That\u2019s \u200dreally the only word I can use to describe the piece \u2063by \u2064artist Jesse Darling that recently won the Turner Prize, a \u2063prestigious award handed out to a British visual artist.<\/p>\n
Darling, 41, is making headlines because her work disses Margaret Thatcher, \u201cBritishness\u201d and other\u2063 forces of\u2063 \u201csocietal \u200cbreakdown,\u201d according to\u2062 the U.K. Independent<\/a>. Also, she\u2019s the first\u200b transgender winner of the award; according to Britain\u2019s iNews<\/a>,\u200d she\u2019s \u201ctransmasculine,\u201d which is a fancy \u200bway of saying she\u2019s a woman who identifies as \u200ba man<\/a>.<\/p>\n
Anyhow, according to the Independent, the \u2064Oxford-born Darling was presented the award by \u2063rapper Tinie Tempa on Wednesday and promptly pulled a Palestinian flag out of her \u200cpocket. Nice work. In addition \u200cto\u2062 being\u200d given the opportunity to virtue-signal, she was also awarded \u00a325,000 ($31,437.62) in\u200b prize money.<\/p>\n
During her speech, Darling also slammed former Prime Minister Thatcher<\/a> for cutting back on\u200b art in schools since it wasn\u2019t \u201ceconomically \u2063viable.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cShe paved the way for the greatest trick \u2064the Tories ever played, which is to convince working people in \u200bBritain that studying, self-expression and what the broadsheet \u2062supplements describe as \u2018culture\u2019 is only for certain\u2062 people in \u2064Britain\u2064 from certain socioeconomic backgrounds,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just want\u2064 to \u200dsay don\u2019t\u2064 buy in, it\u2019s for\u200d everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n
Well, yes, in Darling\u2019s case, it is \u2014 although it doesn\u2019t prove her point in quite the way \u200cI think she hoped \u2063it would. Here\u2019s the piece in question, \u201cTowner \u200bEastbourne,\u201d for which she won \u200dthe award:<\/p>\n
