(An avid philatelist, FDR\u2019s stamp collection was once valued at auction to be worth a respectable $80,000.)<\/p>\n<p>Within hours of the attack, however, \u2063Roosevelt had begun making plans to respond to the tragedy \u2062and to call for a declaration of war\u2062 \u2014 against both Japan\u2063 and Nazi Germany. A speech that significant would normally have been drafted over a \u200bperiod \u200cof 3-10 days,\u200b but once the preparations began, FDR had already announced that he planned to speak \u200dto \u2062Congress the following day.<\/p>\n<p>Since two of the president\u2019s usual speechwriters \u200c\u2014 Samuel I. Rosenman and Robert Sherwood \u2014 were unavailable,\u2062 Roosevelt wrote most of his\u2063 December 8th\u2064 speech alone. Undersecretary of State\u2062 Sumner Welles submitted a slightly longer speech that touched on events leading up to the December 7th attack, but Roosevelt threw it out and kept his own words.<\/p>\n<p>Biographer Nathan Miller described the scene \u2063as\u200c Roosevelt dictated the \u2063speech \u2014 \u2063now one of the\u2064 most famous speeches in American history \u2014\u2062 to \u2064his secretary, Grace Tully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe inhaled deeply on his cigarette, \u200cblew out the smoke, and began dictating in the same calm tone he used to deal with his mail,\u201d Miller\u2062 wrote. \u201cHe enunciated the\u200d words incisively and slowly, carefully specifying each\u2064 punctuation mark and new paragraph. Running little more than five hundred words, the message\u200d was dictated without hesitation or second thoughts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Roosevelt did make a \u2064few\u2064 edits after dictating his \u2064first draft \u2014 including\u200c one change that would go down in history. The iconic first line, calling December 7th \u200b\u201ca date which will live in infamy,\u201d originally read as \u2064follows: \u200d\u201cYesterday, December seventh, \u20621941, a date which will\u2062 live in world \u2062history, the United States was simultaneously\u200b and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-date-that-will-live-in-infamy-remembering-pearl-harbor-80-years-later\/\" title=\"\u2018The Date That Will Live In Infamy\u2019: Remembering Pearl Harbor 80 Years Later\">deliberately attacked<\/a> by naval and \u2063<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/which-american-presidents-served-in-the-military\/\" title=\"Which American Presidents Served In The Military?\">air forces<\/a> of the Empire of Japan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>FDR stood before the House of Representatives at 12:30 p.m. the next day \u2014 approximately 24 hours after he had learned of the \u200cattack \u2063\u2014 and delivered his message.<\/p>\n<h3>WATCH:<\/h3>\n<p>Roosevelt\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/resource\/afc1986022.afc1986022_ms2201\/?st=text\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">speech<\/a> began with his response to \u200dthe attack:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Mr. Vice President, and Mr. Speaker, and \u2064Members\u2063 of the Senate and\u200c House of \u2062Representatives:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>YESTERDAY, December 7, 1941, a date which will live in infamy the United States\u2062 of America was suddenly \u2064and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of \u200cthe Empire of Japan.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The United States was at peace with that Nation\u200d and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still\u2064 in conversation with its Government and its Emperor \u200dlooking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific. Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in the American Island of Oahu, the\u200b Japanese Ambassador to the United States and his colleague \u2064delivered to our \u200dSecretary of\u2064 State a formal reply to \u2064a recent American message. And while this\u200b reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or of armed attack.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It will be \u200drecorded that the \u200bdistance of Hawaii from Japan makes \u2062it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time \u200bthe Japanese \u2064Government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The attack yesterday on \u2062the Hawaiian Islands has caused \u2063severe\u2063 damage to American naval and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/us-threatens-to-exit-niger-as-russias-wagner-group-revels-in-military-coup-attempt-2\/\" title=\"US may withdraw from Niger as Russia's Wagner Group celebrates failed coup.\">military \u2064forces<\/a>. I regret \u2062to tell you that very many\u2064 American lives have been\u200d lost. \u200dIn addition American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high\u2064 seas between \u2063San Francisco and Honolulu.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>What followed was \u200ca pivot from his assessment of the attack \u2063to a request for Congress to move forward \u200dwith an\u200b official declaration of war.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Yesterday the\u2062 Japanese Government also launched an attack against Malaya. Last night Japanese\u2062 forces attacked Hong\u2064 Kong: \u2064Last night \u200bJapanese forces attacked Guam. Last night Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands. Last night the Japanese attacked \u200cWake Island. \u200bAnd this morning the Japanese attacked Midway Island.