the ability to attract a romantic or sexual\u2064 partner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Oxford \u2063notes\u2062 that \u201crizz\u201d originating from the middle of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trump-looks-like-rock-star-throws-maga-hats-crowd-cheering-supporters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">charisma<\/a>\u201d is a relatively \u201cunusual word formation pattern,\u201d though \u2063it does list \u201cfridge\u201d (refrigerator) and \u201cflu\u201d (influenza) as other\u200d examples of words with similar etymological\u200d origins.<\/p>\n<p>The term \u201crizz\u201d beat out some other\u2063 words that did feel particularly relevant\u2062 to 2023.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrompt\u201d was one of the\u2062 runner-ups, and those are \u201cprompts\u201d in relation to giving\u2063 artificial\u200c intelligence commands.<\/p>\n<p>In perhaps a\u2064 more\u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democrats-target-cable-providers-for-carrying-fox-newsmax-oann\/\" title=\"Democrats Target Cable Providers for Carrying Fox, Newsmax, OANN\">ominous sign<\/a> for 2023, the term \u201csituationship\u201d (a complicated or \u200dnon-traditional\u2064 relationship) was also a\u200c runner-up term.<\/p>\n<p>And, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/two-house-republicans-say-theyre-open-to-assault-weapons-ban\/\" title=\"Two House Republicans Say They\u2019re Open to Assault Weapons Ban\">mild surprise<\/a>, \u201crizz\u201d also beat out \u201cSwiftie\u201d \u2014 the term\u200c that self-professed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/exorcist-warns-attending-taylor-swift-concerts-says-artist-attracting-demons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Taylor\u200d Swift<\/a> super \u2064fans use to describe\u2064 themselves.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/languages.oup.com\/word-of-the-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">annual award<\/a> is given to \u201ca word or expression that\u2063 has attracted a great deal of interest over the last 12 months,\u201d according to\u200b Oxford, so the award \u200band its runner-ups (in theory) provide a snapshot \u200cinto the year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/languages.oup.com\/word-of-the-year\/2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Last\u200b year<\/a>, the winner was \u201cgoblin mode,\u201d a slang\u2064 term which means \u201ca type of behaviour which is unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or \u2063greedy, typically in a way that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/oops-oxford-dictionary-chooses-goblin-mode-as-word-of-the-year\/\" title=\"Oops: Oxford Dictionary Chooses \u2018Goblin Mode\u2019 As Word Of The Year\">rejects social norms<\/a> or expectations,\u201d so perhaps not the \u2064best snap shot for any year.<\/p>\n<p>Runner-up\u2063 terms in 2022 included \u201cmetaverse\u201d and \u201c#IStandWith\u201d (including the hashtag.)<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/languages.oup.com\/word-of-the-year\/2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a>, perhaps\u200c unsurprisingly, the Oxford Word of the Year was \u201cvax\u201d and all\u2063 of its permutations (\u201cvaxxed,\u201d \u201cvax \u200bsites\u201d \u200dand \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/report-ny-fire-dept-staffers-stole-vax-cards-keep-jobs-without-jabbed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vax cards<\/a>,\u201d etc.)<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, and\u2062 justifiably, the award\u2062 looked a little different in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing lockdowns \u2062drastically altered the world.
