The House Republican leader specifically cited a speech Howell gave during the Women\u2019s White\u200b Collar Defense Association gala last \u2062month, during which the judge warned the country was\u2064 heading down an \u200c\u201cauthoritarian\u201d path.<\/p>\n<h3>Biden&#8217;s Off-Ramp Should \u2062He Bow Out of the 2024 \u2063Contest<\/h3>\n<p>Stefanik slammed the speech as \u201chighly\u200c inappropriate election\u2064 interference\u201d of the 2024 election that attempted to paint Trump as a threat to the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI write today to express\u2062 my serious concerns \u200dabout, and request an ethics investigation of, DC \u2063U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell for her highly inappropriate \u2064political speech she gave last month, at which she suggested reelecting President Trump will lead to fascism in America.,\u201d Stefanik wrote. \u200c\u201cJudge Howell\u2019s \u200bpartisan speech is obviously highly inappropriate election interference by a federal judge that undermines the public\u2019s trust in our courts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Howell made the speech during the gala with the women&#8217;s lawyer group on Nov.\u2064 27 as \u2063she received\u200b a \u201cchampion\u201d award. During that speech, Howell urged\u200d her colleagues to preserve democracy \u200dby ensuring facts remain at the center\u200c of \u2064their work. The judge \u200bspecifically referred to \u201cbig lies\u201d that\u2063 the 2020 election was stolen, claims she said later led to the Jan. 6 riot at\u200d the Capitol.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy D.C. judicial colleagues and I regularly see the impact of big lies at \u200cthe sentencing\u200b of hundreds, hundreds of individuals who have been convicted for offense conduct on Jan. 6,\u2063 2021, when they disrupted the certification of the 2020 presidential \u2063election at \u2064the U.S. Capitol,\u201d Howell\u200c said in her\u2063 speech, stopping short of calling out Trump by name.<\/p>\n<p>Howell played a major role in the judiciary\u2019s response to\u200c the Jan. \u200b6 riot during her time as chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Howell later stepped down \u200dfrom this position in March but still remains on the bench, giving her some \u2063sway as the court prepares for its historic trial of Trump and his attempts to overturn \u200bhis 2020 loss.<\/p>\n<p>Stefanik criticized Howell\u2019s remarks seeking to\u2063 tie the Jan. 6 riot to\u2062 \u201cbig lies\u201d that were told about the 2020\u200d election results.
