Government Persecution of Religious Sisters: A Battle for Freedom<\/h2>\n

Perhaps the most famous \u2062example of the government persecuting Catholic religious sisters in recent memory is the years-long fight\u2063 involving the Little \u200cSisters of \u2064the Poor<\/a>.\u200c For years, the nation watched as government officials attempted\u200d to use Obamacare mandates to force the Sisters to offer contraceptives and abortifacients \u200din their health plans.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
While such legal situations are terrible to behold, there is at least a consistency in the\u200b enforcement of the (unjust) law in\u2064 question. The Little Sisters of the Poor was\u200d not targeted by the law: The secular leftist \u2064orthodoxy demands that\u200b all<\/em> <\/strong>employers cover contraceptives and abortifacients for employees.\u200c There is a \u200bsimilar \u200cconsistency in cases like Masterpiece Cakeshop<\/em><\/a> and 303 Creative<\/a><\/em> \u2014 the laws \u200bare not targeting religious belief or practice in \u2064particular. Rather, they reveal how\u200b governments \u200care creating policies based on a \u200bfalse understanding of life and the human person and then \u2063imposing them on everyone. No exceptions. Not even for nuns.<\/p>\n

But it is a separate issue when state governments are emboldened enough to pass laws that explicitly<\/em> \u2063single out pro-life religious persons or organizations. Last year,\u2062 the Sisters of Life<\/a> (and with them all pro-life pregnancy centers<\/a> in the state of \u2064New York) became the latest victims<\/a> of targeted legal \u200battacks from a hostile state government.<\/p>\n
In \u20622022, New York enacted a series of state laws<\/a> to protect and promote \u200dabortion in response\u2064 to the coming Dobbs <\/em>decision. Among other troubling pro-abortion measures, the law<\/a> attempted to give the New York health \u2062commissioner power to request data from \u201climited service\u2062 pregnancy centers.\u201d Let us be clear: By\u200b \u201climited service,\u201d the law was singling out the pregnancy centers that do not \u2063provide abortion. The \u2063law allows the\u200b state to request a broad array of information including demographic information about the women who come to the pregnancy \u200ccenter, the services provided, what options or services\u200c the\u200d women are seeking, and what information the pregnancy center\u200c is giving to \u2063women who \u200creceive \u200bservices.<\/p>\n
There is much to\u2064 be disturbed by here. Why is the government demanding demographic information about women who come\u2064 to \u2063 crisis pregnancy centers<\/a>? Why does \u2062the\u2062 state of New York require a \u2064group of religious sisters \u2062to turn over information about what services it offers to women and what those \u2062women talk about when they walk through the door of a crisis pregnancy center? As New York City suffers from crises of mass migration<\/a>, homelessness<\/a>, and crime<\/a>, one would be justified to wonder why the focus on pro-life pregnancy centers\u2064 could possibly be a priority of state \u2062government.<\/p>\n
One would think that such a\u2062 direct attack singling out faith-based, pro-life pregnancy centers would be done in the dark. But Gov. Kathy Hochul\u2062 seemed to\u200b relish<\/a> the opportunity to publicly attack the \u201cNeanderthals\u201d who dare oppose\u200d the abortion regime.\u2062 She insists that women\u200b will\u2062 not have the \u201cright\u201d to abort their babies unless abortion is available in\u200d every \u200dfacility that calls\u2063 itself a pregnancy center. Somehow, the very existence of crisis \u2062pregnancy centers<\/a> that\u200b do not offer abortion and instead help\u2062 women and their children poses a \u2064dire threat.<\/p>\n

When the leaders of state \u2063governments \u2062engage\u200b in open\u2062 lawfare directly targeting pro-life, religious organizations, we should pay \u200cattention.<\/p>\n
A similarly disturbing legal situation arose \u200din Colorado recently in the Bella \u200cHealth<\/em><\/a> <\/em>case, where the <\/p>\n
Why\u2062 are these laws considered\u200d a direct attack on religious freedom and \u200dan effort to silence and marginalize those with pro-life beliefs<\/a>?<\/h2>\n
\u200dDoors? The answer \u200bis simple: It is an attempt to intimidate and target pro-life organizations and their mission to provide alternatives to abortion.<\/p>\n
These laws\u200b are not rooted in a genuine concern for women\u2019s health or safety. They\u200b are a direct attack\u2064 on religious freedom \u200cand a deliberate effort to silence and marginalize those who\u2062 hold\u2062 pro-life beliefs. \u2064By singling out pro-life pregnancy centers and demanding\u200c detailed information about \u2064their services, these \u200dlaws aim to discredit and undermine\u2063 the valuable work that these organizations do.<\/p>\n
The Sisters of Life, like the Little Sisters of the Poor, have dedicated their lives\u200b to serving others. They provide support, resources, and love to\u200c women facing unplanned pregnancies<\/a>,\u200d offering them an \u2064alternative to abortion and helping \u200bthem\u200c navigate through \u2062difficult circumstances. They \u2062do this out of a deep respect for the dignity and sanctity\u2064 of human life.<\/p>\n
But instead of recognizing and supporting the\u200b important \u200crole\u200d that these \u2063religious\u200b sisters play \u200din society, state governments are actively working to\u200c undermine their \u2064work and force\u200b them to conform to ideologies that go against their deeply held beliefs. This is a clear violation of religious freedom \u2062and a \u2064concerning precedent for the\u2063 future.<\/p>\n
Religious freedom\u200c is a fundamental human right that \u200dshould be\u200b protected and \u2064respected by all governments. It allows \u200dindividuals and organizations to freely practice their faith and fulfill \u200btheir mission without interference \u2064or discrimination. When governments target and persecute \u2064religious sisters, \u2062they are not \u200bonly violating their rights, but they are \u200calso\u2062 undermining\u2064 the moral fabric \u200bof society.<\/p>\n
We must stand up and defend the \u2063rights of religious sisters and\u200d other religious organizations who face persecution from their \u200down governments. We must advocate for laws and policies that uphold the \u2064principles of religious freedom and respect the beliefs and \u2062practices of all individuals\u200c and \u2064groups.<\/p>\n
The battle for freedom is not just\u2063 a fight for\u2063 religious sisters,\u2063 but for all of us who cherish the principles of liberty, justice,\u2062 and human dignity. It is a battle that requires\u200d unity, \u2062courage, \u200dand perseverance. We cannot afford\u200d to remain silent\u200c or passive in the face of government\u2063 persecution. We\u2064 must come together and demand that our governments protect and uphold the rights of religious \u200bsisters and all those who seek to \u2064live out their faith\u200b in freedom and peace.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
