According\u2063 to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/meta-instagram-video-algorithm-children-adult-sexual-content-72874155\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The \u200bWall Street Journal<\/a>, test accounts that \u200cfollowed\u2064 &#8220;young gymnasts, cheerleaders, and other teen and \u200dpreteen influencers&#8221; were exposed to &#8220;jarring doses of salacious content,&#8221; including videos of children and overtly sexual adult\u2063 videos.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2062Journal also highlighted the concerning fact that\u2064 many young people on\u200c Instagram are followed by adult men, and some of these \u2062men&#8217;s accounts also\u2064 follow accounts that offer\u2062 explicit sexual \u2062content. \u200bFollowing \u2064these men led Instagram&#8217;s algorithm \u200dto present even more disturbing content, alongside advertisements from companies that claim not to\u2064 support such content.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian Centre \u200dfor Child Protection conducted similar tests and\u200d obtained similar\u200c results, confirming the\u200c issue.<\/p>\n<p>The Journal provided\u200c two specific and \u2063disturbing examples of\u200b its findings.\u2064 In one instance, an ad for the\u2063 dating app Bumble appeared between a video of someone interacting with \u2063a \u2062life-size latex doll and a video of a young girl lifting her shirt to expose her midriff. In \u200danother instance, a\u200c Pizza Hut commercial followed a video of a man lying on a bed with his arm around\u2062 a 10-year-old \u2063girl.<\/p>\n<p>Meta, the parent company of Instagram, disputed the Journal&#8217;s tests, claiming they were not representative of actual user experiences. However, the Journal had set up accounts to mimic the actions of real users. Meta also stated that Instagram takes action\u2063 against suspected content violations, removing or inhibiting the distribution of millions of videos each month.
