White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre promptly ended a news briefing Thursday after refusing to take reporter Simon Ateba\u2019s question.<\/p>\n

Ateba is a Cameroonian journalist and the publisher of Today News Africa<\/a>.<\/p>\n

National Security Counsel spokesman John Kirby had been speaking at the news conference, giving updates on the cease-fire in Israel<\/a> and the Biden administration\u2019s continued aid to Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Kirby also spoke about Angola President Jo\u00e3o Louren\u00e7o\u2019s visit to the White House<\/a> on Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n

But when it was time for questions, and after several other reporters had already been called upon, Ateba was quickly shut down after trying to speak.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan I ask you a follow-up on Angola?\u201d Ateba said to Kirby.<\/p>\n
As an off-camera female voice began speaking over him, the African reporter pushed back.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is so surprising that you don\u2019t take \u2014 you are receiving an African leader, and you can\u2019t take a question from an African journalist?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Jean-Pierre then dismissed Kirby<\/a> and retook the lectern.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe can end this briefing if it\u2019s not going to be respectful here,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The press secretary called on another reporter, but Ateba asked his question again.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s when Jean-Pierre<\/a> abruptly ended the meeting.<\/p>\n

Ateba later shared his frustration about the press secretary\u2019s conduct in a post on social media.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a shame that @WhiteHouse @PressSec Karine Jean-Pierre decided to abruptly end the press briefing rather than take a question from me after a year,\u201d he wrote. \u201cEven when President Biden is hosting an African leader like the President of Angola today, the White House<\/a> does not take a question from the African journalist in the room.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am highly disappointed and even heartbroken that in the citadel of democracy, and in the most powerful house in the world, I\u2019m being discriminated against for a year for trying to do my job while journalist colleagues remain silent.<\/p>\n
\u201cMay God help me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, the White House sent a letter to Ateba threatening to revoke his press pass because he \u201cimpeded a June 26, 2023, press briefing and interrupted the Press Secretary.\u201d<\/p>\n
The letter, which Ateba posted on social media, also cited other \u201cincidents.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf this continues we\u2019re going to end the press briefing. \u2026 You\u2019re being incredibly rude. \u2026 You\u2019re talking over your colleague. You\u2019re talking over your colleague,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
