Britain\u2019s Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Foreign Secretary\u2062 David Cameron, and King Charles III \u2062apparently cared about\u200b the climate so much that each jetted to\u200d Dubai separately<\/a>. The only silver lining for conference organizers aiming to keep the conference carbon \u2062neutral is that some attendees couldn\u2019t make it to Dubai yet because their private jets had been covered in snow and frozen<\/a> on the runway at \u2064Munich airport.<\/p>\n

Among all the climate zealots\u2019\u2063 hypocrisies, \u200bwhat bothers me most is their call<\/a> to drastically cut back meat consumption while they themselves enjoy\u2063 prime ribs and smash burgers from the conference\u2019s \u201c 1.5\u00b0 C-aligned menu<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n
I know\u2063 a thing or two about being forced to eat less \u2062meat. Growing up in \u2062communist China, the government imposed a strict food-rationing \u200dsystem that \u2062limited individual food consumption every month. We received ration \u200dcoupons \u200bfor rice, flour, and\u2063 meat. With meat coupons, each person could only purchase two\u200d pounds of \u200dpork monthly. \u2064But\u2062 widespread food shortages meant that the \u200cmeat counters at \u2063grocery stores were often empty. Due to a lack of good sources \u200dof protein\u200d and nutrition, the \u200daverage Chinese life expectancy at birth in \u200d1960 was only \u2064 44<\/a> years.<\/p>\n
The Chinese government abolished the food rationing \u200csystem in 1995 as limited\u2063 market reform lifted the standard of living. Since then, the \u2063Chinese people have\u2062 enjoyed more nutritious diets, including eating more meat.\u2064 As of 2021, Chinese people\u2062 reportedly<\/a> consumed about 90 million metric tons of meat,\u2064 twice\u2062 the U.S. total. Not surprisingly, the average Chinese life span in 2017 was 76 years<\/a>, a\u200d 72 percent\u2064 increase\u200d from 1960. A similar phenomenon has\u2062 happened in \u2062Africa too. \u2064According to The Economist<\/a>, Africans live longer as they eat more meat.<\/p>\n
But\u2062 climate zealots have shown they are \u2064more than willing \u2063to sacrifice the well-being of ordinary people at the altar of climate change. They are no\u2063 longer satisfied with declaring war on fossil \u2062fuels by shutting down coal plants, forcing people to switch \u2062from gas-powered cars<\/a> to electric vehicles, and paying more for \u200celectricity generated from\u200b unreliable green \u200benergy sources such as solar and \u200cwind. The climate zealots \u2063now want to\u200d regulate \u200dpeople\u2019s dinner plates by\u2064 declaring war on meat.<\/p>\n

Still, some politicians and activists seized on these studies as \u2064scientific proof that people must eat less meat to save\u200c the climate.<\/p>\n
\u2018Fart Tax\u2019<\/h2>\n
The new war on meat is conducted \u2063on two fronts: production and consumption. Some governments have tried to restrict meat production \u2063through regulations and punitive taxation, aiming to drive farmers out of \u2062the meat production business by increasing their cost of\u2064 operation. What\u2019s happening in New Zealand and the Netherlands is telling. In 2009, New Zealand\u2019s government \u2063imposed the so-called\u2062 \u201c Farmers Fight Back Against Emissions Taxes<\/h2>\n
In 2022, New Zealand attempted to implement a controversial “fart tax,” which\u2062 would have required farmers to pay a levy on livestock’s methane gas emissions. However, strong opposition from farmers\u2062 led to the abandonment of the taxation. But in 2019, then-Prime Minister Jacinda \u2062Ardern, known for her strict\u200c Covid-19 policies, reintroduced the measure, this time targeting methane emissions\u200c from cows and nitrous oxide emissions from livestock urine. \u200bArdern resigned\u2064 earlier this\u200c year to avoid a potential election \u200ddefeat.<\/p>\n
Last year, the Netherlands\u200b government implemented even more draconian policies aimed at reducing the agricultural industry’s nitrogen emissions.\u200d The Wall Street\u2064 Journal \u2062estimates that thousands of livestock farms \u2062would \u2062have to close and farmers would be forced to reduce their herds to meet the emissions\u2063 targets. This would result in a massive slaughter of livestock. Non-compliant farmers could face legal consequences. Nevertheless, climate crusaders like German Federal Health Minister \u200dKarl Lauterbach are determined to cut meat consumption by\u2062 80% globally. \u2064Lauterbach proposes taxing meat to\u200d make \u200cit less affordable\u200d and subsidizing \u2062alternative \u200cmeat products. However, a study from the University of California, Davis, reveals\u200d that lab-grown meat is up to 25 times worse for the climate than beef.<\/p>\n
Despite Germans paying\u2062 nearly 50% more for\u2062 electricity\u2064 and consuming less \u2064meat, the nation has failed to meet its\u2062 emission reduction goals.
