I never thought \u200dI would say this, but the slobbiest\u2062 senator \u200bin\u2062 the \u2062Democratic Party may also be the one with \u2064the most common sense \u2014 at least\u200d on some issues.<\/h2>\n
During an appearance Friday on \u201cThe View,\u201d Sen.\u2064 John\u200b Fetterman of Pennsylvania, of the \u201c inappropriate \u200ddress code<\/a>\u201d fame, was asked about\u200d the House\u2019s\u200d recent expulsion of\u200c Republican Rep.\u200c George Santos<\/a> of New York over alleged campaign finance violations<\/a>.<\/p>\n
While Fetterman \u200c <\/a>could have used it as a chance to score political points<\/a>, he \u200dinstead turned the focus to corruption within Democratic ranks.<\/p>\n
Specifically, Fetterman called out Democrat\u2064 Sen.Robert Menendez<\/a> of New Jersey, who was indicted for allegedly accepting hundreds of\u2064 thousands of dollars in bribes, \u200bincluding cash, gold\u2062 bars and \u2064a luxury convertible, in exchange for using his official position to benefit businessmen and the government of Egypt, \u200caccording to NorthJersey.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n
In October, Menendez was\u200d charged with conspiring to act\u200b as an agent\u200d of the Egyptian government, \u2062violating the \u200bForeign Agents Registration\u200c Act. The\u200c indictment claims \u200cMenendez\u2063 took actions\u200c on behalf of Egypt, including \u200bits military and intelligence\u200d officials. Menendez, who \u2064denies the\u200c allegations, is also facing prior bribery charges \u2062involving cash, gold bars and a luxury car, according to the \u2062Associated Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, it\u2019s\u200c like \u2014 \u200dI\u2019m not surprised [about Santos],\u201d Fetterman said. \u200c\u201cBut to me, I think that the more important\u200d picture is \u2064that we have a \u200dcolleague in the Senate that actually did much more sinister and serious kind of \u200bthings \u2014 Sen. Menendez,\u201d he \u2064added.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe needs to go,\u201d \u200dFetterman said, \u201cand if you are going to expel\u200d Santos, how can you allow somebody like Menendez to remain in the Senate?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd, you know, \u2064 Santos<\/a> \u2026 his kind of lies are almost funny\u2026\u2062 he landed\u200c on the moon, and that kind of stuff,\u201d Fetterman \u2062said, referring to the fact that, according to media reports, the\u2063 now-ousted \u200bCongressman had fabricated nearly every detail of his background, including \u2062his education, work history and even family heritage, according\u2063 to the New York Intelligencer<\/a>.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhereas, you know, I think, you \u200cknow, Menendez,\u200d I think is really a senator for Egypt, not New Jersey,\u201d Fetterman told the hosts of \u201cThe View.\u201d \u201cSo I really think he needs \u2063to \u2064go, and especially it\u2019s kind of strange that if Santos \u2062is not allowed to remain in the House, \u200byou know, \u200csomeone like that \u2063\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
Perhaps taken aback by the direct attack on \u200da fellow Democrat,\u2063 \u201cThe View\u201d cohost Sunny Hostin attempted to suggest that Menendez should not be ousted until he is convicted\u2062 \u2014 although she did not suggest the same treatment for Santos, who similarly has never been convicted for his alleged crimes.<\/p>\n
While\u2062 some in the Democrat party have \u200bcalled for Menendez to resign,\u00a0according to NBC News<\/a>, there has not been any move to oust him from the \u2064party, despite his alleged egregious crimes.<\/p>\n
\u201cAre you, though, uncomfortable with the fact there\u2019s not been adjudication?\u201d Hostin<\/a> \u200d asked, conveniently \u200cforgetting that Santos, too, had not been convicted of anything.\u200b \u201cThat\u200b while \u200dhe has been charged, there\u2064 hasn\u2019t been a conviction?\u201d<\/p>\n
But\u2062 Fetterman wasn\u2019t backing down.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am, I am, and it\u2019s like, he has the right for his day in \u200ccourt and all that,\u2062 but he doesn\u2019t have the right to have those kind of votes and things that \u2014 that\u2019s not a right. \u200cAnd I think we need to make that kind of decision to send him out,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Fetterman is \u2064right about one thing: While one may debate whether ousting a sitting lawmaker sets a bad precedent, if there is one lawmaker who really should be\u200c ousted, it\u2019s\u2064 a senator who is accused of working for another country.\u200c The allegations against Santos are much \u200dmore minor in comparison.<\/p>\n
Fetterman\u2019s willingness to call out corruption\u200c in his own party is a\u2064 breath of fresh air and a stark change from \u200cthe \u2064clannish behavior Democrats generally display.<\/p>\n
