At a campaign fundraiser in Massachusetts on Tuesday, the 81-year-old Biden admitted that former President Donald Trump\u2019s presence in the 2024 presidential race dictated his own decision to seek re-election.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf Trump wasn\u2019t running, I\u2019m not sure I\u2019d be running,\u201d Biden told donors, according to Bloomberg<\/a>. \u201cBut we cannot let him win for the sake of our country.\u201d<\/p>\n

To anyone who has followed public affairs these last three years, Biden\u2019s diabolical<\/a> obsession with Trump<\/a> comes as no surprise.<\/p>\n

The hint of retirement under different circumstances, however, did raise eyebrows.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0 New York Post,<\/a> for instance, called the president\u2019s comment\u00a0\u201ca stunning self-assessment of the implications of Biden\u2019s age.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Tuesday evening, Biden backtracked somewhat from his earlier admission.<\/p>\n

In an 18-second clip posted to the social media platform X, the confused-looking president addressed a reporter\u2019s question while shielding his eyes from the glare of lights.<\/p>\n

\u201cWould you be running for president if Trump wasn\u2019t running?\u201d the reporter asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI expect so. But look, he is running, and I just, I have to run,\u201d Biden<\/a> replied.<\/p>\n

When asked if he would drop out of the race should Trump do likewise, the president said, \u201cNo. Not now.\u201d<\/p>\n

To put it mildly, Biden does not appear at his mental or physical best. The octogenarian president often says incoherent<\/a> things and stumbles<\/a> for no obvious reason.<\/p>\n
And people have noticed. On the campaign trail, Trump has drawn laughs for hilarious imitations<\/a> of Biden trying to find his way off stage.<\/p>\n
In short, the president\u2019s age constitutes a problem because he appears unfit. Meanwhile, his administration has proven catastrophic. And voters have connected the two.<\/p>\n
Last month, for instance, Biden celebrated his 81st birthday by posing for a picture with his birthday cake. On social media, users noticed<\/a> that the cake\u2019s many candles created the effect of a towering inferno, which some likened to a dumpster fire \u2014 a metaphor for the Biden presidency.<\/p>\n
We should not forget, however, the central element in Biden\u2019s surprising admission: his obsession with Trump. This is especially noteworthy because his donors share that obsession.<\/p>\n
In the modern Democratic Party, those Trump-hating donors include Wall Street tycoons. And they care nothing for Biden. They want only to defeat the former president.<\/p>\n
\u201cBiden\u2019s done a lot of good things. But I think his legacy will not be a good one if he is the nominee,\u201d billionaire investor Bill Ackman told Bloomberg.<\/p>\n
At last week\u2019s New York Times DealBook Summit<\/a>, JPMorgan Chase & Co. Chief Executive Officer Jamie Dimon expressed a more overt sense of urgency by encouraging Summit-goers to support Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley<\/a>.<\/p>\n
\u201cEven if you\u2019re a very liberal Democrat, I urge you, help Nikki Haley, too,\u201d Dimon said, according to Bloomberg.<\/p>\n
In short, powerful people want Trump stopped at any cost.<\/p>\n
Recent polls, however, have revealed bad news for those Trump-obsessed moguls. For instance, the former president leads<\/a> Biden in battleground states and has made substantial gains<\/a> among voters who traditionally support Democrats.<\/p>\n
Thus, given the donors\u2019 mood, we should not be surprised if the president\u2019s candid admission turns prophetic.<\/p>\n
