(Don\u2019t get me started \u200con those schmaltzy, nauseating Nat \u2063King Cole classics.) December is a big, great month with a lot of joy. But also, some \u2064days are cold, overcast, and \u200dwet.\u200d Or, God forbid, snowy.<\/p>\n<p>Those days don\u2019t call for\u2062 Michael Buble and Mariah Carey. They need something more somber but sweet. Something a little\u2062 melancholic but also\u2062 a little musing. They\u200c need something you forgot about. They need\u2063 Danny Elfman.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll recall Elfman as the critically acclaimed, \u200bwidely beloved score composer; if you don\u2019t, that\u2019s \u200dwho he is. He has a catalog of straight-up bangers ranging from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Fttst9dG6Ko\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cThe Simpsons\u201d theme<\/a> \u200bto all the best songs \u2062in the charmingly grim Tim Burton movies of the 1990s.<\/p>\n<p>Underrated about Elfman is that three of Burton\u2019s movies\u200d are packed with his songs of a\u200b gothic hue exquisitely capturing those chilly and cozy but \u2064somewhat gloomy days of the Christmas season.\u2064 (The \u200bfollowing are also some of\u2064 my favorite Christmas-time films, largely because of Elfman\u2019s contribution.)<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Edward Scissorhands\u2019 (1990)<\/h2>\n<p>This entire soundtrack is essentially what I\u2019m talking about. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-15-most-anticipated-albums-of-2021\/\" title=\"The 15 Most Anticipated Albums of 2021\u00a0\">title track<\/a> (formally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xKGmoyuUvyU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cIntroduction (Titles)\u201d<\/a>) chimes with majestic bells in waltzing three-four time, flutes and strings dancing atop.\u200c It also includes one of my favorite Elfman\u2064 signatures:\u2062 a children\u2019s choir \u2062that \u2063provides only \u201cooo\u201ds and \u201cla la la\u201ds that are subtle but highly effective. The next \u2062track, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=At46AcZwA-A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cStorytime,\u201d<\/a> is largely the same but with a killer ending wrapped in bittersweet sorrow. Same for the titles \u201cCastle on the Hill\u201d and \u201cBeautiful New World\/Home Sweet Home.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Skip to the masterpiece <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VMfs1rlw4tc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cIce Dance,\u201d<\/a> \u200band you can practically feel the snowflakes swirling at\u2063 your neck as the horns \u2064build up to a climax \u200cwith\u200c a pounding timpani, fanning harp, and more children\u2019s choir.\u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=L91w7A-VNh8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cThe Grand Finale\u201d<\/a> is essentially all of the aforementioned songs in one, but even more monumental in its\u200c sonic regality accented with crash cymbals and\u200b heralding horns.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Batman Returns\u2019 \u200b(1992)<\/h2>\n<p>Save this one \u2064for December days of the truly macabre. No\u2062 song in \u200bthe soundtrack\u2062 is anything less than melancholic, foreboding, and even \u2062menacing. But they \u200bmanage to capture the same feel as the \u201cEdward\u2063 Scissorhands\u201d score, only with a more\u2062 thunderous brass and plodding strings that conjure\u2063 dark images of threatening\u200d shadows marching the listener to uncertain depths. (\u2018Tis the season!) <\/p>\n<p>For all of that, head to my favorite, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=m-mXhKueU1w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cThe Cemetery.\u201d<\/a> Yes, it\u2019s bleak but also irresistible. Other\u2064 greats from the soundtrack include \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=E_L04BPyxYo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Birth of a Penguin Pt.\u2063 1<\/a>,\u201d \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BwhlLOWlYdo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Children\u2019s Hour<\/a>,\u201d \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lT9IwqveFVg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Finale Pt. 1<\/a>,\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MqhbPhmVC04\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">End Credits.<\/a>\u201c<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018The Nightmare Before Christmas\u2019 (1993)<\/h2>\n<p>Best \u2062for \u200cparents with children exhibiting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/air-force-one-will-keep-blue-and-white-design-biden-decides\/\" title=\"Air Force One will keep blue and white design, Biden decides\">dark streak<\/a>. Obviously, you\u200c have to start with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QLvvkTbHjHI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cWhat\u2019s This?\u201d<\/a> \u2014 the upbeat, sleigh ride of an anthem \u200bcapturing the childlike ecstasy of Christmas\u200b morning (but with cheerful themes related to death, nightmares, and fear).\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=l6QZUcRJw-A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cTown Meeting Song\u201d<\/a> is another classic with ringing flutes and a muted trumpet to go along with lyrics explaining presents and ornaments to ghouls who only understand the morbid. <\/p>\n<p>Skip\u200b to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fsrHJGgLV-g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cMaking Christmas\u201d<\/a> for bouncing mayhem and a haunting \u200cbassline while demons, witches, and\u200b beasts sing their gruesome spin on the \u2063holiday. Finally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0ZFrQ15iGOo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cOverture\u201d<\/a> wraps \u200bthem all into one, a medley of the film\u2019s marquee tracks in purely instrumental, rapturous splendor.<\/p>\n<p>Have \u2064a merry \u2062Christmas!<\/p>\n<hr>\n<\/div>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> How does the track &#8220;Birth of a Penguin\/Main \u200bTitle\/Selina&#8217;s Theme&#8221; \u2064from\u2064 the Batman Returns soundtrack capture the mysterious and dark\u200c energy of Gotham City?<\/h2>\n<p><span>  The season to be spooky, after all.)\u200b The track \u200b\u200b<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=foyAOoVagWw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cBirth of a \u200cPenguin\/ \u200dMain Title\/\u200bSelina\u2019s Theme\u201d<\/a> marries a sense \u2063of\u2064 mystery \u2063with\u2063 bursts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/big-bang-revealed-telescope-launched-next-week-might-see-first-light-in-universe\/\" title=\"Big Bang Revealed: Telescope Launched Next Week Might See First Light In Universe\">dark energy<\/a>, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JZYQxFVfIdI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cThe Zoo\u201d<\/a> has \u200dan eerie quality that perfectly\u2063 captures the\u200b haunting atmosphere of Gotham City.\u2062 In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=z_PfnKFqtHY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cThe Finale\u201d<\/a>, Elfman combines epic orchestral elements with a touch of holiday cheer, creating a unique blend of darkness and festivity.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018The Nightmare Before Christmas\u2019 (1993)<\/h2>\n<p>This wouldn\u2019t be a list of Danny \u200dElfman\u2019s Christmas music\u2062 without mentioning the film that revolves entirely around the holiday. In the \u200bdelightfully strange\u2064 world of Halloween Town, Elfman\u2019s songs take center stage and\u200d bring the\u2063 story to life. From the \u2063hauntingly beautiful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pzANnVP9bgE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cThis \u200cis Halloween\u201d<\/a> to \u2062the tender <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YUEeRJ9G9Ss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cJack\u2019s Lament,\u201d<\/a> every \u2063song \u2063is a masterpiece in its own right. \u2064Elfman effortlessly blends\u2064 elements of Halloween and Christmas, \u2062creating\u2062 a soundtrack that perfectly captures the\u200d quirky and\u2064 magical spirit of the film.<\/p>\n<p>So, this Christmas season,\u2063 if \u200dyou find yourself longing for \u200da change from \u200bthe usual cheerful tunes, give Danny Elfman\u200b a chance.
