The name Jackson Pollock brings \u2063to\u200b mind\u200c \u201cdrip\u201d paintings, Andy Warhol silkscreens of soup cans, and so on.<\/p>\n<p>To most art\u200b lovers, \u2064a reference to Russian-American artist Mark Rothko brings to mind large rectangular canvases \u200cwith deep tones\u200b that can take \u2063on a reverent, transcendent quality. But\u2064 a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nga.gov\/exhibitions\/2023\/mark-rothko-paintings-on-paper.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new<\/a> exhibit at the\u2063 National \u2064Gallery of Art attempts to give a fuller \u2063look at his oeuvre and put his\u2064 most famous work in a \u2063broader context. \u201cMark Rothko: Paintings on Paper\u201d allows visitors to take a \u2064fresh look at an artist they thought they knew.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-729413723\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-f5570c3bbe569f134b022915186460e8 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-f5570c3bbe569f134b022915186460e8\"><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Paper Works as Mini Canvases<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Giving his paper paintings their due through a dedicated exhibition \u200bseems wholly appropriate, as Rothko did not\u200c consider them inferior to his canvas works. While some artists\u200b only use paper for\u2063 preliminary sketches, Rothko considered his paper creations the equal of his canvases. In their preparation \u2014\u2062 he often \u2063hung them on stretchers, with paint flowing\u2063 to the edges \u2014 they can look\u2062 like\u2062 smaller versions of his famous canvas creations.<\/p>\n<p>The more than 100 paper works \u2064in this exhibit run the length of Rothko\u2019s career, from\u2064 his early days as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/struggling-artist-hunter-biden-asks-for-lower-child-support-payments\/\" title=\"Struggling Artist Hunter Biden Asks For Lower Child Support Payments\">struggling artist<\/a> in 1930s New\u2063 York to \u200dsome\u200c of the last works before his tragic suicide in \u20621970.<\/p>\n<p>The show \u200dstarts with his 1930s\u200c watercolors, which\u2064 seem light years away from the works \u200dof \u2064his later career.\u200b For starters, using watercolors, \u200bas \u2063opposed to oil or acrylic, seems \u200bsomehow \u2062foreign.\u200d The \u200csubjects\u200b also diverge from\u2064 his later work: Some of his\u2062 landscapes echo the works of Cezanne in Provence, while portraits of bathing women hearken to Degas.