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Japan has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending\u2062 throughout the Pacific area. The facts of yesterday and today speak for\u200d themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand\u2063 the implications to the very life and safety of our Nation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>As Commander in Chief of the \u200cArmy and Navy\u200c I have directed that all\u2064 measures be taken for our defense.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>But always will our whole Nation remember the character of the onslaught against us.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>No matter how \u2063long it may take us to overcome this\u200c premeditated invasion, the American people \u2062in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I believe that I interpret the will \u2063of the Congress and of the people when I assert\u2062 that we will not \u200bonly defend ourselves to the uttermost but will make it very certain that this\u200d form \u2062of treachery shall never again endanger us.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Hostilities exist. There\u200d is no blinking at\u2063 the fact that our\u2064 people, \u2063our territory, and our interests\u2064 are in grave\u200d danger.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>With confidence in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/seven-days-in-january-all-living-former-secretaries-of-defense-warn-trump-over-election-fight\/\" title=\"Seven Days in January? All Living Former Secretaries of Defense Warn Trump Over Election Fight\">armed forces<\/a> \u200cwith the unbounding determination of our people\u2063 we will gain the inevitable triumph so help us \u2062God.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I ask that the Congress declare\u2062 that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, December 7, \u200c1941, a state of war has existed between the United \u2063States and the Japanese Empire.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Congress\u200b obliged, passing an official <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitthecapitol.gov\/artifact\/sj-res-116-declaration-war-japan-december-8-1941#:~:text=On%20December%208%2C%201941%2C%20Congress,388%E2%80%931%20in%20the%20House.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">declaration of war<\/a> against Japan \u2014 S.J. Resolution 116 \u2014 that very day. The measure passed in the Senate, 82-0, and in \u200dthe House, 388-1. Three \u200bdays later, allied with Japan, Nazi Germany also declared war on the United States. Congress responded with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.senate.gov\/about\/images\/documents\/sjres119-wwii-germany.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">S.J. Resolution 119<\/a> just hours later on December 11th.\u200b That vote passed the Senate, 88-0, and in the House,\u200d 393-0.  <\/p>\n<h2> What\u200b were the implications of the attack on Pearl Harbor \u2064for the life and safety of the nation?<\/h2>\n<p><span>  Ications \u200dto the very life\u2063 and safety\u200d of\u200d our nation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>With confidence in\u2063 our armed forces, \u2064with the unbounding determination of our people,\u200c we will gain the inevitable triumph \u2014 so help us God.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I \u200cask that the Congress \u2063declare\u200b that since the unprovoked and dastardly\u2062 attack \u200cby\u00a0Japan on Sunday,\u2064 December 7th, \u20631941, a state of war has existed between the United\u200d States and the Empire\u2064 of Japan.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u200d\u200dIn response to Roosevelt&#8217;s request,\u200d Congress declared \u2064war\u200b on \u2063Japan\u200d within an hour of his speech. Three days later, Germany\u200d and Italy\u200d declared war on the United States, and the United States reciprocated \u2062by declaring war on\u200d them.<\/p>\n<p>The attack on Pearl \u2062Harbor was\u2064 a defining moment in American history. It\u2063 propelled \u2063the United\u200d\u200b States\u200d into World War II, shaping the \u200ccourse of the \u200dwar and \u200cultimately leading to victory for the Allied powers. Pearl Harbor also served\u200c as a turning point \u2062in American society, uniting the nation and sparking\u2064 a wave of patriotism and determination\u200c to\u2063 defend democracy.<\/p>\n<p>As \u200dwe mark\u2064 the 80th anniversary of the attack, it is important to remember the sacrifice and valor of those who fought and died at Pearl Harbor. Over 2,400 Americans\u2063 lost their\u2063 lives that\u200b day, and many more were injured.\u200c Their bravery and dedication\u2062 to their \u2064country will never be \u2064forgotten.<\/p>\n<p>Today, we honor the\u200b memory\u2062 of\u2064 those who were impacted by the attack on Pearl Harbor. We pay tribute to the men and women\u200d who served in World\u2063 War II, and we express \u200dour gratitude\u2064 for\u200d their unwavering commitment to protect our freedom and democracy.<\/p>\n<p>It is crucial that we continue to educate\u2063 future generations about the events \u200bof Pearl Harbor and the\u2064 lessons we have learned from \u2064it. We must strive to\u200b preserve the memory of this\u2062 historic day and ensure \u200cthat the sacrifices made by those who \u200ccame before us are never in vain.<\/p>\n<p>As we reflect on the date that will\u200d live in infamy, let us renew our commitment to\u200d peace, understanding, and unity. May we always strive to build a future\u2063 where conflicts are resolved through dialogue and diplomacy, and where the horrors of war are never repeated.<\/p>\n<p>Remembering Pearl Harbor is not just a way to honor\u200d the past; it \u200bis a reminder of the responsibility we have to create a better world for future generations.
