An \u200demail sent by her high school\u2019s principal to her family on Oct. 20, 2023, notified them that Francesca was one of more than \u206230 students whose images had been digitally altered to appear \u2063as synthetic sexually explicit media \u2014 sometimes referred to as \u201cdeepfake\u201d pornography.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Speaking \u200bto media<\/a>, Francesca shared how she felt betrayed, saying, “We need to\u2062 do something about \u200bthis because it\u2019s not OK, and\u2064 people are making it seem like it is.<\/strong>” She\u2019s right \u2014 something must be \u2064done.<\/p>\n
The issue of image-based sexual abuse<\/a> (IBSA) \u2014 whether it manifests as nonconsensual AI\u2063 or “deepfake” content, nonconsensual recording or sharing of explicit imagery, extortion or blackmail based\u200d on images, recorded sexual abuse, or its \u200bmany other manifestations \u2014 can feel like something that happens to\u2064 “others.” It\u2019s\u200d a headline we scroll past. It can feel distant\u200d from our own lives. But that\u2019s far from\u2062 the truth.<\/p>\n

If anyone has ever taken a \u2063video\u2064 or photo of you and \u2062posted it online, even an innocent family photo or professional headshot, that\u2019s all it takes.<\/li>\n
You and your loved ones are personally<\/strong> at risk for\u200d having\u2064 your images turned into sexually explicit “synthetic,” “nudified,” or “deepfake” content.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nIt doesn\u2019t take a tech genius on the \u2064dark web to do this, as the code and tools to make this are free on open-source,\u2063 popular websites like Microsoft\u2019s GitHub and are shared widely online<\/a>. In fact, GitHub \u2062hosts the \u2064source code to the software used to create 95 percent of sexual deepfakes despite \u2063being notified<\/a> of the\u2062 exploitative code by anti-exploitation advocates.<\/p>\n
These kinds of images can be created in less time than it\u2064 takes to brew a cup of coffee.<\/p>\n
Even \u2064if people don\u2019t know how to create these images, they can openly solicit and pay for others to do so on websites like Reddit, where entire communities exist based on trading and \u200ccreating nonconsensual explicit material.<\/p>\n
And here\u2019s the kicker, \u200bthese images aren\u2019t some sloppy photoshop \u200cof a face onto a body, a la 1990. Top executives at one of the most innovative technology companies in the world have told us that they themselves typically cannot\u2062 tell if an image is synthetic,\u2064 artificial pornography \u2064or not. There isn\u2019t some easy watermark that separates fake\u200d versus real.<\/p>\n
And of course, sexual imagery is often consensually created and shared\u2064 between romantic partners and then shared nonconsensually later, sometimes called \u2063revenge pornography. A 2017 survey<\/a> found \u2063that one in eight participants had been targets of this distribution, or threat of distribution, without their consent. Not to mention the \u200ccountless numbers of adult sex trafficking or abuse survivors who have their\u200d exploitation\u200c recorded. These problems are also \u2064rampant within the pornography industry as we\u2019ve seen on Pornhub<\/a>, XHamster<\/a>, and other pornography \u200csites.<\/p>\n
Victims can face an uphill battle, and many \u200ctry to face\u200d this alone. Most victims of IBSA (73 percent) didn\u2019t turn to anyone<\/a> \u2062for\u200c help. At most, you can \u200bcontact the social media company<\/a> \u200band ask them to take it\u200d down, with mixed results, or \u200dmaybe your state law could \u2064hold the person who uploaded the image liable. But this doesn\u2019t <\/p>\n
How can\u2063 nonconsensual AI\u200b or “deepfake” content \u200bbe addressed \u2063and regulated to combat \u200dimage-based sexual abuse?<\/h2>\n

In an interview with the media, she \u200cexpressed her sense of betrayal and emphasized the need to take \u200daction.\u200c “We \u200cneed \u2063to do something about\u200c this because it’s not OK, and people are making\u2064 it seem like\u200c it is,”\u200d she said. Do not underestimate the power of a\u2064 single\u200b photo or video posted \u200bonline<\/a>. Even \u200cinnocent \u2062family photos or professional headshots can\u2063 be exploited and turned into\u200b sexually explicit “synthetic,” “nudified,” or “deepfake” \u2063content. This can be done without\u200c requiring advanced technical skills, \u2063as the necessary code and tools are freely accessible\u2064 on open-source platforms like\u200c Microsoft’s GitHub. Shockingly, despite being notified by \u200banti-exploitation\u200b advocates, GitHub\u2064 continues to host the source\u2063 code for the software used to create 95% of sexual deepfakes.<\/p>\n
It \u2062is alarming to realize that these images can be generated\u2063 in a matter of minutes, often less time than it takes to brew a cup of coffee. Furthermore, even\u200c if someone lacks the\u2064 ability to\u2064 create\u200d such content themselves, they can easily \u2062find and pay others to do it for \u200cthem\u200c on platforms \u200blike\u2062 Reddit. Entire communities exist\u2064 solely \u2062for the purpose of trading and\u200b creating nonconsensual \u200bexplicit material.<\/p>\n
Therefore, it is \u200dvital \u200cthat \u200bwe confront \u200dthis issue\u200b head-on. Measures need \u2062to be implemented to combat image-based sexual abuse, \u2062including strict \u200dregulations against the creation, distribution, and consumption of deepfake pornography. Technology\u2064 companies should \u2063also take responsibility by actively monitoring and removing such content from their platforms. Additionally, educational programs should\u200d be developed and promoted to raise awareness among\u2063 young people and their families about the risks and consequences of \u2063image-based sexual abuse.<\/p>\n
