As my Ethics and Public Policy \u2063Center colleague Devorah Goldman recently \u200b observed<\/a>, \u201cJews are treated on\u2063 the \u2063left as patriarchal oppressors, virtually indistinguishable from whites\/Christians\/Westerners.\u201d And so large swaths of the left now traffic in\u2062 Jew-hatred because the left\u2019s fundamental impulse is\u2064 civilizational patricide \u2014 rage against their own culture and a longing to destroy it. <\/p>\n

This hatred for the West and those identified with it \u2064explains why \u2062leftists are not \u200dbothered by the\u200b inconsistencies of their support for radical Islamists. It might seem odd that there are so many self-proclaimed feminists and queers cheering for Hamas, especially because one need not like Israel,\u200b or even Jews\u200c in general, to recognize that Hamas \u200bis \u200ba genocidal death cult<\/a> that should be destroyed. But the left\u2019s ideological imperatives push them to side against whomever\u2063 they perceive as more white, Western,\u200b and Christian, which in this case\u200c are the Jews and Israel.<\/p>\n

This is why many on the\u200d left have been indifferent (at \u200cbest) \u2063or gleeful (at worst) \u2062regarding the atrocities committed by\u200c Hamas. For the left, only oppressed identities<\/a> are deserving of sympathy. And in this view, Jews no longer count as oppressed but are instead viewed as oppressors \u2014 and therefore legitimate targets. Settler-colonists, as leftist argot labels them, have no \u2062moral\u2064 standing to\u200c complain about\u2062 how the colonized respond to them.<\/p>\n

This is morally deranged and historically illiterate, which is to be expected when academia\u2019s intellectual offal is\u200b processed\u2062 through TikTok. Nonetheless, the left\u2019s Jew-hatred has a certain perverse rationality to it. After all, \u200dJews are intertwined\u2063 with the history \u2063of the West and are natural enemies\u2062 of hateful \u2062fanatics who want to \u200cdestroy Western \u200dCivilization. \u2062It is not just that Christianity was \u200cself-consciously derived from the Hebrew \u200dfaith (though that\u200c alone would be enough), or that Jews have punched far above their demographic weight in contributions to\u200c culture, science, and art. \u2063It is that Jewishness is a rebuke\u200d to leftism\u2062 itself.<\/p>\n

Contrary to the old imprecations, Jews aren\u2019t rootless, for they are rooted so long as they remain Jewish. And this rootedness, this\u200d ancient identity that has endured through persecution and exile for thousands of years, is precisely what \u2062the left hates most about\u2062 them. Jewishness will still be here when woke leftism is a comic footnote in intellectual history. \u200d <\/p>\n

Though there are plenty of politically liberal Jews, including\u200d in Israel, and though there have been many Jews who became leftist radicals, Jewish \u2063identity remains a threat to\u200c leftism. Jewishness provides a living tradition and identity that is deeper than the\u200d latest intellectual trends or emotional whims. Jewishness,\u200c even when \u200battenuated and irregularly observed, is still a redoubt against leftism\u2019s determination to have no other gods\u2063 before \u2063it. <\/p>\n

At \u2062heart, leftism is a perversion of religion. Faced with \u200cthe evil and\u2064 brokenness of the world, leftism responds not \u200bby turning toward God, \u2064nor by first seeking to tame the \u200devil of one\u2019s own heart, but by seeking power. Call it critical theory, anticolonialism, or just old-fashioned Marxism \u2014\u200c the \u2064promise of leftism is that power, properly redistributed\u200c from the oppressors and to \u200dthe oppressed, can be used to remake the world. And so they constantly seek to\u200c seize \u2063power, flattering themselves that they will use \u200dit wisely, for the\u2064 good of the people.<\/p>\n

Of course, this seizure of power is necessarily tied to the destruction\u2062 of the old (unjust) \u2063order. The past is seen as little more than a catalog of injustice and the status\u200d quo as \u200cthe perpetration of injustice. Hence the constant calls to smash the system, \u2063burn it all down, stage a revolution, and so on. If people\u200c get hurt, well, they\u200d probably had it coming, and if not, well, \u2063you\u200c can\u2019t make \u200can omelet without breaking some eggs. <\/p>\n

Of course, now the question is not merely, \u201cWhere\u2019s\u2063 the\u200d omelet?\u201d\u200d but whether anyone even believes there will be an omelet. Today\u2019s left still wants to destroy, but without any apparent faith in a glorious future, they \u200btake\u2063 power to hollow out institutions and secure patronage, not to build anything just or worthy or\u2064 beautiful. Those chanting \u201cfrom the river to the sea\u201d know that the fulfillment of\u2064 their slogan \u200bwould\u2063 not be a prosperous, multiethnic\u200b secular\u200d democracy, but genocide and an Islamist hellhole.<\/p>\n

Yet they carry on \u2014 hopeless, but full \u2064of resentment and a\u2062 desire\u2063 to hurt others. Hatred gives them meaning, so they have eagerly embraced Jew-hatred \u200cas the latest iteration of their rage against all of Western Civilization. <\/p>\n
