u2019s ersatz media briefing, \u2063 Jean-Pierre<\/a> was asked about it at her press conference. Her response? \u201cLook, as you\u2064 know, Hunter Biden is a private citizen. And so, I\u200c certainly\u200b would refer you to his representatives.<\/p>\n
But then:\u2063 \u201cThe \u2063president was certainly familiar with what his son was going to say. And I think what \u2062you saw was from the heart from his son. And you\u2019ve heard\u200b \u2014 you\u2019ve \u200dheard me say this; you\u2019ve \u200cheard \u200dthe President say this: When \u200cit comes \u200dto the president and the first lady, \u200cthey are proud of him continuing to rebuild his life. They are proud of their son.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
In between all the stuff you\u2019ve heard before \u2014 Hunter\u2019s \u2063a private citizen, the first couple is proud of him for transitioning away from spending millions \u200bof dollars<\/a> on prostitutes, cocaine and sports \u2063cars, \u200cetc. \u2014 there\u2019s that one problematic sentence: \u201cThe\u200c president was \u200dcertainly familiar with what his son\u2062 was going to say.\u201d<\/p>\n
Whoops, Turley<\/a> wrote, \u200cgiven that the comment \u201csuggests that the president spoke with his son before his act of contempt and discussed his statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf that is true, it was a\u2062 breathtaking mistake,\u201d he continued. \u201cOne of the four most obvious potential articles\u2064 of impeachment that I laid out in my prior testimony was obstruction. There already are questions over special\u200c treatment potentially being\u2064 given to Hunter\u2062 in the form of alleged \u2064felonies being allowed to expire, warnings\u200c about planned federal raids, and sweetheart \u200bdeals.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn \u2063addition, President \u2063Biden has enlisted White House staff to actively push challenged accounts of his conduct and attack the House\u200d Republicans\u2019 investigative process. Such acts could\u2063 legally bootstrap\u2063 prior misconduct into his presidency \u200dunder abuse-of-power allegations.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf this latest allegation is true, \u2062the president was speaking with his son about \u2064committing a potentially criminal actof\u200b contempt,\u201d Turley added. \u201cHunter was refusing to give testimony focused not on his own role but on his father\u2019s potential \u2064role in the alleged influence peddling<\/a>. The House \u2064can pursue evidence on that conversation and how the president \u2062may have\u2064 supported his son\u2019s effort.\u201d<\/p>\n
Again, this is unforced stupidity of the most astounding sort.<\/p>\n
Hunter and his attorneys refused\u200d to take an extremely generous plea deal\u2064 if it didn\u2019t involve a \u200bnovel, atypical clause which his \u2063attorneys\u2064 contended exempted <\/p>\n
What role could Attorney General Merrick Garland play in deciding whether to pursue charges against President\u200c Biden’s\u2064 son\u200b if he is held in\u2063 contempt of Congress<\/h2>\n
Rel=”noopener”>his past troubles\u2014there is an admission that would\u2062 catch the attention of any legal scholar.<\/p>\n
As Turley\u200d pointed out, Jean-Pierre essentially \u200cconfirmed that President Biden was aware of what Hunter was going \u200cto say during his media briefing. This is significant because it raises questions\u200b about potential coordination and communication between the father and son regarding their public statements.<\/p>\n
According to Turley, this could\u200b be\u200d an issue because if Hunter\u200b was subpoenaed to testify \u200cbefore \u2062Congress, any coordination between \u200chim\u2064 and the president \u2062could be considered witness tampering or obstruction of justice.<\/p>\n
This is a serious \u2062legal problem for President Biden, as witness tampering is \u200ca federal crime punishable<\/a> by imprisonment. And considering the supposed \u2062evidence against Hunter in his ongoing legal\u200d battles<\/a>, any evidence of coordination between him and \u2062his father could further complicate the situation.<\/p>\n
Turley also \u2063highlighted the potential involvement \u200dof Attorney \u2064General Merrick Garland, who has\u200b aggressively pursued contempt charges against Trump figures, including Steve Bannon.
