According to The Guardian<\/a>, scientists\u200c have recently made progress in understanding the gene mutations that cause these white patches. In 2016, they developed a \u2062”mathematical model” \u2064to describe \u200bhow pigment cells move and grow in the womb of these animals.<\/p>\n
In 2016, \u2062Animal Crossings\u200b of Florida,\u2064 Inc., announced<\/a> the opening of an “Interactive Zoo” featuring\u200d the “World’s First\u2064 Piebald \u200d Alligator<\/a>.”<\/p>\n
In short, piebaldism \u200cis so \u2064rare in some species that \u200duntil recently scientists knew very little\u200b about it.<\/p>\n
Phillips had the incredible \u200bluck of spotting the piebald elk\u200b during\u200d a\u2063 “big game classification flight” conducted by \u200dCPW.<\/p>\n
Earlier this \u200dmonth, CPW’s \u200bMontrose office issued a news release<\/a> \u200cto inform the public\u200c about low-flying helicopters<\/a>.\u200b The\u2062 purpose of these\u2062 flights was to place GPS collars on \u2063elk calves and pregnant cow elk for research purposes.<\/p>\n
“CPW aims to understand calf survival\u200d and cause-specific mortality across different study areas in the state,” the press release stated<\/a>.<\/p>\n
In other words, Phillips and his colleagues had important work \u2063to do, and the sighting \u2064of\u200c the piebald \u2064cow elk was a fortunate coincidence.<\/p>\n
And what a remarkable coincidence it was. Colorado is home to the \u2062largest elk\u2062 population in \u2062the world, with over 280,000 animals. Based on averages, there\u2062 may only be\u2063 three piebald cow elk in the entire state.<\/p>\n
To the average \u2062reader, terms like \u200d”mathematical\u2064 model” and “cause-specific mortality”\u2064 may \u2062not evoke\u2062 a sense of wonder.
