In a Dec. \u200b6\u2063 op-ed titled<\/a> “The bag \u200cthat \u200bopened up my\u200d Blackness<\/a>,” McCammond devotes the first 600 words to lauding a \u200d$150 luxury bag that\u2062 has “unexpectedly opened up so many \u200cspaces\u2062 for \u200corganic Black joy and connection.”\u2062 The Telfar bag, explains \u200cMcCammond in what sounds like an endorsement for which\u2063 she is receiving royalties, comes “in three sizes and so many delightful colors. … I’ll find\u200c myself gently touching the faux leather every now \u200cand then just to reconfirm\u200b it’s as soft as it looks.”<\/p>\n

What, you might wonder, does a\u2062 luxury handbag have to \u2064do with celebrating \u2063black culture?\u200d Frankly, I don’t quite know, given \u2063McCammond giddily notes that singer\u200d Selena Gomez \u200dand Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., both own \u200bversions \u200bof the \u200bbag, \u2064which is \u200cthe creation of a\u200b black, queer \u2063designer\u2062 \u2014 \u2063presumably \u2062that’s why, a few paragraphs in, McCammond \u200boffers the caveat that\u200d it’s\u2062 “people of color” sharing the joy.<\/p>\n
I also presume for a white woman\u2064 to buy the bag would \u200cbe categorized as cultural appropriation,\u200c since\u2064 white people \u200bruin everything. And\u200b though I’m \u2064being \u200da bit snide, \u200bthat’s not far off\u200c from what \u200cMcCammond seems to think. That she represents the younger generation of professional corporate journalism gives reason to think there is little\u2064 hope for its future.<\/p>\n
An Example \u200bof Anti-Racism Infantilizes\u2063 Its \u200dAdherents<\/h2>\n
Telfar, declares \u200dMcCammond, “has brought me \u2064into a community in \u200bwhich the full breadth of Blackness is on display.” Yet \u2064she can’t help celebrating one\u200c community at \u200dthe expense of another \u2014 that of her \u200down\u200d biracial family. “I’m biracial but was raised primarily \u200cby \u200bmy mom, who is White and, honestly, \u2064not\u2064 a reliable ally,” McCammond explains. \u2064”Black beauty wasn’t embraced or explored \u2062in\u2064 our house when I\u2063 grew up.”<\/p>\n
What, we might ask, did her white mother \u2064do that exemplified this crypto-racism? “My mom \u200bis genuinely so \u2064out of touch that during one visit \u2062to the National Museum of African American\u200d History and Culture,\u200d she\u2062 stopped random Black people to apologize … for … slavery? Oppression? Her outfit? I’m \u200bstill not \u200dsure.”<\/p>\n
