So what\u2019s with the coordinated media campaign this week claiming \u200da second Trump term will\u200b usher in \u200bthe \u2063end of the \u2062republic and the rise of a fascist dictatorship?<\/p>\n
Well, three weeks ago, \u2063President Joe Biden\u2019s reelection campaign scolded the press for not attacking Donald Trump hard enough, specifically\u2062 calling out\u200b The New York Times, saying\u2063 \u201cit\u2019s time to meet the moment \u200band\u2063 responsibly \u200binform the \u200belectorate of\u200d what their \u2064lives might look like \u2062if the leading GOP candidate for president is allowed back in the WH.\u201d<\/p>\n

As\u2063 my colleague David Harsanyi noted\u200b at the time, the Biden camp wasn\u2019t working \u2064the refs,\u200b it was demanding obedience. \u201cAnd \u2062the fact that the White House can brazenly petition a supposedly free press<\/a> to join his campaign effort tells us a lot about how little\u2064 the \u2062contemporary Democrat cares for a free press.\u201d<\/p>\n
This is like when the Biden White House complains that Americans think the economy is \u200dbad because the media don\u2019<\/a>t do enough to explain how great the economy is, and a few days later, we\u2019re inundated\u2063 with stories about how the economy is doing great, \u2062even if it doesn\u2019t feel<\/em> like it.<\/p>\n
In any case, \u200bmessage\u200d received! Three weeks after Biden\u2019s campaign made their demands of the press, nearly every major corporate media outlet<\/a> in\u2063 America rolled\u2063 out\u200b some version of the campaign\u2019s talking point about\u2064 how dangerous a second Trump term will be.<\/p>\n
The New\u200c York Times, always \u200deager\u2062 to deliver for a Democrat in power, didn\u2019t\u2063 disappoint. \u200dOn Monday, the paper ran a triple-bylined piece arguing that a second Trump \u2062term would be \u201cmore\u2064 radical\u201d than the\u200b first. \u2064Why? Because Trump would\u200c \u201cuse the Justice Department to\u200d wreak\u2063 vengeance against his adversaries,\u201d and \u201cget prosecutors to go after his enemies.\u201d \u2062In other \u200cwords, he might do what\u200d President Biden is doing right now in plain sight. (As I said earlier this week, Democrats are afraid Trump will do to them what \u200bthey\u2019re\u200b doing to him.)<\/p>\n

The Washington Post ran its own versions of the same\u2064 argument. Robert Kagan \u2063penned a column about how\u2062 to stop the \u201cTrump dictatorship.\u201d The always-absurd Jennifer Rubin used her column at the Post\u200d to heap\u200c praise\u200b on Liz Cheney, who went on the Sunday shows\u200c to\u2063 warn that if Trump\u2064 is\u2063 elected, \u2064it will be the last election we ever have, and that we\u2019re \u201csleepwalking into dictatorship in the\u200d United States.\u201d<\/p>\n
It\u2019s fair to\u200c call this kind of rhetoric \u201cassassination prep,\u201d because of course if\u2062 this will really<\/em> be the \u2062last \u200delection, if we\u2019re really<\/em> facing a fascist dictatorship in Trump\u2019s second term, well then drastic measures\u200c are necessary, are they not? That\u2019s the tacit argument \u200dbeing advanced in these pieces. And\u2064 it\u2019s not some fringe thing on the left. The entire January\/February\u2064 issue of The Atlantic is nothing but hysterical essays warning\u200b that the next Trump presidency \u200d\u201cwill be worse.\u201d<\/p>\n
