If Americans wonder why <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/house-democrats-pass-controversial-bill-codifying-roe-v-wade\/\" title=\"House Democrats Pass Controversial Bill Codifying Roe v. Wade\">health care remains<\/a>\u200d a major issue\u200c in every recent presidential election, they need to look no further than our current level of baseline health. U.S. life expectancy \u200bhas essentially stagnated as 6 in 10 American adults suffer from at least one chronic disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), four in\u200d 10 suffer from two. Additionally, nearly 42 percent of American adults are categorically obese and can expect \u2062their lifetime health expenditures to be double that of non-obese Americans.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p>\n        <span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<div lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>US life expectancy \u2062in 2022 is\u200d at levels not seen since 2001 largely because of drug overdoses\u2064 and \u200bchronic illness.\u200d Suicides also just hit an all-time high with a per capita rate not seen \u2063since 1941<\/p>\n<p>America is very \u2063sick <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Eze9c3vv0Y\">pic.twitter.com\/Eze9c3vv0Y<\/a><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>            \u200c  \u2062         \u2014 Saagar Enjeti (@esaagar) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/esaagar\/status\/1729874147189325938?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 29, 2023<\/a>\n          <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>        <\/span>\n      <\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Dr. Peter Attia highlighted the flaws in our current health care system in his book, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Outlive-Longevity-Peter-Attia-MD\/dp\/0593236599\/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=outlive+book&#038;qid=1701963160&#038;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Outlive: The Science &#038; Art of Longevity<\/a><\/em>, published in March.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Health insurance companies won&#8217;t pay a doctor much to advise a patient to change their eating habits or monitor their blood glucose levels to prevent type 2 diabetes. However, insurance will cover the same \u200cpatient&#8217;s expensive insulin <em>after<\/em> they have been diagnosed. Similarly, there&#8217;s no billing code for putting a\u200b patient on a comprehensive exercise program \u200bdesigned to maintain their muscle mass, balance, \u200cand resistance to injury. But if \u2064they fall and break their hip, then their surgery and physical therapy will be covered.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The U.S. spends \u2063around $3.6 trillion on health \u200ccare annually, but \u200donly 3 percent or less \u200dof \u2062that spending is focused on prevention. Meanwhile, U.S. health care spending has risen to over 18 percent of GDP in 2021, up from\u2063 5 percent in 1960.<\/p>\n<p>If the emphasis \u2064on American health care shifted \u2064to healthspan rather than just lifespan, Americans could not only\u2062 live longer but\u2064 also live better for longer. Currently, the system\u200b focuses on treating diseases after they have already taken hold, rather than addressing the root causes of\u200b these illnesses.<\/p>\n<p>The importance of exercise in preventing chronic diseases cannot be overstated. Regular\u2064 physical activity\u2064 has been proven to reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke,\u200c type 2\u200b diabetes, and\u200c various other health \u2062conditions. It is also crucial for maintaining\u200b a healthy weight \u2062and promoting\u200c mental \u2062well-being.<\/p>\n<p>However, despite these proven \u2064benefits, Americans are not getting enough\u2063 exercise. According to \u2064the CDC, only 23% of adults in the United States meet the \u200brecommended guidelines for physical activity. This lack of exercise contributes to the \u2063high rates of chronic\u200c diseases and the soaring healthcare costs associated with \u200ctreating\u200c them.<\/p>\n<p>By\u2063 prioritizing preventative medicine and\u200b incorporating exercise into insurance coverage, we can shift the focus\u2063 from treating diseases to \u200bpreventing \u200bthem in the\u2062 first place. This will not only improve\u200d the overall \u200dhealth \u200cof the population but also reduce\u2063 healthcare costs \u2063in the long run.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to insurance \u2063coverage, there \u2063is\u2062 a need for broader systemic changes\u200d to promote physical activity and healthy\u2062 lifestyles. This includes creating safe and accessible spaces for\u2062 exercise, implementing policies that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ftc-files-slimmed-down-complaint-in-fight-with-meta-over-within-acquisition\/\" title=\"FTC files slimmed-down complaint in fight with Meta over Within acquisition\">encourage physical activity<\/a>\u200d in schools and workplaces,\u2063 and providing education\u200c on the importance of regular exercise.<\/p>\n<p>It is encouraging to see a presidential candidate like Vivek\u2062 Ramaswamy addressing the importance of exercise in\u200b fixing the \u200bAmerican healthcare \u200bsystem.\u200b His call for diverse insurance options that cover preventative medicine and lifestyle interventions\u200d is a step\u200b in the right direction.
