Phillips (pronounced Karen) went on a tantrum and deceptively shared an image \u2062of the boy,\u200c whose face\u2064 was painted equal parts red and black.<\/p>\n<p>Phillips\u2019 and his editors chose only to show the side of Armenta\u2019s \u2063face that was painted black and the blog <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/media-outlets-smear-young-kansas-city-chiefs-fan-racist-showing-part-story\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trashed him \u200das a racist<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt takes a lot \u200dto disrespect \u2063two \u200dgroups of people at once. But on Sunday afternoon\u200d in Las\u200d Vegas, a Kansas\u200b City Chiefs fan found\u200b a way to hate \u2062Black people and \u2062the Native Americans at the same time,\u201d Phillips wrote\u200d of the child.<\/p>\n<p>Added, Phillips, \u201cThis is what happens when you ban books, stand against Critical Race Theory, and try to erase \u200ccenturies\u2064 of hate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not only is \u2063 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/liberal-medias-kansas-city-chiefs-blackface-hoax-everything-need-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Armenta<\/a> a\u200d child, but \u200bit was\u2062 later\u200d revealed that he is\u2063 himself Native American.<\/p>\n<p>Those two\u200d facts, \u2064coupled with the reality that he was wearing war paint and not blackface, should have seen the outlet apologize and retract\u200c the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/miami-herald-botches-another-anti-desantis-hit-piece\/\" title=\"Miami Herald Botches Another Anti-DeSantis Hit Piece\">botched hit piece<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But for nearly two weeks, Deadspin dug in and \u200crefused to acknowledge that the story was \u2062both factually wrong and that attacking children is morally \u2064reprehensible.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, Holden\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/mom-young-chiefs-fan-crushes-racism-narrative-big-revelation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">family<\/a> threatened to sue Deadspin.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, \u2063the\u2063 law firm Clare Locke LLP sent a letter to Deadspin and its parent company G\/O Media that demanded\u2063 a retraction\u2063 \u2013 \u2064or else.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese Articles,\u200b posts on X, and photos about Holden and\u2064 his parents must\u200c be retracted immediately,\u201d\u2062 a letter\u2062 obtained\u2064 by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/race-in-america\/kansas-city-chiefs-fan-deadspin-defamation-lawsuit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NewsNation<\/a> read. \u200b\u201cIt is not\u2064 enough to \u200dquietly remove \u2063a tweet from X or disable the article from Deadspin\u2019s website. You must publish your retractions and issue an apology to my clients with the same prominence and \u2064fanfare \u200cwith which you defamed them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thursday, Deadspin suddenly had a change of\u200b heart and decided to update the story.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">It is being\u200d reported that the parents of the nine-year-old that \u200cwere RUTHLESSLY ACCUSED of wearing blackface \u200bare preparing to SUE Deadspin!!!!<\/p>\n<p>SUE\u2063 THEM\u200c FOR \u200cEVERYTHING!!!! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/CsTeS8OrLm\">pic.twitter.com\/CsTeS8OrLm<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Graham Allen\u2064 (@GrahamAllen_1) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GrahamAllen_1\/status\/1731712507033571422?\">December 4, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It\u2019s fascinating how\u2064 quickly people will bend when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/family-young-chiefs-fan-threatens-make-media-outlet-pay-racism-smear-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">threatened<\/a> \u200d with being sued into oblivion.<\/p>\n<p>The outlet <a href=\"https:\/\/deadspin.com\/roger-goodell-kansas-city-chiefs-fan-black-face-native-1851048905\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">issued an update<\/a> to\u200c the story and added an editor\u2019s note that removed any mention of\u200d Armenta being a child.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Deadspin \u200dclaimed it had\u2064 no idea Holden was wearing war paint when it branded him \u2064a racist \u2013\u200c despite the\u200d fact that images of \u200chis full face were publicly available when Phillips attacked him.<\/p>\n<p>The portion of the article that attacked the child now states, \u2063\u201cIt takes a\u200c lot to disrespect \u2064two \u2064groups of people at once.\u200c But on Sunday afternoon in Las Vegas, someone in the stands at the Kansas City \u2063Chiefs \u200dgame found \u2064a way, leading to lots of unanswered questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Deadpsin\u2019s editor\u2019s posted the following note to\u200b the article:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn \u2062Nov. 27, Deadspin\u200b published an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/vivek-ramaswamy-responds-to-backlash-over-his-answer-on-if-9-11-was-an-inside-job\/\" title=\"Vivek Ramaswamy addresses criticism on 9\/11 'Inside Job' stance.\">opinion piece criticizing<\/a> the NFL for allowing a \u200cyoung fan to attend\u2064 the Kansas City Chiefs game against the \u2064Las Vegas Raiders on Nov. 26 wearing a traditional\u200b Native\u2064 American headdress \u200cand, based upon the available photo, what\u2063 appeared to be \u2062black face paint\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately the\u200b article drew attention to \u2064the fan, though our intended focus was on the \u200bNFL and its checkered history on race, an issue which our writer has covered extensively for\u2063 Deadspin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/sports-journalist-admits-falling-smear-young-nfl-fan-apologizes-idiot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Deadspin\u2019s<\/a> \u200bresponse was just to\u200b pretend that Phillips did not \u2062intend to attack a \u200bsmall\u2064 child, but\u200d meant to target the NFL.<\/p>\n<p>The update added:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe regret any suggestion that we were attacking the fan.\u200c To\u2062 that end, our story was updated on Dec.\u200c 7 to remove any photos, tweets, links, \u200bor otherwise identifying information about the\u2063 fan. We\u200d apologize for any \u2063harm caused\u200d to the child and his family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While it\u2019s good that Deadspin finally\u2063 made the update and acknowledged their mistake, it\u2019s hard to ignore the fact that it\u200c took legal\u200b threats for them to \u2062do so. Phillips in their attempt to frame the child as a racist. They claimed that the child\u2019s actions\u2062 were disrespectful to both Black people and Native\u200d Americans, yet failed to acknowledge that \u200dthe child himself is Native American. This blatant disregard for facts undermines the credibility of both the\u2063 author and the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the \u200dinsistence on equating the child&#8217;s war paint with blackface is both unfounded and\u2063 offensive.
