Since, in large part, the state had created⁣ the crisis, it made some sense⁤ that the state⁤ should help those struggling to stay afloat. Voters love free money. The market reacted to this reality ⁤— the ⁣coming regulations, ⁣not the coming climate — and energy prices began to rise.

Then responsible⁣ economists began ⁣warning that throwing trillions more into a hot economy would exacerbate existing inflationary pressure. Democrats renamed their⁣ corporate welfare, price-fixing,⁢ tax-hike “Build Back Better” bill the “Inflation Reduction Act” and went back to work. And‌ who is to blame?

The answer is simple: the government and its misguided policies. The actions ‌taken by governments, both in response to the pandemic and in pursuit⁤ of their own political agendas, have⁣ contributed to the current⁣ state of high prices and inflation.

First, the government’s decision to shut down economic activity in the wake of the pandemic disrupted ⁢global supply chains and led to‌ shortages of⁣ consumer goods. Instead of adopting targeted measures ⁣to⁣ protect public health ‍while keeping the economy‌ running, governments ‍resorted to heavy-handed restrictions that crippled businesses and disrupted production.

Second, the indiscriminate⁣ mailing of debt-backed checks to individuals further exacerbated the problem. Rather than providing‍ financial ⁤assistance ⁢to the industries and workers most affected ‍by the crisis, the government opted for a one-size-fits-all approach that distributed money to‍ both those ‌who had lost their jobs and those who hadn’t. This excessive spending only‍ fueled inflationary pressures.

Third, the government’s push for Keynesian stimulus policies and unnecessary spending⁣ worsened⁣ the ‍situation. By injecting trillions of dollars into an already overheated economy, Democrats and some Republicans ignored the warnings of responsible economists and disregarded the potential consequences of such excessive spending.

Lastly, President Joe Biden’s‍ executive actions targeting the domestic production ⁢of energy⁢ have⁤ contributed to rising energy prices. The market responded to these regulations, which prioritize⁤ environmental concerns over economic stability, and energy costs have‍ skyrocketed ⁣as a result.

In summary, the paradox of high‍ prices is not due to individuals willingly buying expensive things. It is a consequence of government actions that disrupted supply chains, distributed funds haphazardly, implemented misguided stimulus policies, and hindered domestic ‍energy production. The blame for inflation lies squarely with the government and its failure to implement effective and targeted measures to protect both the economy and the well-being of its citizens.

As consumers, we may be frustrated⁢ by high prices,‍ but it is crucial to ⁣recognize the root causes of inflation. Holding the ⁤government accountable for their actions and ‌advocating for ⁢sound economic policies ⁣should be our focus as we navigate these‌ challenging ⁤times.

Annie Lowrey ponders in her Atlantic article titled “Inflation Is Your Fault,” why people continue to purchase expensive items despite being upset about high prices.
