This is Mickey Mouse. This is exciting because it\u2019s kind of symbolic,\u201d Jennifer Jenkins, a professor of law and director of Duke\u2019s Center for the Study of Public Domain, said of the development. \u201cI kind of feel like the pipe on the steamboat, like expelling smoke. It\u2019s so exciting.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">United States law currently allows a copyright to be held for 95 years. This number has been extended several times as multiple groups, including Disney, lobbied for extensions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s sometimes derisively referred to as the Mickey Mouse Protection Act,\u201d Jenkins said of the laws, per AP. \u201cThat\u2019s oversimplified because it wasn\u2019t just Disney that was pushing for term extension. It was a whole group of copyright holders whose works were set to go into the public domain soon, who benefited greatly from the 20 years of extra protection.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The \u201cSteamboat Willie\u201d version of the world\u2019s most recognizable mouse is different than the more modern version that Disney fans know and love, which is a point the media company made in a statement to AP.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cEver since Mickey Mouse\u2019s first appearance in the 1928 short film \u2018Steamboat Willie,\u2019 people have associated the character with Disney\u2019s stories, experiences, and authentic products,\u201d a Disney spokesperson told the outlet. \u201cThat will not change when the copyright in the \u2018Steamboat Willie\u2019 film expires.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMore modern versions of Mickey will remain unaffected by the expiration of the \u2018Steamboat Willie\u2019 copyright, and Mickey will continue to play a leading role as a global ambassador for the Walt Disney Company in our storytelling, theme park attractions, and merchandise,\u201d the statement continued. \u201cWe will, of course, continue to protect our rights in the more modern versions of Mickey Mouse and other works that remain subject to copyright.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Earlier this year, A.A. Milne\u2019s original \u201cWinnie the Pooh\u201d characters entered the public domain, which led to some unique entertainment projects.
